With the trend of engines moving towards smaller displacement engines with forced induction, we are looking at more companies entering the turbocharger business currently dominated by Garrett (Honeywell), Borgwarner, and IHI, of whom in total control a total of 88% of the market, with Garrett holding more than half at 56%.
Joining new competitor Daimler as newbies in the turbocharging market is Robert Bosch, who will be setting up a 50:50 joint venture with German company Mahle to develop and sell turbochargers. The companies will invest an unknown three-digit million Euros into Bosch Mahle Turbo Systems, and the first Bosch Mahle turbochargers will roll off the production line in 2010.
