“Germans care about quality and technical expertise. Americans only want money. They don’t care about the craftsmanship of the product."

Can't agree more, think Volkswagen and Proton now. Germans, quality. Japanese, innovation. Italian, beauty. French, quirkiness. British, charm. Malaysian? Souless copies with sub standard quality.

Argh, I forgot to mention that lately, they do improve their aftersales service, well, we can see the effect wit the building of the Autohaus concept, which sort of immediately caused everyone else to follow them wit 3S and even 4S dealers.

Funny. We are know that Germans care much about quality and craftmanship, but aren’t the Merc.cars have been branded the least reliable car in the continental stables? Its already for years that this brand have suffered bad press due to its inherited product problems, and poor after sales service.
Guess there are some proud Germans outthere that are either living in denial or too arrogant.

As for the stumbling block in VW-P1, its more actually on the political side and also “face” saving for the G. A failure that needs outsiders to bail it out. That is something that someone find its hard to swallow and accept. But sad but true, its bcos of their own doing that have resultant in what P1 is now.
----------------------------------------------
Nt quite true on the part Merc most unreliable, bt Merc have the quality of a Proton. If u make a direct comparison between an E-class' interior n say, Audi A6 n BMW 5-series, the Merc looks like it is made of paper. Bt it is true that Merc hv very bad after sales service, in 2004, they were 9 places from the bottom of JD Power Survey Customer Satisfaction.

"Other shareholders have blamed the failed partnership on cultural differences. “Germans care about quality and technical expertise. Americans only want money. They don’t care about the craftsmanship of the product. This is an arrangement that must end,” said Georg Nuemeier, also a DCX shareholder. “Ten years should have resulted in a better return. The fact is just that the marriage never worked,” said shareholder Klaus Fiereck."

Marriage never worked? LoL. I don't agree much. Look at the success story of Mazda-Ford-Volvo, GM-Opel-Holden (not that successful, but still OK) and Renault-Nissan alliance. I think the Germans are too arrogant and wouldn't admit mistakes on their side. The statement is like accusing Americans as opportunist, and the Germans are the only one who has the passion in making quality cars. They should work out on drastic turn-around plan & business process re-engineering rather than separating and cause more trouble to the shareholders..

If applied locally, this is probably one of the biggest stumbling block in VW case in taking over P1.
