Volkswagen implements RFID tracking

Volkswagen has implemented Identec’s i-Q8 active arphid tag in their post-production/pre-delivery line for their Autostadt (Auto-City).

An arphid is a term for RFID tags. RFID is pronounced “arphid”. Identec’s i-Q8 active arphid tag contains unique identification numbers and pre-delivery tasks. Each vehicle in the pre-delivery line is equipped with an arphid. After each task is completed, the status is written to the active tag.

Volkswagen can have up to 10,000 cars in a holding parking lot in one time. Imagine tracking the location without an arphid. Deploying this system has enabled Volkswagen to reduce delivery time and increased productivity by 4 times. Ultimately this improves the customer’s experience with the company and improves brand loyalty.

But seriously they need a highly advanced system to keep track of all their unsold cars sitting in a gigantic parking lot collecting dust.

Paul has blogged about this before… too lazy to link to the page…
