It's so much fun when you have money, a pleasure which i suspect will elude me in this lifetime. I wonder how loud it really is in the flesh instead of through speakers.
Actually in essence, it is better to have an after-market blow off valve in comparison to the stock standard in some cases. If the factory standard was made of plastic and rubber, it would not withstand high pressure and is sustainable to wear and tear.
If this E92 BMW 335i owner had installed the B.O.V with a customised aluminium intake and intercooler piping, it would probably mean that he had welded the B.O.V on to the piping instead of securing it with a clamp which is normal on turbocharged cars.
This would mean it is secure and fastened. The after-market blow off valves have been known to work very well and have been tested.
The job of a blow off valve is to effectively remove surged air that is stuck in between the engine manifold and the turbine when the gate to the manifold has been closed aka foot has released from the accelerator.
The B.O.V will then eject the unused air back into the atmosphere and creating that familiar "pssh" sound you normally hear in most cases.

The wastegate you are refering to is the internal wastegate found within the turbine itself. The blow off valve is a seperate entity from the turbine which is connected in the pipe in between the turbine and the engine manifold.
Its job is to remove excess air from being recirculated back to the turbine fins and counter reversing their spin angle. If the turbine fins suddenly spin in the reverse direction in result of the air that is shot back to it, it would damage the fins very badly and will require replacing or servicing.
Errr… is it only me or am I the only one who doesn't see what the big deal is about having a loud BOV?
KL roads are jam packed with turbo cars, all with BOVs, and some have external wastegates exhausting straight out bypassing the exhaust. Talk about a 'fierce' noise.
if BOVs are so good, why wouldnt the egineers at bmw just install as an OEM? i figured that since they're alot smarter than us regular folks, there has to beanother reason BOVs are not OEM, price shouldnt be a factor, at their production volume, bmw can aquire them for a song.
cost maybe and not everyone wants to have that sound.
me not expert but, BOV is good thingy releasing back pressure, therefore keeping the turbine spooling, thus can reduce turbo lag, at a closed throttle position,
that why sometime heel and toe driving at corner to keep the throttle open is simply reducing of backpressure for the turbine, thus accelerate out with no or less lag,
like that ka?
i prefer sound damping for BOV, (gonna be an ugly small muffler sticking out)

I think it cheapens the feel of the vehicle. BMW engineers must have spent many hours to hone this engine so that it doesn't feel or sound like a turbocharged engine. The end result is a very smooth, very refined and civilised engine, which fits perfectly into an upmarket car. And what do some people do? They hooliganise it. What does a after market BOV do for a stock engine anyway? I'd understand if he modified certain things, increased boost pressure or what not. Otherwise, it's just for the pose factor.

i wouldnt want my BOV vented out to atmostphere especially on a e92 335i….no way man!!! i would hav vent it back to the intake… and unless the owner has changed to a bigger turbo or had the boost pressure increased, the stock BOV will definately be adequate to handle backpressure when the throttle is close…

what a shame, the guy should have carried some speed into the corner, pull the e-brake, power on and some counter steer…
the combination of the bov sound and smoking tyres would have been heavenly…

Most turbocharged cars come with a blow off valve in factory standard trim. What i'm saying is that there are better, more effective ones in the market. I do agree that replacing the factory standard one with an aftermarket just for the sound may be poncey but we don't know for sure if the owner had made any changes to the turbine or ECU where he may be playing with higher boost.
Stock blow off valves are not meant to handle a high amount of boost. Another reason is maybe the owner sees it as a future modification part and just wanted to start early. We should not slam and condemn the owner just because we think its poncey. Its not as though he video-ed himself running someone over with his car.
Lets not get hypocritical.
