I was surfing Jaring’s website to find out more information about it’s wired broadband service when I came across this clause in it’s MY015 Reach package.
8. Free usage of up to 2000MB of data for upload and download (Until 30th September 2005 only). Excess usage charge is RM15 for every 1000MB.
Since JARING has started implementing this, is this a sign that are we going to see data transfer caps in all our broadband packages including those from TMNet?
This is a very big turn-off indeed. 2GB of data for a 1mbps line runs out really fast even if you’re not a download freak.

I dont really understand the terms, but is that 2Gb of data transfer per month?
Every resources has its limits, bandwith included. Bandwith cap could be one of the solution to our (sometimes) crawling internet speed. Some people use their internet 24×7 for bittorent and file sharing. Most of the files are illegally shared and the bandwith used could be utilised by some other netters. Some countries do have bandwith cap, at least Australia does (can somebody verify this?).
While I am not saying bandwith cap is THE answer to our internet woes, but hogging the entire bandwith with bittorents and file sharing (which mostly are filled with porns and illegally obtained softwares) surely not a good thing either.

If Jaring does implement usage quotas, I hope they (and their resellers) educate new users about it (as billing by xfer amount isn't common in Malaysia, aside from GPRS). And of course, provide the necessary tools to easily check the usage. I hope there won't be too many who will face nasty surprise bills :)
NO, NO, NO. I am sick and tired of Australian internet ISPs putting caps on my broadband surfing experience, and I am certainly not going to tolerate any download caps when I come back to Malaysia.
This is something that I adamantly refuse to accept.
If the business is still good even with the limited bandwidth, then Most probably TMnet will follow. But if not many people subscribes to that package, then I don't think we have to worry about TMnet implementing caps on our broadband.

isn't it just for the "Internet telephony" services which is bandwidth capped?
Which means, you get 2GB worth of VOIP for free! Not internet access…
And they charge the telephony service by bandwidth and not by country rate?
guys of course there is a cap in broadband service , otherwise no matter how large is the bandwidth there will be never enough. I setup a Tmnet bb before, for the first week they forgot to set the cap properly and it shoot up 190Kb /sec of download. but there only last for a week. So , Tmnet also has a cap for broadbank, otherwise there will be no business strategy anymore :) . not like hong kong folks that enjoy 25Mb broadband at home.
i think paul is mentioning a DL/UL amount cap, not DL/UL speed cap. Speed cap is always there but the amount cap is to reduce the 24/7 abuse. However i think RM 15 for 1 GB of data is way too expensive.
It's not just "way too expensive", raibow7j, it's BLOODY expensive.
I'm a hardcore download freak, and even though I don't pirate much (well, most of the time anyway ^_^), I do download big things like Linux ISOs. A bandwidth amount cap would be quite detrimental to my downloading habits.
Bandwidth caps are implemented by all ISPs in Australia. They charge exorbitant prices for Internet access, but there are still many limitations. How naive was I to believe that Australia (or maybe, just Melbourne) had far better Internet and technology, err, powers, before coming here.
So believe me, not having any cap is a better deal for all of us.
That's funny to hear. Having a bandwith limit for a broadband connection is quite redundant, and quite possibly a major turn-off. This could be a bad move for Jaring, and I think this move will inevitably cause them to go to TMNet as their breadband service provider. I'm sure TMNet does not implement this, right?

All I can say is fork these companies, when register dont have these terms, crazy mofos, if 2GB perday I can accept, permonth – fork la them. Now I check I am already doing 90MB upload, 300MB download, ands its still 2:10PM, confirm capped.
Think of it in business perspective, its good for the isp to improve their quality of service. However, instead of charging excessive megabyte, it would be more appropriate to reduce the down speed by half or more.

Broadband cable companies are even starting to cap in the US. It's just like what the airlines did with those new baggage fees. They realized that people have become dependent on their services. In other words, "we need them/they don't need us". Now these a$$holes can do whatever the hell they want to do as long as all the other major companies follow their lead. When there's no choice, people will have to accept it or do without. Most people can't or are not willing to do without. These companies know this. It all goes back to what I said about the attitude that THE CUSTOMER NEEDS US/ WE DON'T NEED THE CUSTOMER. It's bullying the customer at it's finest.
Anyhow, the hardcore capping in the states has already begun with Time Warner and many people are angry. Sadly, as we know here in AU, there's nothing they can do about it. Once one company does it and gets away with it, it's only a matter of time before the rest of the companies follow. It's all capitalist bullsh#t. The only way to turn this type of sh#t around would be to start up a rebel army, because we all know that government isn't going to come to the rescue.
Furthermore, more and more companies these days have changed their motto from "the customer is always right" to "I'm sorry, but that's against our policy". Capitalism is paving the road to hell.
BTW, Time Warners new advertisements in the US talks about their new CAP like it's a good thing. "Only pay for what you use" is what the commercials say. The whole world is going to hell and internet service is only going to get worse. Glad we could be one of the "progressive" countries leading the charge. How sad. :(
