Proton Exora Prototype Test Drive Experience!

Proton Exora

It was a day of many firsts for me, the day Proton corporate communications invited some of us to test drive a prototype of the new Proton Exora MPV. Yup, we got to drive a pair of Exoras, both the same colour but taped up in the typical black disguise that you’ve seen countless of times on the spyshots featured on this site.

We drove 2 prototype units, one with a manual transmission and one with an automatic transmission, from Proton’s plant in Shah Alam along the KESAS highway, then onto the MRR2, Karak Highway, and then the East Coast Expressway, where we made a U-turn at the Lanchang exit and on back to the Proton plant (we stopped at Karak town for awhile). The first half of my journey was in the manual model while the 2nd half was in the automatic model.

Look after the jump for my experiencing with the Proton Exora, as well as some other information gathered from our session with the engineers.

Diesel power for the MINI John Cooper Works

A MINI engineer has revealed to AutoExpress via an interview that the auto maker is considering to produce a diesel-powered variant of the high performance MINI John Cooper Works and we can expect a launch date sometime in 2010. The engineer also revealed that the diesel powered version would actually be more powerful than the current petrol powered variant, and not only in terms of torque figures.

The hot hatch will most probably be called the Cooper D JCW and and will feature a 1.6L turbo-diesel. Recently, the BMW-owned brand revealed the drop-top version of the MINI John Cooper Works which is also powered by the same turbocharged 1.6 litre engine found in the hatchback that is good for 211HP and 290Nm of torque.

Samsung released sketches of its eMX Concept

Korean-based electronics giant Samsung has released design sketches of its eMX Concept which is set to be previewed at the upcoming Seoul Motor Show which will take place in April. Some of you might find this as a surprise but Samsung has had an automotive division since the mid-90’s, and sometime in 2000, Renault purchased 70% (now already 80%) of the division back in 2000, forming Renault-Samsung Motors.

The eMX, or also known as the eco-motoring experience concept is said to preview the upcoming 2010 Samsung SM3 sedan. Engine wise, the concept is expected to feature a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine, while the outgoing Samsung SM3 which is based on the Nissan Bluebird Sylphy is powered by a normally aspirated 136HP 2.0 litre engine. Renault-Samsung Motors may even drop in a 205HP 2.0 litre turbo found in the Renault Laguna GT that is also good for 300Nm of torque.

The sketches indicate that the Samsung eMX Concept is almost production ready, with a rather good looking design, especially with the aggressive front end. I can’t wait to look at images of the actual concept! Please continue reading to view another sketch.

Proton Satria Neo Super 2000 enters the IRC

MEM Satria Neo

The Proton Satria Neo Super 2000 rally car will be entering the Intercontinental Rally Challenge full-time after its first competition debut late last year. Proton will be the 7th manufacturer in the IRC series, joining the likes of Abarth, Honda, Mitsubishi, Peugeot, Skoda and Volkswagen.

“We are absolutely delighted to welcome Proton into the IRC family. The new Satria Neo S2000 has already attracted a lot of praise in its short career to date. I have no doubt that Proton will quickly find success with competitive rally customers on IRC events, as well as on national and regional championships that are based on S2000 technical regulations,” said IRC GM Marcello Lotti.

“The IRC provides the ideal format for manufacturers to showcase their products around the world. We are very excited to register for the IRC this year, alongside many of the leading manufacturers in motorsport. Although we are still developing the Proton, the IRC will provide the perfect opportunity to gauge the competitiveness of the car, and ultimately to take the project forward,” said Proton’s MD Datuk Syed Zainal.

The Satria Neo S2000 made its first rally debut piloted by Bryan Bouffier and co-driver Xavier Panseri in the Rallye Antibes Cote d’Azur leg of the 2008 European Rally Championship in the South of France. In full rally trim, the hatch has the smallest front and the lowest roof height (heh I am not surprised really) of any homologated S2000 car. It’s 2.0 litre engine is derived from Renault’s 1.8 litre unit from the Waja 1.8X and puts out 278 horsepower at 7,600rpm.

The Neo is no doubt one of the most “visible” Proton cars internationally, at least in terms of how much appearances it makes here and there. The Neo is even used in Top Gear Australia as the car used in the “Star in a Bog Standard Car” segment.

UK: Porsche Panamera S to start from £77,269

Porsche Panamera

Porsche has released confirmed pricing for the Porsche Panamera grand tourer in the UK. The Panamera will start from £72,266 (RM 397,160) for the Panamera S, going up to £77,269 for the Panamera 4S and £95,298 for the top of the range Panamera Turbo.

The baseline Panamera S comes with a 6-speed manual and rear wheel drive as standard, and can be upgraded to a 7-speed PDK dual clutch gearbox for £2,289. The 4S and Turbo has an active all-wheel drive system with Porsche Traction Management (PTM) and features the PDK gearbox as standard.

The all-wheel drive does help with traction especially to get all the power down properly from a standing start, since 0 to 100km/h in the 4S takes only 5 seconds compared to 5.4 seconds on the S model, both with the PDK gearbox.

The Panamera is exclusively V8 at the moment with both normally aspirated versions and a top of the line turbo version, but who is to say a Panamera S Hybrid with the same hyrbid powertrain of a 3.0 supercharged V6 TSI mated to an electric motor from the Cayenne S Hybrid won’t appear later?

Stuttgart reveals more details on the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Gullwing

For the first time in 40 years, Mercedes Benz’s performance division, AMG is presenting its first vehicle developed in-house, the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Gullwing. The auto maker has released some official details regarding the super car, including the fact that this performance car with “gullwing” styled doors is powered by a front-mid mounted M159 AMG 6.3 litre V8 with dry sump lubrication that is good for 571HP at 6,800 rpm.

This naturally aspirated power plant also produces 650Nm of torque at 4,750 rpm, which enables the SLS AMG to propel to the 100 km/h mark in 3.8 seconds and to a top speed of 315 km/h.

With its fuel consumption rated at 13 litres per 100 kilometers, the super car conforms to current and future exhaust emission standards including EU 5, LEV 2 and ULEV. The AMG engine which has a kerb weight of 206 kilograms drives the rear wheels via a carbon-fiber drive shaft that is carried over from the DTM C Class racer, and is coupled with a rear-mounted 7 speed dual clutch transmission.

With aluminium used for the construction of its chassis and body, the SLS AMG features a power-to-weight ratio of 2.84 kilograms per horse power thanks to its 1,620 kerb weight, excluding the driver.

Other features include four driving modes ranging from comfortable to extremely sporty, 3-Stage ESP that includes “ESP ON”, “ESP SPORT” and “ESP OFF”, AMG high-performance composite brakes all-round and weight-optimized AMG light-alloy wheels. The Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Gullwing is expected to be launched in spring 2010, with an estimated price tag of 140,000 Euros. Continue reading to view more official images of the prototype.

Great Wall Wingle spotted again on test!

Great Wall Wingle

Volkswagen MagellanHere’s another shot of the Great Wall Wingle being tested in Malaysia, this time snapped in Genting by reader Mior. This time there’s a very clear front shot of the car, featuring a design that was clearly “inspired” from the Volkswagen Magellan Concept (shown left). I have no idea when this is scheduled to launch, but from what I am aware of, it uses a Bosch-developed 2.8 litre turbodiesel engine putting out 95 horsepower and 225Nm from 1,600rpm. Having it appear so often doesn’t really mean anything especially with a Chinese marque as there is a precedent somewhat set by the ChangAn CM8, which was also spotted over a year before it was actually launched. In case you’re wondering what’s with the odd name, Wingle is actually said to be a combination of Wind and Eagle.

More details of the Jaguar XE revealed

Jaguar LogoWe now have more details regarding the Jaguar XE sports car courtesy of Motor Trend, which is set to take on the Porsche 911. To be based on Jaguar’s flexible architecture, the Jaguar XE will be larger than the Jaguar XF and this new sports car will revive the long-canceled Jaguar F-Type project.

A key executive from the TATA also mentioned that Jaguar needs something fresh and new, and that innovation and development is the key for Jaguar’s survival, which is why the auto maker is looking into producing the XE.

A number of engine choices would be available including a 385HP naturally aspirated 5.0 litre AJ-V8, a supercharged version of the 5.0 litre V8 that could pump out 510HP as well as a 272HP 3.0 litre diesel V6 what should also produce 600Nm of torque. With the supercharged 5.0 litre V8, the XE would be able sprint to 100 km/h in 4.0 seconds while equipped with the 3.0 litre diesel V6, the sports car would be able to do it slightly under 6.0 seconds.

We are expecting the Jaguar XE which will also take on Aston Martin’s V8 Vantage to make an appearance at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, along with the 50th anniversary celebration of the Jaguar E-Type.

More information on the new Bentley Continental and Bentley Arnage: Audi to drop in a few components

Thanks to Bentley’s marriage to Audi, a number of components from the German auto maker including diesel power plants will make way into Bentley’s vehicles across the Atlantic. First up, with the new Continental, a number of components including the entire front suspension system will be carried over from the Audi A8.

With Dirk van Braeckel working on the design, the new Continental would also be powered by a diesel power plant that would be good for 374HP, apart from a number of petrol powered W12 engines such as a 580HP unit and a 650HP unit. The new Continental is expected to arrive in sometime in 2011.

The Arnage on the other hand is expected to feature a V12 turbo-diesel carried over from the Audi Q7 TDI which is good for 500HP and an awesome 1000Nm of torque! I must say, that this marriage is a match made in heaven!
