As reported in November last year, Toyota will be displaying a compact SUV destined for the European market at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, and it will be called the Toyota Urban Cruiser. At that point I mentioned that the new small SUV would be based on the Toyota ist/Scion xD underpinings, but what I did not expect Toyota to do was to give Europe a copy with minimal exterior styling differences and a jacked up suspension!

Expect either a 1.5 liter VVT-i from our Vios or a 1.8 liter Dual VVT-i engine to be slotted in the new Toyota Urban Cruiser SUV. Only one front three quarter photo have been released by Toyota at the moment, so wait for more photos and details to be revealed when the vehicle is displayed at Geneva 2008.

so they take a perfectly decent car and jacked it up so that it would handle worse (higher center of gravity) and made it slower and less economical (higher aerodynamic drag) and people would buy?

This current pseudo suv trend is stupid. Why anybody would choose a faux suv like the Rush over the g livina which is faster, handles better and more economical is beyond me…

It aint stupid, its creative and pure business oriented…its all about being able to push the limits and create more choices for the mass, current customers shouldnt jz be confined to stringent platforms as such happened in the past. Now its the new era of exploring the outburst of many niche market segment , they:re cars for each segments. Added to it, these companies as in this case Toyota (which happens to be one the biggest automaker, and still the top 2 along with GM) researched thoroughly within their marketing and R&D department for optimum results which always been the case for Toyota models. For someone to like nor dislike is a subjective matter, but to me its good to have all these variations of models and platform emerging. Variants like these keeps the automotive world alive and exciting…

hmmm typical toyota design..just play safe and sell their badge…toyota should not feel comfortable with their status now…one day consumer will be realize they have been drive a dull car and pay big bucks buying a badge…when this happen toyota will suffer a lot…

I know the designers are trying to maximise interior space, which is fine.
Lately, the exterior design of these cars are getting a lot of inspiration from COCKROACH and DUGONG.

    Back to nature, I guess

What happen to the good old days when the looks of the car can simply mesmerize people? A design that make the car desirable by many.
