thanks BMW...

btw... the name PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplungs) means Porsche Double Clutch, whereas DSG (DirektSchaltGetriebe) means Direct Control Gear. DSG was designed by BorgWarner and initaially licensed to Volkswagen AG, so it is not VW design to begin with whereas Porsche designed the gearbox internally.

For those who are interested in the type of transmission available now, you should buy the TopGear Malaysia July 2008 issue. There is a brief explanation on this matter there.

kingbrutal, you are right. porsche were the 1st people to develop it. they are totally different from one another, and the 2 companies did not work together on it.

besides that, vw didnt design and produce the DSG either, they had a partner, american company, borg warner to do the job for them.

PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplungs) or PDK
Direct-Shift Gearbox (DirektSchaltGetriebe) or DSG

Porsche developed the PDK in the 80's for the Weissach's Le Mans cars in 1983. It can handle up to 440Nm whereas the DSG only 250Nm. Gear change in the PDK is 200msec and DSG is quoted at 8msec (not sure abt this - please clarify PT). It may have the same principal but they are designed differently by different company. DSG is designed for road car whereas the PDK is for sport car.

>7 gears..reduced fuel consumption like it really does matter in a sports car

Yes, it does. At least you can go further... *swoon at Audi R8*

FC doesn't matters much in "race cars", but not for "sport cars" that could double as normal daily commute cars. :)

Marvellous video and explanation. The same thing with DSG, just a different name. Tomorrow we should produce our very own dual clutches gearbox and name it 'our way'.

Some names come to my mind.

"Kekotak Gandar Klutch Berganda"

Imagine a matsalleh pronouncing this.. it will surely sound sophisticated out of the world bleeding edge technology..!

ps: Sori I dont know what 'clutch' is called in Malay.. anybody knows?

not surprising, considering how the 2 companies has ties with 1 another.

the only thing our Proton-Lotus exchange have is the "Lotus tuning, and suspension"

real showstopper....yeah.
