[...] You’ll also find Toyota’s new flagship 1.8 liter Dual VVT-i engine under the hood. A comparison with the previous generation 1.8 liter VVT-i can be found here. Although the new 2ZR-FE comes with a new CVT gearbox option, the Corolla for the Chinese market will come with either a 4-speed auto or a 6-speed manual. The previous Corolla only had a 5-speed manual, while the auto was also a 4-speed. A pity, the Civic has moved on to a 5-speed auto with two overdrive gears. [...]

[...] There are two engine variants - a lower-end 2NZ-FE 1.5 liter VVT-i putting out 110PS at 6,000rpm and 140Nm of torque at 4,400rpm, similiar to the Toyota Vios. The higher-end model comes with the new 2ZR-FE Dual-VVTi engine, with 1.8 liters of displacement producing 136PS at 6,000rpm and 175Nm of torque at 4,400rpm. Compared to Honda’s current flagship 1.8 liter the R18A1, Toyota’s new engine beats it by 1Nm of peak torque, but loses in terms of horsepower, which is pretty amazing for Honda since the Honda unit is a SOHC while this new Toyota is a DOHC unit. Honda’s torque also peaks 100rpm lower than the Toyota unit. And these figures are for the 2WD models that come in either a Super CVT-i continuously variable transmission or a 5-speed manual. As for the 4WD Super-CVT-i units, for some reason oblivious to me right now the 1.5 liter makes less power at 105PS, and the 1.8 liter only makes 125PS. Torque figures are 135Nm at 4,400rpm and 163Nm at 4,400rpm respectively. While the worth of a car is not to be measured by it’s engine alone, Honda seems to have a slight edge on engine technology here. But the new JDM Corolla is packed with nice features which you will read about further down. [...]

[...] Toyota has revaled the new flagship Toyota Yaris model called the Toyota Yaris TS at the 2006 Paris Motor Show. The new Toyota Yaris TS is powered by Toyota’s new flagship Dual VVT-i 1.8 liter engine which makes 130bhp at 6,000rpm and max torque of 173Nm at 4,400rpm. With the new Dual VVT-i engine, Valve timing is adjusted on both intake and exhaust valves. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The little hatch goes from 0-100km/h in 9.3 seconds.
[...] The Toyota Auris takes on similiar design cues to the Toyota Yaris hatch, with a pronounced bulgy bonnet, a familiar front grille and bold headlamps. The bumper looks similiar to the design of the facelifted Toyota Vios. Engine options will feature Toyota’s new flagship 1.8 liter unit, as well as a 2.2 liter D4-D turbodiesel. toyota press release says the 1zzfe had vvti on the exhaust valves. the photos above is of the new 2zrfe engine, not the 1zzfe.

is there anyone here with better toyota technical know-how to clear things up?

paul, i think the 1zzFe has its VTC on the intake cam, not exhaust. its more common to have VTC on the intake cam rather than exhaust cam anyway.
from the photo above, u can see a big lump of cylinder on the intake cam, the right side with the black intake manifold. thats the VTC gearbox/actuator module.

for reference
