Daihatsu Boon X4

daihatsu_boon_x4_1.jpg

Daihatsu has released a new variant of the Daihatsu Boon called the Daihatsu Boon X4. It reminds me of the old Daihatsu Charade GTTI. The Daihatsu Boon X4 looks like a great basis for a rally car, if you could somehow get around it’s slightly high center of gravity. Let’s have a look at the specifications.

daihatsu_boon_x4_2.jpg

The Daihatsu Boon X4 is powered by a turbocharged intercooled 936cc engine instead of the 1.3 litre intercooler turbo K3-VET Daihatsu YRV engine. This engine is called the KJ-VET, which is a 1.0 litre DOHC 4-cylinder engine making 133hp at 7200rpm and 133Nm of torque at 3600rpm. Very nice and not too over the top power figures for a car that size and weight, and it’s linked to a 5-speed manual transmission. It also comes with full-time 4WD. Daihatsu gave the Daihatsu Boon X4 a bonnet air scoop to feed cool air to it’s top-mounted intercooler.

This engine swap should be pretty popular if you have the dough for the Perodua Myvi or other Perodua vehicles who want to go the turbocharged way if you have enough money. Although the 1.3 litre K3-VET has abit more power at 140hp, it only comes with an automatic transmission with sequential shift options. Manual versions are very hard to find, if it even exists at all. The 1.0 litre KJ-VET halfcuts has slightly less power but it makes up for it with the availability of a manual transmission.

with all the power available, i wonder if it's suspension can take it or not. remember the SSO in bukit jalil some times back?

Looks sporty, i think it's a lil too tall and "skinny" to have such power. Think abt the power over weight ratio. a lift-up might occurs during coenering, anyway this is just prediction, will never know till test drive is done.

This one is AWD! Definately has stronger chassis parts to take all the stress. Now I wonder if can convert a stock 1.0 MyVi to AWD? If bolt on, syiok! :)

acbc: i don't think you can bolt-on to the myvi 1.0. the myvi 1.0 uses EJ-VE, this one is from the KJ family. different engine family.

yeah..i thought HatukNgkau is right..the shootout at Bukit Jalil sometime back do concern me about the suspension. That huge power actually need more stable chasis. but hey, who cares? its only 1.0 yet it churns out 130+ hp.awesome!

This could inspire many Myvi owners who wants to do their own 'facelift' to their own Myvi. I have to say the front looks good. 'Quite GARANG', actually. But I doubt there are any changes to the rear. I don't like the rear look as much as I dislikes Savvy's.

I heard from my brother that some speed junkies has swapped K3-VE into Kelisa. And K3-VET's half cut are already available in some chop shops here. I'm not suprise if there are already K3-VET powered Myvi on the road today. Too bad P2 didn't get the licence to produce a Turbo version of Myvi. This only made the chop shop towkey smiles even wider.

Engine family not an issue… just use back the mountings. But, must take a closer look first.

Just to remind everybody that the Myvi at SSO Bukit Jalil was modded – not sure what else was tempered with, which might have caused the major damage.

Haha, the front of this Boon looks big, a bg-headed car, but it's gotta be cool to have 130hp and AWD on such a small car, must be fun to drive!

Unlike older cars… Galant VR4 vs Galant Super Saloon, where the floorpan is totally different (require extensive chassis mods). New modern cars now share the same floorpan design. Example is the 7th generation Galant / Eterna where u can bolt-on the AWD to a non-AWD model without any chassis mods. Reason is very simple: SAVE COST.

I'm sure this Daihatsu Boon X4 has the same floorpan as the local MyVi. So, AWD bolt-on is possible. Then again, u definately need to do transplant all together which can cost up RM 20k easily.

133Nm of torque at 3600rpm and 4wd, that really isnt much torque at all, especially once you've taken transmission losses thru the AWD drivertrain into account.

lance, myvvi at bukit jalil belongs to perodua, and was modified by their RnD team specifically for autocross. I think "tampering" is the wrong term to use when referring to a car manufacturer modifying their own cars. ;)
