AP Cheaters Identified

The Customs and Excise department is imposing a Profit and General Expenses charge on the 34 models of 6 makes of vehicles which the government believes have been underdeclared in the past.

The makes are:

  1. Kia. Distributed by Naza Kia Sdn Bhd whose AP King is Nasimuddin.
  2. Chevrolet. Distributed by Auto Pacific Star. AP Kings involved are Syed Azman Syed Ibrahim and Mohd Haniff Abd Aziz.
  3. Hyundai. Distributed by Hyumal Sime-Darby.
  4. Chery. Distributed by Alado Bumi Automobile.
  5. Fiat. Distributed by Torino Motors Industries.
  6. Mahindra. Distributed by DRB-Hicom.

The PGE charges would be around 30 percent for vehicles below 1.6 liters and 38 percent for vehicles above 1.6 liters.

Association of Malay Importers and Traders of Motor Vehicles president Datuk Abdul Hamid Ibrahim says this move would make the makes concerned have virtually zero chance to survive in the market.

The charge came into effect yesterday.

Hmm. Looks like they really are getting moving on working something comprehensive out. I guess that’s a good thing to have come out of this dirty laundry after all.

Hope the increased price on foreign marques doesn’t make people feel they are more prestigious… that would have a pretty negative impact on the national cars.

  12. AP Policy Unchanged; Tun Dr. M disappointed » said,

    February 21, 2006 @ 4:51 am

[...] Back in July 2005, the Customs and Excise department identified 6 companies underdeclaring vehicle prices in order to avoid tax. They have since been slapped with a 30-38% Profit and General Expenses tax on 34 of their models. (Refer to this post) For an offense that could be interpreted as cheating the government of income, perhaps Tun Dr. M expected more drastic punishment like having their APs revoked. [...]

  13. Honda Malaysia to focus on CKD units said,

    September 19, 2006 @ 4:01 pm

[...] Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd wants to focus on selling CKD cars instead of CBU cars due to the government’s moves to re-examine the CBU import values. They fear the government might impose a Profit and General Expense (PGE) charge for CBUs, which was imposed previously on a few mainly Korean marques. That move had pushed sale prices 30-38% higher, making Korean cars totally uncompetitive. [...]
