Joining Volkswagen’s R family which previously consisted of only the Volkswagen Golf R32 is a new sedan and estate version of the Passat called the Volkswagen Passat R36 Sedan and the Volkswagen Passat R36 Variant (estate).
The new R36 Passat family, the most powerful production Passat of all time (discount the awesome twin turbocharged 575 horsepower Passat R GT concept, that’s not for production yet) features Volkswagen’s new 3.6 litre V6 FSI, mated to a 6-speed DSG gearbox as well as 4MOTION all wheel drive, resulting in a 300hp monster that goes from 0-100km/h in 5.6 seconds for the sedan and 5.8 seconds for the heavier Variant estate. Volkswagen seems to have chosen the Variant moniker for it’s estate/station wagon products, and for those who want an alternative to the Audi A4 Avant can perhaps go for this Passat R32 Variant.
For detailed specs on the R36 trim, as well as more photos, have a look at the post content after the jump! This looks yummy.

Interior look kinda dull…
*jaw drops* lol nice car since it's VW!
If only Passat is to be Perdana replacement…..
I can only dream of that now…..
…interior design…looks like….volvo s series meh…….continental concept…..
not bad.
but exterior a bit look like BMW series + kia Spectra
interior nice…
I tot that the interior looks BMWish… rite?
damn handsome outside…
Wow… How I hope that Proton will merge with VW… Oh, pls pls pls pls pls…
exterior like have some toyota's look??.. don't ya think?.. macam sudah kawin with japs kinda design.. sikit honda pun ada… I guess the trend now is like that arr… interior mmg pure conti….simple & classic….
I remember sometimes ago, Paul said that the new perdana replacement model will be using this passat model..Is it true? So, it is nice..better than mitsubishi 380.
The front grill ala Audi 1-piece grill looks a bit flashy. If its black, with a trim of chrome, the car will look even better, but alas, this is the trademark of the R32.
Coupled with an FSi engine, this model will sell well in Msia., if the price is right, ofcourse.
paul …aren't you gonna post about the mazda 3 launching recently?
better talk about Passat.. LOL
Cire, if the Passat or any other VW racy versions are brought here, the price will never be right for the masses. :-(
I'm sure this one is bigger than the A4 and the 3-series. whodz, i don't think proton will be using the passat model for its perdana replacement. they've already brought the mitsu 380 from aussie for serious testing here using a smaller 2.5l 4cyl engine, according to certain souce.
Then its really a set-back as I do not think a jappie chassis would be as strong as a conti car. And interior feature wise, it will be very bare compared with what Passat have to offer.
But nevertheless, lets reserve the judgement first and see how it goes first for the Mitsu.
Lovely! But I have this feeling that the R36 might end up like its bigger brother the Phaeton.
What it seems right now is that VW will be buying over Proton's manufacturing facilities but model sharing is still another subject for them to discuss. VW's previous help-outs include Skoda, Audi, Lambo and SEAT, all of which are now under the VW family. The so called assistance-buy-out policy for VW involves a majority shareholding stake as well, and hence, if the deal between Proton and VW are limited to just the manufacturing facilities and no majority stake at the table, chances are that the royalty required for Proton to use a current VW car will be sky high….
The rear overhang is a little long on the Passat, but it's a nice looking car, I like the wagon version too.
VW never copies toyota or honda's design. its bcos the new camry grille copies/looks like audi's 1 piece grille…. and vw owns audi…they are just using their own design.
Really looks like an Audi from far…
wow…jaw-dropping car..
VW owns Audi, so it is simply VW's prerogative to ape Audi design cues. :)
VW even knicked the air vent design from the Audi R8. Definitely gives it an edgier look compared to other sedans of the same range. VW owns Audi anyway. As long as the cars look and perform well they will definitely sell very well.
Dad, I want 1..! haha
Euwwww……….damn ugly……..design outdated…..ol' man taste………typical bavarian fascia……….bowing bowing :0 :0 Zzzzzzz……….Lampu Gen2 some more……..
( my opinion only )
yeah.. this concept is quite outdated (look at front & rear lamps)… the new camry, belta & civic have moved to new level of style….
You know, Volkswagen should just continue and take the savour of their nice cars themselves while Proton Malaysia can go die… Who cares about them anyway?!
i bet this car will depreciate very heavily. the VW name doesn't have enough cachet yet, and it can't seem to make up its mind whether it's sporty or solid.
the person who said it'll be the second phaeton is – i think – exactly right. but it may fare a bit better since it's not quite aiming so high.
still, it will be a great second hand buy a few years down the road :D
Haha…guess what? I bet we'll start to see a growing number of these being used as minicabs in the UK. Otherwise they'd normally drive cars ranging from Nissan Almera and Ford Mondeo to Audi A6 and Merc E-Class. The Passat R36 might fall somewhere in between, I reckon. Or it could very well start becoming popular as rep-mobiles (company cars). :P
The taillights of the Passat Sedan looks similar to Nissan 535s, the 4-door version Skyline.
The Passat Variant looks like the Honda Odyssey at certain angles.
But anyway, I like both, especially the Sedan version. In terms of interior/exterior design, performance and built quality, it is better than Camry or Accord. Just like the mighty Touareg, the Passat is a road monster loaded with super power.
want one if it free, great sport sedan,
just that its body a bit WHALE-y on the given wheelbase,
looks nice
