The total number of vehicles built and sold is not the most important factor in evaluating a company's performance.

The most important is its ability to control it operating cost in terms of labor, cost of raw materiel such as steel, plasitics, etc, cost of the electronics components and development software integrated into the car electronics. Car electronics accounts for about 15 percent of the whole car selling price. Also a manufacturer must be able to control his fabrication partner with very stringent and flexible procurement contract in insuring that all provided materiel ( raw Steel, plastic, automated production equipment, electronics components etc) are delivered to car manufacturer in accordance with the ingineering specifications. Consequently the manufacturer must have an effective quality control system and a quality assurance system well in place at all stages of car technical design, material procurement, production equipment ( robots, tools, calibrations standards etc), and finally line assembly and final delivery.

The sole purpose of the operation is to cut the all the cost at a minimum value while closely meeting the ingeeniring design specifications, to maximize the profits margin in such a way that the company yield profit to continue further development in accordance with the company's marketting strategy which ought be the fistt criteria that govers the technical design and overall fabrication steps.

From the viewpopint of technical performance, the main difficulty is to maintain production equipment and fabrication and line tools according to engineering standards in such a way that the final result matches the intended marketting planning and engineering specifications.

A company may have excellent design but may show severe weaknesses in implementing the design yelding fabrication errors resulting in customers complaints and drop in sales and profits.

I believe that companies that have excellent marketting strategy and that are capable of controlling all their contractual cost ( personnal, materiel, procurement contract etc ) are those who are to succeed to make profit to their share holders and thus show up great quality product.

Why Kia and Hyundai are joined together as 1 company?
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hyundai & Kia are the same company. Just think of GM, they don't have GM branded cars but instead Chevrolet, Cadillac, Holden, Opel and many more. Speaking of Proton, they turned down the chance be among THE TOP 3 auto makers in the world if they merge with Volkswagen ;))

I am not sure which figure is right cos i read somewhere last year that GM managed to edge Toyota sales slightly by end of 2007.
Anyway i would like to point out that it is not how many cars you sell, rather it is how much margine you make per car. For example, if you notice BMW or MercBenz is not in the list but they make more money per car compared to those in the top 10.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, beemer & merc should make more money per car than others, but how much in terms of percentage? BTW the most profitable auto company is Porsche. some people say they are essentially 'a financial firm that happens to make cars' due to their large profit from non-auto manufacturing activities (they own 40% of VAG, therefore VAG's gain is Porsche's profit too).

Cheaper car, almost similar copycat design as other Japanese makers? The volumes do not reflect the quality build/technology of the car

First, congratulate Hyundai-Kia Motors for doing a great job...
So, seems that VAG and Hyundai are catching up faster while GM and Ford seems to be dropping. By the way, hope that Hyundai and VAG will do even better this year.
