Volkswagen Golf Mk6 to get new 1.2 liter engine

Volkswagen Golf Mark 5

The MkVI Volkswagen Golf will make its debut in October this year, which should lead to the next generation Volkswagen GTI soon after. The MkVI GTI should result in a few MkV GTIs to appear on the second hand market, something thats apparently quite a rarity in Malaysia – it seems everyone is just really really happy with their MkV!

But that’s not the point of this story. What we have here is a detail revealed about the most baseline of Golfs, which will feature a 75 horsepower 1.0 litre or 1.2 litre TSI engine, depending on whether Volkswagen finally decides on a 3-cylinder or 4-cylinder displacement, according to Volkswagen powertrain research manager Wolfgang Steiger.

A 1.2 litre inline-3 should be likely, as Volkswagen has already introduced a new 1.2 litre inline-3 petrol engine with the fourth generation SEAT Ibiza not too long ago. This new engine will not appear in the initial MkVI Golf line-up, only to be added earliest in 2009.

1.2l sounds like Savvy capacity. Small car? or with turbo maybe.

Why are they downsizing the engines in the Golf? The Golf despite being a hatchback is in no way a lightweight.

Perhaps the 1.2 would be more suited to the Polo.

Even the North American VW Rabbit which is VW’s base car gets powered by a 2.5L

Get your facts right. VW Cross Polo, 1.6 with 6 Speed Tiptronic is RM108,888.
