3rd Generation Toyota Prius with Hybrid Synergy Drive: Official Details and Photos

2010 Toyota Prius

The new third generation Toyota Prius is rated at 50mpg, but its sales may not be exceedingly spectacular during these (temporary) times of low oil prices. Prius sales dropped 45% in the end of 2008, and things are so bad across the product range that they’ve announced that they’re suspending all vehicle production in all 12 Japanese plants for 11 days over February and March.

Even if oil prices don’t rise in the near future, Toyota is hoping for the whole “greening” of America to boost Prius sales, fueled by demand from environmentally-conscious buyers, as long as they don’t find out how damaging to the environment the production of a Prius is, despite the Prius itself being a greener car than a regular sedan or hatchback.

2010 Toyota Prius

Toyota says the new Prius is roomier, quieter, more advanced and has more equipment. It even has a moonroof equipped with a solar panel located over the rear seating area. As previously speculated, the solar panels only powers the air circulation fan for the air conditioning system, not even the whole air conditioning system! This fan can function while the car is unoccupied, which means it can keep the car’s interior cool while it is parked under the hot sun.

2010 Toyota Prius

As for styling, the original shape has been retained since it has become iconic, defining what a hybrid should look like so much that even Honda was “inspired” by it for the new second generation Honda Insight. But it is larger, with the original shape stretched and moulded to its new proportions. The front headlamps have a unique shape to them, okay maybe not exactly unique, we recently saw the exact same thing on the new Nissan 370Z!

2010 Toyota Prius

The Atkinson cycle engine under the hood is now larger and more powerful, clocking in at 1.8 litres on the displacement scale and putting out 98 horsepower at 5,200rpm and 142Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. The electric motor puts out 80hp and 208Nm of torque, but combined output of the two systems are 134 horsepower. Power from the two “engines” go through an electronically controlled CVT transmission. The hybrid battery pack is still a NiMH (no move to lithium ion yet). The Prius can run in 3 modes – EV, Eco and Power. EV is an electric-only mode (which can run for about 1.6km, good for short trips to the shop or mamak), while Eco and Power should be self explanatory.

2010 Toyota Prius

There are a few engineering improvements in the new Prius over the old one, especially in teh area of the Hybrid Synergy Drive system. The transaxle is now lighter and reduces torque losses by as much as 20%. The inverter has a new direct cooling system which results in a smaller size and lighter weight. A new brake energy regeneration system has also been fitted. The system also uses exhaust gas heat to help warm up the engine during startup for improved emissions and performance. This exhaust gas heat is also used to heat up the passenger cabin more efficiently. The body uses aluminium in the hood, rear hatch, front suspension axle and brake caliper to reduce weight.

2009 Tokyo Motorshow might be cancelled

Tokyo Motorshow 2009

The Tokyo Motorshow is currently a biennial event, as in it only happens once in every two years. The last time was in 2007, so by right there should be a Tokyo Motorshow this year but now the 2009 edition is in doubt, as the Japan Automobile Manufacturers’ Association is debating whether to cancel it in light of the bad economy.

According to JAMA executive director Toshihiro Iwatake, there are a few companies who are of the opinion that the show should not be organized under present conditions, however JAMA itself does not share the sentiments. Some of the exhibitors that usually have a display at the show have not registered yet, and the registration deadline has already passed, but the good news is all Japanese and German manufacturers have signed up. The missing ones could be the boys from Detroit.

A decision whether to cancel the show or not will be made by early February as the Makuhari Messe exhibition center has to be booked by late February. The motorshow is scheduled to take place in end-October 2009 until early-November 2009. This year’s motorshow theme is “Fun driving for us, eco-driving for earth”, which somehow sounds alot like Honda came up with it.

AP system may be extended until 2020

MITIMinister of International Trade and Industry Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin reports that his ministry has received requests from AP holders for the AP system to be extended until 2020. The AP system was originally scheduled to end by December 31st 2010, which is the end of next year. But what’s even worse news is that according to StarBiz’s unnamed sources, the government has already tentatively approved for the AP system to be extended until 2010. That’s more than a decade of hand-outs to go. Is this the eagerly-awaited NAP review they’ve been talking about?

Tan Sri Muhyiddin said the government would try to “lead errant AP holders back on track”, and convert them into viable businesses instead of just very rich paper traders. He also said he found out that permits were sold to “parties who shouldn’t be owning them”.

Some AP holders have successfully built proper businesses from the money they earned through APs, though many will argue that it is still an unfair system in whole because only a selected few are handed out this chance to earn enough capital from the APs to grow their businesses. Naza is one prominent example. They’ve even recently gone into the F&B industry and that is working out quite well for them. Just look at the queues outside Bubba Gump in Mutiara Damansara.

2010 Lexus HS 250h dedicated hybrid with Camry Hybrid powertrain makes production debut!

Lexus HS 250h

Despite it’s somewhat concept-like looks, thanks to so many car manufacturers releasing concept cars that are near production models totally changing our opinion of what a concept model looks like these days, the new 2010 Lexus HS 250h is a production model that will debut in late summer this year. But despite being a production model apparently specifications are still preliminary, though it’s very likely most if not all of what’s been released at the Detroit show will make it into the car in the showrooms this summer. It will slot in between the ES and the IS as an entry level hybrid car.

Lexus HS 250h

The new Lexus HS 250h is a front wheel drive sedan which has similiar proportions to the UK’s Toyota Avensis in terms of height, width and length, and in fact it shares the same 2,700mm wheelbase. In comparison, the Lexus ES/Camry’s wheelbase is 2,776mm while even the wheelbase of the IS is longer at 2,730mm. It’s amusing how a luxury American C-segment car can have a longer wheelbase than an European D-segment car, but the latter have traditionally been smaller than its American counterparts anyway. I guess that’s how superminis survive/thrive in Europe. I believe the HS is classified as a front-wheel drive non-sporty hybrid counterpart to the IS in the Lexus range, just like what the ES is to the GS (but the ES does without dedicated hybrid engine). Frankly I wonder if this is just a reskinned Euro Toyota Avensis with the Camry Hybrid’s powertrain thrown in, with the interior then loaded up with high-specs.

Lexus HS 250h

The drivetrain in the HS 250h is lifted from the Toyota Camry and thus retains its 2.4 litre Atkinson cycle engine, the electric motor, front wheel drive layout and CVT transmission. The engine and electric motor combination puts out a combined total output of 187 horsepower, but no torque figures have been released at this time. The engine is rated as a SULEV engine thanks to low emissions even on 87-octane gasoline. The combustion engine uses cooling piston oil jets, an optimized balance shaft rate for improved NVH properties, and a hot-air venting system mounted behind the radiator. An exhaust heat recovery system reduces the amount of time it takes to warm the engine up, thus enabling earlier activation of auto-start-stop functions.

Lexus HS 250h

As hybrid screams futuristic, it’s not surprising to know the interior has a decent amount of “innovations”. For one, the interior uses plant-based, carbon-neutral “Ecological Plastics” or bio-plastics in specific interior areas, or approximately 30% of the interior and luggage area. The in-car entertainment system features Bluetooth, sat radio, HDD-based sat nav, voice recognition, USB and iPod connectivity, a high-contrast multi-info display, the new Lexus “Remote Touch” iDrive-like controller, a heads-up display, a class-leading 10 airbags, and a lane keep assist system which detects lane markers on the road and adds steering torque to keep the vehicle in the center of a lane.

2009 Lexus IS 250 facelift launched in Malaysia, now available in 2 variants!

Lexus IS250 Facelift

After slightly more than a year of being the niche choice of C-segment luxury sedans buyers who want to buy into the whole Lexus experience at the cheapest price point possible, the Lexus IS 250 now receives a facelift, and now comes in 2 variants – standard and luxury.

Under the hood is a 2.5 litre V6 engine featuring D4 direct injection that puts out 205hp at 6,400rpm and 252Nm of torque at 4,800rpm, giving the car a 0 to 100km/h acceleration time of 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 225km/h. The engine also has Dual VVT-i variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. This engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with enhanced lock-up clutch control in 5th and 6th gears for better fuel economy. The transmission also has an AT fluid warmer for better cold start performance.

Lexus IS250

The external changes are very subtle. The front grille receives a minor update with a restyling of the vertical bars as well as a different number of bars. The front lip of the bumper is also now integrated for a smoother experience. The front bumper has been extended by 10mm which gives the profile a sleeper look. Side mirrors now feature turn indicators, which were previously on the front fenders on the pre-facelift car. On the rear, the bumper now has a blacked out area to emulate the look of a diffuser. The brake lamp cluster has also had minor changes made to them.

Differences between the Lexus IS 250 and the Lexus IS 250 Luxury differ mainly in the equipment you get. The IS 250 Luxury has the option for a tilted moonroof. The IS 250 has a leather interior trim while the IS 250 Luxury gets 3 choices wood as well colour coded to the exterior colour, including Birdseye Maple which comes in either light brown or gray.

Other features that are only available on the IS 250 Luxury are electrically adjustable steering column, an electro-chromatic rearview mirror, a rain sensor for the wipers, illuminated scuff plates on the door sills, a rear window sunshade, semi-aniline leather, ventilated front seats, and a memory function for the front seat position. The 14-speaker Mark Levinson system with a 6-CD in-dash changer that is MP3/WMA capable is also only available on the IS 250 Luxury while the standard IS 250 gets a 13-speaker Lexus Premium system.

Lexus IS250

However I think the differentiation between the two models went abit too far as for such an expensive sedan, it’s sad to see the standard IS 250 getting regular headlamps while Xenon HID is only reserved for the IS 250 Luxury. The HID headlamps come with Adaptive Front Lighting, which adjusts the headlamp angle according to the roads for better illumination on winding roads.

Safety features include 4-wheel ABS, Brake Assist, EBD, airbags all-round including knee airbags and a multi-stage airbag for the driver, and VDIM which integrates brake, throttle, steering and transmission control into the stability control system.

The standard Lexus IS 250 goes for RM270,000 while the more premium Lexus IS 250 Luxury retails at RM305,000. Look after the jump for more images of the car.

Ferrari F60 2009 Formula One car officially unveiled!

Ferrari F60

The new Ferrari F60 is here, Ferrari’s new contender for the 2009 Formula One racing season, making Scuderia Ferrari the first team to unveil their 2009 race car, showing just how eager they are to wrestle the World title back from McLaren. The F60 name is a homage to Ferrari’s 60th consecutive season competing in the Formula One championship, which is basically right from the start, and is the only team to do so for each and every season.

Ferrari F60

The car looks bizarre as usual, as will all the 2009 race cars, but the car’s saving grace is its sexy red colour. The odd looks are thanks to the 2009 regulations on aerodynamics. We can spot the 2009 rules on the photos – the long front wheel, a short and high rear wing, sidepod-mounted mirrors, and slick Bridgestone tyres. What’s out of sight is the Kinetic Energy Recovery System developed together with Magneti Marelli, a refined suspension system, and a new Brembo brake system.

The large front wing has a flap that is driver-adjustable to reduce the loss of front downforce when following other cars. Hopefully this will promote overtaking.

Ferrari F60

“I am excited but also happy to take it onto the track for the first time. With all the new legislation I was expecting a different car, like 10 years ago with the huge spoilers, but I was surprised. I found the new F60 to be nice and small like an F3 car and nice-looking,” said Filipe Massa, Ferrari’s Brazilian driver.

This year’s season will begin down under at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, on the 29th of March 2009.

Look after the jump for more photos from the F60′s unveiling.

2009 Audi Sportback Concept: official details

Audi Sportback

Audi says the success of the Audi Sportback started with the Audi A3 Sportback. Sales of the 5-door wagonish model outperformed the 3-door hatchback version. They consider this a market trend so Audi wants to expand this Sportback brand with both a larger and a smaller model. We’ve previously seen the smaller model, the Audi A1 Sportback showed in concept form sometime last year. Now it’s time to take a look at the bigger car, the new Audi Sportback Concept which previews the future Audi A7 four-door.

Audi Sportback

Most of the styling elements have been derived from the A5 coupe, but the wavy shoulderline that made the A5 unique is missing. The front end has a new interpretation of Audi’s single frame grille which eliminates the vertical struts, leaving only the horizontal lines which like their counterparts on shirts make the car look wider. The outer countour of the single-frame grille is also an evolution of the one shown on the Audi A1 Sportback concept car.

Audi Sportback

The new Audi Sportback measures 4,950mm long, 1,930mm wide and 1,400mm tall, compared to the Audi A6 sedan’s 4,916mm length, 2,012mm width and 1,461mm height. So this vehicle is longer, wider but sits lower. It’s so long that it even exceeds the Audi A6 Avant’s 4,933mm length. But it is shorter than the Audi A8 SWB’s 5,051mm length. It’s quite a porker too, but understandable based on its size, weighing in at a massive 1,800kg.

Audi Sportback

Under the hood, and pretty unusual for an American debut until recently is the use of a 3.0 litre TDI V6 engine that is equipped with an AdBlue catalytic converter. AdBlue is an additive thats added to the exhaust stream to reduce harmful content in emissions. This engine makes 225 horsepower and 550Nm of torque, mated to a 7-speed S-Tronic transmission. The car also has quattro all-wheel drive to channel all that torque to four wheels effectively. The S-Tronic gearbox has a new feature in this concept car, it has transmission oil heating which helps it reach the optimum internal operating tempreature earlier for a lower level of internal friction.

Audi Sportback

More features that help it sip fuel include brake energy regeneration, low roll resistance tyres, an automatic start-stop system, and an electric power steering that only uses energy when cornering and not when the car is driven in a straight line. This helps it achieve an ECE fuel economy of 5.9 litres per 100km and 156g/km of emissions.

UAW rallies outside the Detroit Auto Show

UAWUnited Auto Workers members and supporters rallied outside the Detroit Auto Show that’s going on this week in protest against lowering their wages, which are higher than non-unionized assembly plant workers that work at foreign automakers such as Toyota.

Workers and supporters who attended the rally carried placards with slogans such as “I’m not a foreign auto worker”. They also claim that they “work damn hard for their money” and that claims that UAW workers make so much more than foreign competitors is a lie. I think these guys are confusing the whole foreign automaker workers thing. The people who work for foreign automakers also consist of Americans, it’s just that their bosses, or even their bosses’ bosses originate from another country.

Besides the point, even if they want to comparing yourselves with foreign auto workers, does being American have any advantages when it comes to a blue collar worker putting together cars? Are foreign auto workers somehow less adept at doing this and thus deserve to be paid less? Do they deserve less, and you deserve more, simply because you are not “foreign”? If you are so valuable, why are you working on a production line?

They say they love GM as much as everyone else but in September 2007, a year where GM lost an average of US$3.2 billion a month, the UAW launched a massive strike which left 80 GM plants having to shut down, just because GM had failed to meet the UAW’s job security demands during a negotiation. “No one wants to see GM go down the tubes. But we have to keep our standard of living, and GM is going to have to cooperate,” said UAW picketer Jim Brown.

As for the wages, let’s look at some figures.

Wage Comparison Chart
Source

Some claim the average UAW worker earns only US$28.12 an hour on average (GM reported US$39.68 an hour), but plenty of other costs such as healthcare and retirement benefits push this figure all the way up to US$70 an hour! These benefits include hospital and drug benefits, dental and vision benefits, group life insurance, disability benefits, supplemental unemployment benefits, pension payments during retirement, unemployment compensation and payroll taxes. Chrysler reports a massive US$20 an hour in health benefit costs alone! In 2006, GM paid US$4.9 billion to 291,000 retirees, which ends up being US$31.04 an hour when you divide that sum among current active and working UAW workers.

In 2007, the UAW has already agreed to slash wages (not by a margin that’s enough it seems) and benefits for NEW workers, but the retirees continue going on happily with their massive benefits. Frankly when you look at the numbers it appears that everyone but the people working in the factories are sucking Detroit dry, and the current workers are having to pay for it with pay and benefit cuts! But still, the costs have to go down.

“Why should it always be a race to the bottom? The union has been fighting for these things since the ’30s. Now the senators (from the Southern states) want us to make what the workers make for the Japanese companies. Why wouldn’t they want to raise their salaries instead of lowering ours?,” says UAW representative Mike Bartnick.

A union cannot continually go on forcing an artificially high labor rate when the rest of the world works on an open market. The costs and prices of competitors’ products will continue to drop, and to remain competitive, if labor costs cannot go down, the cuts will have to be made elsewhere, such as R&D (technology) and quality. And that’s what brought GM and Chrysler to where they are today.

Nikkei: Mitsubishi to supply 10,000 electric cars a year to PSA Peugeot Citroen?

Peugeot Electric Car
Click for enlarged image

We first heard of a joint study between Mitsubishi and PSA Peugeot Citroen to evaluate a potential cooperation between the two companies on the supply of electric vehicles back in June 2008. The study also included evaluating the feasibility of shared production sites for producing components for electric vehicles.

Japanese newspaper The Nikkei (the same guys who reported the Suzuki Kizashi would be axed) now reports that the deal went through and Mitsubishi will supply the French company up to 10,000 electric cars a year by the year 2011. This could include the Mitsubishi i MiEV, which is shown above as an artist’s impression with Peugeot styling (look after the jump for a Citroen version).

PSA would benefit by getting electric car technology fast, while Mitsubishi would benefit from PSA’s vast distributor network in Europe, which would be beneficial for Mitsu’s coffers anyway since they are the supplier, despite the cars not having Mitsubishi badges.

W212 Mercedes-Benz E-Class: new rear-end styled by Theophilus Chin

Original W212
The original W212 rear-end

Original W212
Theophilus Chin’s take on the W212′s rear end

The new W212 E-Class looks pretty good – it has a strong and athletic poise especially when equipped with the AMG bumper, but for alot of people these good vibes end when they have a look at the rear, which kind of gives me the feeling their designers ran out of ideas and swiped the rear lights of the B-Class and just slapped it in. I personally think something like a cross between the new W204 C-Class and the now old W211′s rear end would look better. Theophilus Chin got to work straight away and whipped something up, and here is the result. What do you think?
