PGlang: what you said about comparing proton to china car makers is pretty narrowminded..

unlike china, malaysia respects international law, and we do enforce IP laws.. yes.. true, we have a large market for pirated products in malaysia, but not as large as many other asian countries.. but more importantly, there is visible enforcement. if our govt. does not care about it, there will be no enforcement at all.

at the very least.. i’m still proud that proton took the hard way to design and build their own car.. not everything worked out fine and dandy, but at least they didnt have to resort to blatant copying. Its because of amount of time and money spent to build up a credible manufacturing business and R&D facility, there are now several large foreign companies who want to buy into proton. If there is no value there as many people on this forum claim, these large companies wouldn’t even bother to come here, and put in a bid.

Chinese are smart for everything…They will make it to be number ONE eventually…Although the quality is not up to our expectation, they are improving because of their openess, competitiveness, and ceratinly the smartest way to be successful. Malu eh.. Proton !!! Malaysia tak boleh!!!

the smart fortwo takes the ease of parking city car concept further, supposedly in the space that you can park one car, you can park TWO smart fortwos. can you park two kancils in the space of one car?

i had already stated that this is not so much of an engineering clone but more of a concept clone, cos the concept and outlook is copied but not the engineering.

i though when we said copy or clone, we are talking about enginnering clone.
so if the smart fortwo is the first to come out the concept for the two,
than other maker must pay the fee for them to come out the same
concept car for two person?
and i think many sport car also design for two person only,
isn’t smart fortwo not the first to had this for two concept?
i just confuse, any one can explain?

If they can bring it in and sell it below 20K, there will be a market for this. By the way BMW used to copy design wholesale from British Austin, the word “Jerry built” was a term to describe cheap and low quality German products befire WW1. And now….

if this makes is serious copy cat, then it would come with some kind of Tridion shell… (i mean the copy cat version of Tridion shell….may be weaker version)

still i think its shell would much stronger than a Kancil…. Kelisa…..

ok, let me voluntary translate some of the information there, only a few parts….
1) its powered by a 0.8L engine similar to the one found in Chery QQ, and another variant is 1.1L engine with DOHC, with multipoint fuel injection, from Bosch (memang cetak rompak Smart punya nih…)
2) this car has large full tank, FC is 4L/100km, one full tank can go nearly 1000km (wow, can fight D-Max liaw…)
3) it has pass QC test in China with 50km/h crash test….

I don’t know bout you guys… but I think a nice “copy-cat” car will sell better than an all original ugly car. Marketing point of view, a success. That’s why most ppl will stick to RM8 a piece DVD instead of RM100+ a piece even thought the higher end one will most definately be trouble free.

Truth be said, it’s because of the lack of IP enforcement which is why the world is flocking to China. Just the other day came by a claimed BMW speciallist work shop (in KL) and was darned surprised to see them doing major repairs including diagnostics on a mini cooper, an E90 (new 5-Series) and E64 (new 6). The man said he gets his not so legal BMW source codes including updates from a BMW dealer cousin of his in China. I believe him.
