New Proton Savvy colour on the roads

There’s new colour option for the Proton Savvy on the road. Looking back at my blog comments, one of my readers had already seen it as far back as early September. I saw one for the first time this morning at Taman Connaught. The colour is something like a metallic apple green, something like the Perodua Myvi’s. I have a photo of it at home, will post it once I get home. At the office now. There were five colours if I remember. We know four now. I can’t remember the other one until I get home. *frust*

    Readers,

Yes, the Apple Green colour Savvy was in fact added to the range some 2 months ago.

Auto analysts I spoke to feel PROTON was being very "strange" about their colour schemes for the Savvy. At launch, only three colours were available, and none were light. Light colours can add a dimension of size to smaller cars.

There was also an absence of light solid colours, usually added to the economy range of a carmaker to make it cheaper (evidenced by the 1.3 Gen2 range).

Still, it's a good thing to have another colour. Most of the Savvy's on the road are either red or black. I'd venture to think the Savvy will look handsome in white, just as the Gen2 does.

On another note, I think the Savvy should do well in Europe if it gets there. I've tested the car and pushed it to 150km/h on a test track, and it was the most stable of small cars I've ever driven in Malaysia.

It's got a nice solid feel to it, and the build quality is aeons ahead of any PROTON available now, including the Perdana and even the Gen2.

The only gripe, or future possible gripe is the Renault engine, F1 success notwithstanding.

The experience with French engines (Tiara's Citroen AX) and the Waja 1.8 left a sour taste in many a Malaysian's mouths.

But for value-for-money, the Savvy is a real treat.

I await the auto version, which a little bird told me was supposed to be launched in September/October but final testing revealed some "issues" to the manual – automatic set-up.

    You have time don't you?

There is another color.. metallic, midnight metallic or something like that. This color was introduced barely a week or two ago so you may not see it on the road yet.

I agree that Savvy should have more color choices, white among them. I imagine Savvy in white will look gorgeous.

Then race it with a black Savvy.. muahaha… ying and yang…

The third colour is a nice medium silver with the lacklustre name "Metal Grey". It's dark enough to look sophisticated, but light enough the little car gets the appearance of brightness that can make it stand out in traffic.

the problem with savvy is the minute i look at it… no mood to test it la. the design exterior and interior sux!! interior material lagi teruk !! if u look at picanto, getz or even aveo, that's the kind of cars that people might wana test it la.. even how powerful or stable is that car, design like juara or awana will scare people off la… so don ask people to test 1st la b4 comment!! ask proton to sack it's designer and design a proper car la!!! Gen-2 is worth testing it, but after testing, disappointed la.

    E-nabill,

It's a Toyota, it's bound to be reliable. You're quite right, many people are going for the Myvi because of this. Then again, I suppose some years back, the people were going, it's a Mitsubishi, it's bound to be reliable. Oh wait, maybe not. Hopefully, we will be saying it's a VW, it's bound to be reliable. Err… right.

Myvi too flimsy and girly eh? I wanted to get one, but then needed something with a sportier drive so I was looking at the Kelisa instead. In the end didn't get either. Oh well. I love the new Swift though. $$$

Looks like we're seeing a lot of Savvy on the road lately. Maybe Proton's new marketing strategy is to hire people to drive these cars around town so people will go, "Well, it's not THAT bad I suppose". ;)

    Con(De)structive Criticism:

    "Built tougher than you think"

Well, apparently we don't think too highly of it in the first place, or even at all.

Please, shoot your marketing personnel. All of them. Proton's answer to BMW, indeed. Who came up with that? It was for the Gen2 or something right?

    Hi All,

The AMT for the Savvy will be out by the end of the year; price will not be above RM45k, at least that was the order to Tengku Mahaleel Ariff from Tun Mahathir Mohamad.

    But he's gone now.

MyBoy, hope that answers your query.

Just met Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar of PERODUA today. He says no new model for PERODUA in 2006, except…

    The revised Kancil.

Some people say a car is ugly and others say it's not. I just don't understand why people keep bashing savvy based on it's look. Dude it's so subjective. I would say myvi isn't that impressive also.. butt ugly i would say expescially its back- look like a van (indeed it is – mini mpv class).

My taste – Savvy which has conti feel is defintely much better than myvi. sales volumes doens't conclude anything. like some one say here my vi's sales is hot just because of toyota brand name

Toyota and all japs makes = automotive equivalent of electrical appliances, bland, cheap feels…and even their hi end saloons like accord and camry are damn boring

Ok that coming from a guy who is a fan of continental cars hehe..it may no pratcical but not one single product sastify all demands!

I owuld love to see savvy critics reactions. from first already komdem asvvy as failure…savvy has its own section of fans.

although I don't have the mind that Savvy is greater then Myvi, anyway, i still feel that it an okay car that with the same range with Kelisa.

Anyway, i still hope that Proton may survive as it truly represent Malaysian. Even I mention it to my Taiwan friend and he said "Oh, the Satria GTI with Lotus technology, it a great car"

So, continue to support Proton and give them some time, may be their really can chunck out quality car with parts source from other country. Local parts manufacturer really hopeless and no need to protect them anymore.

But, I still want to give neutral feedback about my Gen2 car. It had good design, good engine, good performance, and sporty, but…. a worst quality with even 5 months used can hear sound from everwhere… cheh….

Now back to Savvy, Just for those nerds who like to compare Myvi ( mini MPV) with Savvy, why not compare Myvi with a mini MPV from Toyota or even Daihatsu? Its all the same sh!t. You pay for what you get.

Does any of you know that our local car sold outside our country ( Perodua or Proton has different and better Interior ) Proton Impian ( WAJA ) best seller in UK.

Ku Li's comment in an interview….

Jadi, macam mana kita nak buat?

Mercedes… bukan Mercedes kecik-kecik, Mercedes besar-besar… kalau kita buang 300% import duty…

itu sebab harga kita tinggi… kerana kita jaga Proton… Proton tak berdaya maju… (YEA BETULLL!!!) Sekarang ni, kita pasang kereta Proton kita, banyak sekali… Kalau kita pergi ke Rawang, kita pergi ke Kuantan, kita pergi ke… bukit apa ni… Bukit Raja…er.. Bukit Raja… k? apa nama?

  • Good quality export car is built on the expenses of Malaysian tax money ! I still remember when Proton launch a "Proton Saga" in UK, their marketing tagline is : " Japanese Technology, Malaysian Value" plus 5 years mechanical warranty. Yet, Malaysian is given 2~3 years warranty as of today.

What I know of: Proton have exported their Proton Arena, Satria GTi to Australia and Taiwan.

Arena – "The Proton Wira half cut" was the brain child of Tengku Mahallel, the van is too big for the pasar malam hawker, the arena is just nice. :)

If proton don't get malaysian tax money then cannot compete lah. In australia forexample, a toyota 1.8 can cost A$20-22k. Who wanna buy gen2 costing A$20?

Also our cost of living is very very high. In australia, for example, a fresh grad get A$2000/mth. He can affor a car for cash. But not in malaysia. But the trouble is we malaysians accept this as a way of life. Why? I don't know. Things like hand phone also very very high price compared to canada (my friend told me). But, again, we malaysians accept this and buy anyway.

If we malaysians stop buying and see what happens …. but we won't do that. We will be happy taking a 9 year car loan. Strange but true.

    Hi all,

Yes, it seems this has turned out to be a Savvy-bashing platform.

Like I said in the entry yesterday, I like the Savvy, but I doubt the engine. Maybe brand new it's good; I hope the buyers on line can update us periodically.

Small advice? DO NOT MISS A SERVICE, OR EVEN BE LATE FOR IT.

You cannot compare the Renault Clio with the Savvy; the only similarity is the engine. That too, only in terms of capacity. The output is different.

But most of you are right. You cannot compare the Myvi to the Savvy. They're in different categories both in terms of engine size as well as body size.

Both have their appeal; to me the family man witg two kids, the Myvi is my choice. But if I were 15 years younger, it would be the Savvy, engine notwithstanding.

Someone blogged the quality and cheap feel of the Savvy; you cannot expect plush interiors at that price. It's unheard of.

A lot also depends on where the carmaker wants to position the car.

Look at the old Kia Rio stationwagon. Our company uses a lot of these cars. I say the exterior aesthetics are beautiful; my mom-in-law actually thought it was a Beemer.

Rio's interior though is cheap and bland, very plasticky and dull. But it's positioned that way. It's also cheap. The 1.3 went for about RM60k.

Positioning the car any other way (i.e. plush interior including great exterior) will push the price up, and it would not sell.

So, if you like the Myvi, fine. You admire the Savvy, go for it.

    Me?

I've sworn off PROTONs until they start winning awards in Europe, or get a thumbs up with at least 5 stars from a reputable reviewer.

For now, my Nisan re-bagded Mitsuoka will do just fine, thank you.

Siap lampu pun bergoyang sebab 100% plastik. Cuba tekan (ketuk pun takpe) depan kereta tu, lagi plastik. RM1.8 juta? Aku rasa bonet Gen.2 10X ganda lagi kuat. Corvette tu… Tak percaya cuba sendiri (aku cuba di 1 Utama haritu)

who cares if the savvy is avalaible with the 7 colors of the rainbow? the fact is most malaysians had lost faith in potong…we r angry for being taken for a ride in their lousy cars…and some car shapes looked nice at first, but teribble after a 4th or further observation…i used to luv the potong sawi's shape..some cars looked ugly at first but the more u look, the more nicer they looked…the myvi is one such car…just like some girls, sekali pandang, manyak cun, 2 kali pandang, telus lali

  • Agree with u see fat, savvy look a bit euro, ugly but still better than one french car that jus look like an aquarium bowl. The green looks nicer, relax, luv to see it. I hope to see complete package, AMT, ABS, Airbag in our PESB showroom. Myvi, the premium version is high tech, but the looks so family oriented and with that big butt, it just turn me off. Well beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Everyone have their own perception on beauty.

could not agree more with Shai.. I think savvy adds a more unique ( if i may use that word) design. Kudos for proton for that design, might be a little bit controversial, but bold move… I can not imagine the response if proton savvy looks like picanto (with its front grill looking like Hitler's moustache)…

I got savvy with green-appel colour, everybody said it’s nice look.

One thing I want to tell you,

Once I drived savvy, I feel like continental car.

More fantastic !!!! fuel consumption like Japanes car.

    Now’s a day fuel’s price quite exspensive,

It’s good for less budget’s life

I've been working in Langkawi for more than 5 years and owned 4 cars. (Sorry guys… cars are cheaper over there). I promised myself, as long as I'm in Langkawi, I will not buy proton cars. (Yea la … rugi ma…if you dont take the opprtunity).

So, over the years I've owned Mazda Familia 1.5A (1995 version-this model is the same design as ford lynx), Opel Astra 1.6MT (1996), Opel Vectra 2.0A (1996) and recently Toyota Avanza 1.3A (2005).

Let just say, I have driven japan cars and continental cars. I tell you, if you have driven continental car, drive japanese car wont be the same.

Now I got a new job at kl. I could not bring any of my car here coz the taxes are very high. (even after 10 years).

As promised earlier I will only drive proton when I here. I've test drive various produa & proton cars but there only one car that marely close to the comfort continenental car. And you've guest it… its proton savvy.

Even the salesman told me of the different reverse gear position, I was not suprised coz the technology is the same as my 1996 Opel Astra.

I am glad now that I can still feel the confort of continental car when driving my apple green proton savvy 1.3MT.

Suprise proton can come up with this car the same time I got transfered to KL.

  • I saw Savvy AMT few weeks ago in Penang, and yes, it was metal grey colour. The sales told that i was equipped with "triptronic", and priced at around RM45K.

Not sure about the mantainance? Proton expert pls advice..

  • After I tested Savvy AMT at PE HQ (Centre of Excellence) this Monday, I changed my order from MT to AMT straight away. Although the price difference is about RM6K becoz of the discount given to the MT for the Proton 20 years celebration, I still think it is worthwhile to make the switch to AMT.

For those of you who are eyeing at Savvy, please hold your horses and ask for a test drive on MT and AMT then decide what is best for you. For me, the AMT offers the performance and responsiveness of the MT plus the convenience of Automatic. This makes it a real fun to drive in all traffic conditions.

One remark though, the Auto mode (D) is a bit jerking bcoz the quickshift gear is known for quick to shift but slow to adapt.

I am happy to share with you my AMT experience when I get my car next week.

  • Having tested Savvy AMT at PE HQ (Centre of Excellence) on Monday, I changed my earlier booking from MT to AMT straight away. Although this means havnig to pay another RM6K becoz of the discount given to the MT for the Proton 20 years celebration, I personally think it is the right thing to do.

For those of you who are eyeing at Savvy, please go hesitate to go for test drive on MT and AMT then decide what is best for you. For me, the AMT offers the same performance and responsiveness of Savvy MT plus the convenience of Automatic. This makes it a real fun car to drive in all traffic conditions.

One remark though, the Auto mode (D) is a bit jerking when switching gear during the test drive. This is most likely due to the Quickshift gearbox in the AMT that is known for quick to shift but slow to adapt.

I am getting my Savvy AMT next week, so I am looking forward to reading more REAL experiences from the REAL AMT owner in the near future.

Yes, the Apple Green colour Savvy was in fact added to the range some 2 months ago.

Auto analysts I spoke to feel PROTON was being very “strange” about their colour schemes for the Savvy. At launch, only three colours were available, and none were light. Light colours can add a dimension of size to smaller cars.

There was also an absence of light solid colours, usually added to the economy range of a carmaker to make it cheaper (evidenced by the 1.3 Gen2 range).
