Proton clarifies choice of Proton Exora name

Proton Exora

Proton has issued a response to the public outcry of alleged unfairness in the results of the Proton MPV naming competition. The dissatisfaction is mostly related to the chosen name “Proton Exora”, which its MD Datuk Syed Zainal said was based on the Ixora flower name at the launch event. According to Syed Zainal, “Exora is a flower that blooms in a bunch, so that evokes the spirit of the MPV, which is togetherness. It demonstrates the MPV as a family vehicle and that is why we decided to pick the name.”

In Proton’s statement, it thanked members of the public for highlighting the issues and concerns related to the choice of name and understands the points being made. It clarified that the name “Proton Exora” was picked through a vigorous selection process and was chosen because it was not a name for any animal and vegetation although it had similar pronunciation as the flower, Ixora. In fact, there were 139 contest entries submitting the name Proton Ixora, and 39 entries for Proton Exora. The Ixora name was eliminated from the final selection because it was the direct spelling of the name of a flower.

The 39 people who had submitted the winning name had also chosen the name for various other reasons. The winning entry by Miss Norsholihan Bt Abdul Eanich was chosen because of the tagline “Keriangan Keluarga” or family joy. Proton felt the name and tagline represented the company’s effort to offer a vehicle which could offer family togetherness.

The controversial rule in the naming competition stated that an entry “tidak diambil daripada” the name of flora or fauna, but it appears that Proton and contestants had different interpretations of this rule. A lot of contestants who are dissatisfied right now assumed it meant any name related to flora and fauna were disallowed, however Proton’s interpretation was only a direct name of a flora or fauna is disallowed.

What’s done is done and nothing can be changed, but reflecting on the situation, what Proton should have done at the very beginning is clarify what exactly “tidak diambil daripada” meant by giving examples, because in my honest opinion it is obvious to me that Exora is “taken from/diambil daripada” the word Ixora and contestants have every right to be dissatisfied because perhaps if they had known variations or puns on flora/fauna are allowed, they could have let their creativity loose even more and may have come up with an even better name and tagline than Proton Exora.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe (C207) replaces the CLK-Class

W212 E-Class Coupe

The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe replaces the now discontinued CLK-Class in the Mercedes-Benz line-up, but carries over traditional CLK features such as a side window profile that lacks the distraction of a B-pillar with both front and rear retractable windows, as well as styling derived mostly from the E-Class Sedan.

At launch time, 5 engine variants have been announced – the E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupe, the E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupe, the E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupe, the E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupe, and finally the E500 Coupe. That’s alot of caps in one sentence, thanks to Mercedes-Benz’s tendency to capitalise alot of the brands that it gives its cars’ technical features. All of the engines meet Euro 5 emissions standards.

W212 E-Class Coupe

One of the more popular engines in Europe will undoubtedly be the E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY. It’s powered by a twin-turbodiesel engine producing 204hp and 500Nm of torque between 1,600 to 1,800rpm. Combined NFDC fuel consumption is rated at a fuel-sipping 5.3 litres per 100km. A more powerful turbodiesel is the E 350 CDI, producing 231hp and 540Nm of torque between 1,600 to 2,400rpm.

The petrol models include a baseline 1.8 litre turbocharged E 250 CGI model, producing 204hp and 310Nm of torque between 2,000 to 4,3000rpm. The V6-powered E 350 CGI produces 292hp and 365Nm of torque between 3,000 to 5,1000rpm, while the top of the range most powerful E Coupe (save for AMG models) will be the V8-powered E 500 with its 388hp and 530Nm of torque between 2,800 to 4,800rpm.

Mercedes-Benz has equipped the E-Class Coupe with ATTENTION ASSIST. This system evaluates more than 70 different parameters to determine driver drowsiness and kicks in a warning before the microsleep phase begins. One of the parameters are steering behaviour. Mercedes-Benz engineers found that drowsy drivers make very minor steering errors that they often correct very rapidly in a certain characteristic way. A steering angle sensor can sense this.

An Active Bonnet feature improves pedestrian crash safety performance by using a spring to raise the rear section of a bonnet by 50mm within a fraction of as second to increase the amount of deformation space for the pedestrian. Active Bonnet has a driver-reversible mechanism which allows the driver to reset the system and retract the bonnet without visiting a workshop.

Three trim levels are available – ELEGANCE, AVANTGARDE and AMG Sports. The AMG Sports package builds on the AVANTGARDE level by adding a black interior on the inside and AMG bodystyling on the outside including new bumpers, side skirts and 18 inch AMG wheels in a 6 twin-spoke design, wrapped with 235/40R18 tyres at the front and 255/35R18 tyres at the rear.

The following are the launch prices for the E Coupe in Germany:

Mercedes-Benz E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupé – 44,684.50 Euro
Mercedes-Benz E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupé – 48,671.00 Euro
Mercedes-Benz E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupé – 44,684.50 Euro
Mercedes-Benz E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupé – 51,408.00 Euro
Mercedes-Benz E 500 Coupé – 66,045.00 Euro

New Fiat 500C with sliding soft roof

Fiat 500C

Fiat will be showing the new Fiat 500C at the Geneva Motorshow next month but has released this preview of its now topless cute little number ahead of the show. Unlike the MINI Convertible which is a full-blown cabriolet, the Fiat 500C instead uses a sliding soft top design, which means only the canvas roof slides down, while other roof structures such as the top rail and B and C pillars remain.

This ensures the 500C retains all-round protection even with the top down. Unfortunately from the shot above it looks like rear visibility for the 500C is pretty bad when the top is down as the folded roof is in the way, but there is a rear glass window for when the roof is up.

The Fiat 500C has the exact same dimensions as the base model – 3550mm x 1650mm x 1490 mm and uses the same trio of powerplants. First up is a 1.3 litre 75 hp MultiJet Turbodiesel mated to a 5-speed manual while the petrol units are a 1.2 litre and a 1.4 litre with 69hp and 100hp respectively. The Fiat 500C also gets the recently announced Start & Stop system which shuts down the engine and reignites it automatically according to usage in slow speed traffic.

Look after the jump for a few more photos of the 500C.

Proton Exora: the MPV Proton will launch!

Proton Exora

Proton has announced the name for the new Proton MPV – the Proton Exora! The Exora is based on the name of the Ixora flower, with the tagline “Keriangan Keluarga”. The name and tagline were picked by the Name The Proton MPV competition grand prize winner Norsholihan Bt Abdul Eanich, who will get to drive and own the 7-seater people mover she helped name once it is launched in April.

The company also revealed that the Proton Exora MPV will be priced at under RM 80,000 and will be available in 5 colours – Genetic Silver, Tranquility Black, Blue Haze, Pyrite Brown and Gaia Blue. In terms of safety, all variants will have at least 2 SRS airbags as standard, but this will be as far as it will go in terms of total airbag count. The Proton Exora will be built in the Shah Alam plant. Cost of development was slightly over RM 450 million.

Proton will produce between 3,000 to 3,500 units of the Proton Exora a month initially. After the local launch in April, the MPV will be swiftly exported to markets such as Thailand and Indonesia by July. We’ll see how the new Exora fares in an open market up with our friends up north against their favorite Toyota MPVs.

For more, please read some past coverage on the Proton Exora to find out more about the new MPV, expected to be powered by the Campro CPS engine. Bookings will be open at a fee of RM1,000 from this Saturday (21st Feb 2009) onwards.

BMW Performance Power Kit for the BMW 335i and 135i’s N54B30 3.0L twin turbo engine

BMW Performance E90

When the F01 BMW 7-Series was launched, you may have noticed that the N54B30 engine was upped from its original 306hp and 400Nm power output to new figures – 326hp at 5,800rpm and 450Nm between 1,500 to 4,500rpm. There’s more power and torque but peak torque band is now narrower, compared to the original state of tunes 1,300 to 5,000rpm range. Not that this is a real issue as I expect at least the original 400Nm in those sections of the torque curve, just that it climbs up further to a higher peak of 450Nm later and subsequently drops down earlier.

Anyway, there now is a way for 135i and 335i drivers to upgrade their 305hp engines to the new 326hp model now, via BMW Performance’s N54 Performance Power Kit upgrade. This upgrade is available for models with the 6-speed ZF auto as well as the Coupe and Convertible 3-Series models with the new 7-speed DCT dual clutch transmission. As a result, a BMW 335i with the BMW Performance Power Kit can accelerate to 100km/h by 0.2 seconds faster. It’s not just an ECU reflash as there are quite a few bits of modification needed including a second radiator, a new intake, and an uprated cooling fan. These are all to ensure the new state of tune is as reliable as the original.

No word on price yet though, and there are of course more powerful upgrades for the N54 engines by third party tuners such as Vishnu. Vishnu’s kit ups the peak torque by as much as 135Nm over the 2,000 to 4,000rpm range, resulting in 535Nm of torque together with 340 horsepower. However most of these kits don’t specify things such as additional radiators like the BMW kit does, and perhaps are not as extensively tested so there is always that nagging worry about how much it is all going to cost you when something finally goes under the extra pressure.

Not that the N54 cannot handle it of course, but you know Murphy’s law – Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong!

All-American USF1 drivers to be Scott Speed and Danica Patrick?

Scott Speed and Danica Patrick

Here’s more details on the upcoming USF1 team! It seems that Peter Windsor and Ken Anderson have confirmed that they’re up to something and were actually surprised that their plans have been under the wraps for several years now. Well, not exactly completely under the wraps, since there was talk of these guys talking to Honda sometime last year, but still, many details have only just recently surfaced.

There is now talk that the team will be making the Charlotte region its home, where the Concord $40 million Windshear race-car testing tunnel is located, and that details on the new USF1 team might surface on the 24th of February 2009. A secondary base will be located in Europe, likely in northern Spain.

As for the drivers? The rumoured duo is a male and female team comprising of American ex-Toro Rosso driver Scott Speed and everyone’s favorite race car driver turned model Danica Patrick, motorsport’s very own Maria Sharapova. Other potentials include Conor Daly, son of former F1 driver Derek Daly and Josef Newgarden.

Peter Windsor said it has not been easy raising money for the team in a recession such as this but the team will adapt to the changing times much like how FIA is adapting F1 rules. He also added that F1 is primarily an entertainment business so every aspect of USF1 will reflect that, which probably explains the extreme appeal of Danica Patrick as a driver – tons of viewers not even interested in F1 could tune in just to see her strut her self before and after the race! In fact, Ken Anderson says Danica is “great and gets alot of press”.

Facelifted Peugeot 407 now available in Malaysia!

Peugeot 407
Click for enlarged image

Shortly after its introduction in locally assembled form here in Malaysia, Nasim Peugeot Sdn Bhd has announced the availability of the new facelifted Peugeot 407, also in locally assembled form. No updates in the engine department and the equipment level (7 airbags, and various different levels of trim for the standard Classic and hi-spec Premium version, etc) as compared to the pre-facelift locally assembled 407, but there are a few aesthetics changes on the exterior and interior.

First up is a new chrome grille at the front featuring both vertical and horizontal stripes. At the rear, look hard and you’ll spot a small spoiler integrated into the rear bootlid. The rear bumper has also had some changes to the design. On the interior, the center console area now gets a classy piano black finish. The multi-info display has been relocated into the updated Multimedia and Navigation Screen system. At the front, the 407 also gains front parking sensors. A recap on what’s in the engine bay – its 2.0 litre inline-4 engine puts out 140hp at 6,000rpm and 200Nm of torque at 4,000rpm, which is improved over the old fully imported Cycle & Carriage car as it has variable valve timing.

As with the previous edition, the new 407 facelift also comes in 2 variants – Classic and Premium which retail for RM128,888 and RM136,888 respectively. Both versions are rather hi-spec, with the difference with between the two versions being the leather interior and the Multimedia and Navigation Screen system. Despite the latter being omitted in the Classic, it still comes with the premium 10-speaker JBL sound system. All prices are inclusive of insurance and a 3-year or 100,000 km warranty.

F10 BMW 5-Series Sedan Artist’s Impression

F10 BMW 5-Series
Click for enlarged image

BMW’s recently unveiled BMW Concept 5-Series Gran Turismo previews an upcoming third variant of the 5-Series family, but also serves as an early glimpse of the design language that the Sedan and Estate models of the same family will share. Resident photoshop artist Theophilus Chin whipped up these artist’s impressions so we can have a preview of how the new F10 5-Series will look like. The new 5 is expected to share the new 7′s engine line-up, which means at least a 530d, a 540i and a 550i for the top end models. Markets with a penchant for smaller and more fuel efficient engines will likely receive the 523i, 525i, and 530i models, just like the current E60. The new M5 will be powered by a stronger version of the 4.4 litre twin turbo engine in the 550i.

Look after the jump for two more angles of the car.

GM cancels right hand drive Chevrolet Camaro

Chevrolet Camaro

If you’ve got loads of cash and really want to drive a Chevrolet Camaro in Malaysia with the help of your friendly neighbourhood parallel importer, you’ll have to sit on the left side of the car, as GM has just announced that it will be scrapping plans to reengineer the car for right hand drive to help preserve cash. However it seems that Chevrolet will still be selling the Camaro in the UK as a LHD car in a RHD country, but only in limited units of less than 100 in order not to trigger type approval regulations.
