Skoda postpones ASEAN plans, prefer to wait it out

Skoda Fabia

Volkswagen’s Skoda marque had planned to enter the ASEAN market sometime soon but has postponed its plans and instead plans to play a waiting game to see through the current crisis. Skoda chairman Reinhard Jung says the downturn will force a consolidation process in the region and the market will need at least a year to correct itself before it can be seen which players will remain in the game.

Skoda could likely enter the ASEAN region via the FTA between ASEAN and India, which some companies like Hyundai Sime Darby have already taken advantage of. The Hyundai i10 that we get here is locally assembled via CKD packs from India. Skoda and Volkswagen just opened a plant in Pune with a capacity of 110,000 vehicles a year.

Malaysia already has a Skoda distributor, Quasar Carriage’s AutoPraha Sdn Bhd under the Berjaya Group. Read our old Skoda Fabia 1.4 Test Drive Review from 2006. That particular unit has been replaced by a new Fabia (shown above) now of course, which will also be built at VW’s Pune plant.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk6 – full details unveiled!

Golf GTI

Volkswagen has unveiled the production version of the Mk6 Volkswagen Golf GTI and some journalists have already managed to have a go at it at the international driving presentation in Saint-Tropez, France. This blog has no such luck so we’ll just have a look at the details while we wait for the Mk6 to reach our shores and then perhaps we can have a go, like we did with the Mk5 Golf GTI. For now you’ll have to wait for write-ups in the local magazines, and read my write-up after the jump.

BYD M6: Estima inspired Chinese MPV

BYD M6

BYD cars have always been curiously similiar to Toyotas, for example the BYD F3 is clearly inspired from the previous generation Corolla Altis and it is sometimes referred to as the poor man’s Corolla Hybrid, since it recently was made available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain (BYD F3 DM). But erm of course there is also the BYD F8 which looks like a shrunk-down R230 pre-facelift SL convertible.

Mind you, this is a company that Warren Buffet has invested in! This new BYD M6 MPV is inspired from one of the most popular MPVs out there, the Toyota Estima. The M6 is BYD’s first MPV and it’s quite a large one, measuring 4,600mm x 1,760mm x 1,490mm with a 2,950mm wheelbase.

Under the hood will be a choice of BYD’s own 2.0 litre engine from the BYD483 series good for 138 horsepower 6,000rpm and 186Nm of torque between 4,000 to 4,500rpm, or a Mitsubishi 4G69 2.4 litre unit producing 162 horsepower between 5,000 to 6,000rpm and 220Nm of torque between 3500 to 4500rpm.

The MPV, while in its essence a boring people mover vehicle, has quite a high percentage of decent-looking models compared to ugly ones out there which means it is surprisingly easy to style and make good-looking.

Look after the jump for some sketches of the BYD M6. More details to come later when the BYD is launched, then hopefully we’ll get some interior photos.

Dongfeng Fengshen
Dongfeng Fengshen

Dongfeng does Kia, Nissan, PSA Peugeot Citroen and Honda in China, but they have been recently focusing on developing their own brand as well. This is the Dongfeng Aeolus Fengshen sedan, and if you’re wondering if it’s basically an old recycled PSA or Honda chassis with a new skin, you’re right. Underneath all the metal is the old Citroen ZX, with power coming from a 105 horsepower 16 valve 1.6 litre PSA engine. The Fengshen is 4,502mm long, 1,740mm wide and 1,465mm tall with a 2,610mm wheelbase. The Fengshen will debut at the 2009 Shanghai Auto Show this April.

BMW 1-Series Line-up Digital Plastic Surgery

1-Series

In this latest generation of BMW cars, we are seeing many of the “experimentation” in design removed to revert to something a little more conservative.

One obvious example is the difference between the E65 and the F01, and the addressing of several common complaints with the E90′s design. I feel the most of the lines and curves of the 1-Series look very good, except somehow they just had to add an odd sagging line at the bottom.

Then I remembered we have Theophilus Chin and his magical Photoshop, and the result is what you see above. The 1-Series really looks so much better without that sagging line!

But of course, the 1-Series was first introduced in 2004 and the hatchback was already facelifted in 2007. But the 1-Series coupe was only introduced recently and is actually a full half generation behind the hatchback, so I wonder if the coupe will be “facelifted” in 2010 to “fix” this.

Look after the jump for more 1-Series digital plastic surgery!

Mitsubishi Motors to restructure European business

Mitsubishi i MiEV

Mitsubishi has proposed a new business model for its business in Europe, with both product offering and management structure changes to reflect the new way it is taking forward. They want to switch from a mainly SUV nameplate in Europe to one focused on environmentally friendly passenger cars and crossovers. This will probably begin with the Mitsubishi i MiEV (shown above), which will also be sold in Europe by PSA.

Design & Engineering functions will be located to a central hiub in Japan, shifting its product planning strategy from one that is regional-based to a new global car strategy. It’s also proposed that all vehicle-related functions such as Sales, Marketing, Product Management, Business Planning, etc be relocated back to Japan.

Support functions like logistics, planning, ordering, finance and HR would remain in Europe but will be trimmed to be leaner. Aftersales functions including sales and marketing of parts and accessories, technical services and training would be moved to MMC’s European Parts Distribution Centre in The Netherlands.

W212 E63 AMG set for New York debut

E63 AMG

There’s one very easy way to tell the real stuff from the aesthetic replicas when it comes to AMG and M cars. Just check out those huge brakes in the photo above! The W212′s E63 AMG is expected to have a 6.3 litre normally aspirated V8 under the hood, churning out 525 horsepower and 630Nm of torque. The basis of this “prediction” by many publications out there are because it is similiar figures to the SL 63 AMG. It may also get the AMG Speedshift MCT transmission, a planetary transmission automatic gearbox but with the torque converter replaced with a startup clutch. The latest AMG car from Stuttgart is expected to be unveiled at the 2009 New York International Auto Show.

Lamborghini axes its 4-door Estoque?

Lamborghini Estoque

Rumor has it that Italian sports car maker has decided to discontinue its plans to produce the Estoque, which is 4-door super sedan project, and we not sure if its a permanent shut down or a temporary one. Just like many other axed projects, the speculated shut down of the production Estoque project is linked to the uncertain world economy, leaving the sports car maker to concentrate on both the Gallardo and Murcielago models.

Apparently, Lamborghini also revealed that it will continue to use its e-gear automated manual transmission, instead of switching to a dual clutch setup, and that its customers prefer the “gutsy” e-gear transmission over a “smoother” dual clutch transmission. We will update you as soon as we get a confirmation from the auto maker itself. Meanwhile please click here to learn more about the Lamborghini Estoque.

RON95 petrol and Euro 2M grade diesel all set for Sept 1st 2009 introduction in Malaysia

Fuel Wallet GaugeIt was previously announced that RON97 petrol would have its price increased (the plan was originally to float) in July 2009 to make way for a cheaper RON95 grade fuel replacing RON92 at the original RON92 prices.

This July deadline could have been pushed back as Datuk Shahrir Samad has now announced that RON95 fuel will be available from September 1st 2009 onwards, so changes to RON97 (if any) would also likely be pushed back to coincide with the date. You can’t have a two month period of having a higher priced RON97 but with no RON95 as an alternative can you? Datuk Shahrir also revealed that the higher grade Euro 2M diesel will be introduced on the same date to replace the current grade of diesel and will be priced the same as the outgoing fuel.

In related news, the RM625 cash rebate exercise that was supposed to end on the 31st this month has been extended to the 14th of April 2009 to give people who qualify but have not claimed their rebate yet time to claim it. Just a refresher – the rebate is for vehicles with engines 2,000cc and below, and for pickups and trucks with engines 2,500cc and below. Motorcycles 250cc and below are eligible to RM150.

There has been alot of news, flip flops and other announced “decisions” made leading up to this latest announcement, so please read the previous related posts linked below:
