When the oil price goes up even those hybrid models does’nt help much, for the poor and the middle class especially. Because hybrid models are priced higher than most standard luxury cars like the Camry or Accord. The Prius is much more expensive than Camry (in US, at least).

Remember that high fuel price tag is a way larger burden for the middle class users than the well-to-do users (whose mostly drives the Camry/Accord, of course) which can affords great amounts of fuel consumption without much headache.

Personally I think the hybrid models is built mainly for the environmental purpose(less emission), not really for less consumption.

As for summary I can tell you that 'hybrid cars' for right now(and for years to come in the future) are targeted for rich environmentalist (Hollywood celebreties as example) and not for the mass market.

If Sime is indeed buying 32% shares, that'll mean controlling power to run the company. Hopefully they're not politically force to buy those shares and have no control of the company.

If true, we might have better Proton in 3-5 years.

You are right. Think this is a positive move. Since SIME is entirely a profit making corporation it will concentrate in making PROTON more profitable.

The question is, when will P1 or P2 or Pn will produce hybrid car for Malaysia. I am sick of paying petrol through the nose!

About time these all 'small' players merge into a credible entity, and start looking into ASEAN market at least.

In the other words, Sime Darby can eliminates any incompetent Proton vendors( which most of them are lazy bumiputera protected by the gov). This thing of eliminating bumiputera vendors or contractors and replace them with better ones(or probably foreign ones too for cutting cost like China) has happened with other some GLCs after privatization.

The Sime Darby as a business entity sure would always trying to make the best decision for the money invested. Who knows there probably Proton would improve after the real corporate raiders taking over from politicians?

No matter what, still by textbooks theory(Basic Economy) we must make prediction that private entity always more efficient than government in producing right quality(and right amount of quantity too) product. Being pessimist is maybe being 'too' pessimist in this matter logically by those 'economical' economic theories that written in the textbook.
