To be historically accurate, Hyundai first rolled Hyundai Pony in 1976. Proton first produced Proton Saga in 1985. They were only 9 years apart. Proton did receive lots of technical help from Mitsubishi.

In 1986 (10 years after first production) Hyundai entered US market with Hyundai Excel. Where is Proton after 22 years its first production?

Speaking about competition in US market,
Honda Accord / Toyota Camry (with automatic, power windows/locks) sells for RM$65K. Yes, not a type, it’s only RM$65,000.

Hyundai still operates in US, where is Proton? Please don’t even mention hybrid!

First true proton was only launched in 2000, thats a mere 8 years ago.. so its entirely ridiculous to compare proton and hyundai. chanel, i dont think our taxes go to proton at all. of course the company was started on govt money(aka tax money). i didnt pay any taxes then of course.. but i believe its been a self sustaining company for a long long time already. even during the worst period for proton, around 2005-2006 when they were posting losses in the hundreds of millions, there was no govt. bail out.. but instead, they've managed to pull themselves out of it by restructuring, and coming up with new models which are selling well. so yes. i think proton are on a better path today than they were last time. but no where in the league of hyundai for sure.
