Future Volkswagen New Beetle design sketches

A German car magazine reported that Volkswagen will be ditching it’s retro looks of the Volkswagen New Beetle to something a little more modern and sporty, as can be seen from these sketches. The New New Beetle will be competing directly with the BMW MINI, thus has to share most of it’s attributes – invoking in it’s drivers a warm, friendly and familiar feeling, yet exciting because of it’s sporty potential.

Two more sketches after the jump.

well who can stop modernising beetle, …..but they just cant discard beetle's bug eye ,side chrome line and hot air vent at the rear, those are a strong element of beetle,

real sad to hear VW is ditching the classic beetle design…

when the mini can still retain its retro looks i dont see why the beetle cant..

if i want something a lil more modern and sporty there's always the golf!

I think VW should learn from Americans in creating modern designs with that retro look. For instance, Ford Mustang Pininfarina (italian help), Ford GT, Chrysler Prowler and Chevy Camaro concept. Although not as beautiful as its euro counterparts (except for Mustang Pininfarina), at least they didnt ditch that retro feel.

Its not impossible to redesign the Bettle with retro look. Just maintain the bug-eyed headlights, roundish taillights, wide wheel arches & sloping front bonnet. It will still have the appeal for both classic and modern car lovers.

Sometimes banging on the past is not really the best way forward. There are still space for new icons to emerge but the idea has to be fresh and innovative but mostly importantly accessable by the general public to make it a success.

Noooooo!!!! VW Shouldn't be messing with the classic beetle. Face lift while maintaining the icon signature shape is ok but this looks like a squashed bug. Mini is a whole different game, so why not just focus on a new mini fighter instead. The rear of the 3rd pic looks great as a Polo replacement.

No lah, i think this is for the new GOLF, its a waste if they disregard the original contour of the beetle………

eh nice sketch mah… but if the beetle will be like the first pic shown, then the tradition of beetle will be gone le… btw, i wonder the beetle is rear engined ya? if according to the first pic, then it might be front engined… will it be??? hmm…

The orange Beetle looks like our Satria Neo from the side angle.

The red Beetle convertible is Nissan 350Z Roadster's little brother.

And finally, the brown Beetle is totally insane, or should I say not exactly a Beetle anymore….

I still prefer the current Beetle, but the red Beetle convertible looks great!!!

when comes to sketch all wheel are drawn to fillup then whole wheel arches and this will improved its appearance…

but when it comes into real-life, production and launch, smaller wheels does had impact to its appearance!

the last design's hideous… anyways they shud stick to retro, it's the bug's charm. retro, but sport-modern… like the new mini. and make it rear engined. i still own a 1970 bug, proud of it :)
