TOKYO PREVIEW: Honda CR-Z Concept

Honda CR-Z

This is the Honda CR-Z, which stands for Compact Renaissance Zero – Honda’s third attempt at a modern interpretation of the Honda CR-X. The first was the Honda REMIX Concept shown late last year, and between that and now there was the Honda Small Hybrid Sports Concept but not many consider the latter as an interpretation of the CR-X. The Small Hybrid Sports Concept did however give us an indication that any future CR-X-like model from Honda would come with a hybrid system.

“The CR-Z comes with a new hybrid system developed by Honda whose breakthroughs allowed designers to get around such restrictions to achieve its lean cutting-edge look,” says Tetsuji Morikawa, a Honda Motor Co engineer.

You’ve got the customary LED headlamps that is a must on all concept cars in this age, and the front sports an oversized grille, also something that has been popular with concept car designs. Looks like Audi got it right from day one.

It will be displayed at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show next week.

Not as good looking as the 2nd gen though…

The CRX was popular because when it came out , it was cheap, economical and very fun to drive, yet practical (big boot), and the 2nd gen ended up quite good looking.

It might just end up like the 3rd gen….not selling very well..ends up being a chick car.

I don’t think this new one will hit all those CRX traits though… after all, its existance now is questionable, since we have a 2 door (Euro) Civic Type R.

2nd Gen CR-X was the best! Del Sol was a real let down. All show and no go. I kinda like this concept tho.

CR-X EF8 is still the best Honda ever made in my opinion. No emmisions restrictions which meant max power, superb handling, super light, super cool styling and it had that mean EF series look that cannot be matched.
This CR-Z looks cool and its has some of the same DNA, but it will never match the original CR-X.

nice rear. Did honda stole the meseratti front part or was it a mixture with the rx-8?

    Nevermind! Just forget it!

Its not easy to reserved with its back designed to obstruct rear-view and 3/4 view! The blind spot are too unsafe!

Still carry the CR-X styling features but if it wasn’t for the ‘H’ badge in the nose, it would appear that this is a Mazda descendent. If this is going into production, I hope the Honda guys re-design the interior cos seriously this one ain’t cool, futuristic? yes! Sports? No-hell-way…

While the styling is obviously very different, the glass roof and hatch does have CR-X genes in it, and a good thing too, helps make the hatch feel all that much spacious. The front looks like an RX’8s, with a Veilside R34 drag kit slapped on, love it.

CRX EF is still the best of all CRX series. Lightweight, snappy steering response, spot-on handling and still look fresh for a car that almost 20 years old. It is still in my wish list after all these years.

Although a concept is about what can be done rather than what will be done, I certainly hope that Honda will put this one on the production list. A truly Honda design!
