2020 Hyundai City Car Concept

Nicolas Stone, a recent graduate from the College of Creative Studies has designed the concept you see above, dubbed as the 2020 City Car Concept with the help of Korean-based auto maker, Hyundai.

Featuring a naturalist theme, the futuristic 2020 Hyundai City Car Concept seems to feature a front end that looks a little like the Mitsubishi i MiEV.

The “green” theme can also be seen in the airy interior, with a design that mimics “leaves growing off a stem”. Electricity is obtained via transparent solar panels mounted on the car that will then channel electricity into a water tank to split hydrogen molecules from oxygen molecules (Hydroxene anyone?). Just like a plant, the eco-friendly car uses stored hydrogen to power to vehicle while oxygen is released into the atmosphere (this is the plant part). This method is in fact called “artificial photosynthesis”.

Toyota rumored to produce a hybrid coupe

Words are being exchanged in the motoring fraternity that Japanese-based auto maker, Toyota is planning to produce a hybrid coupe, which will share the same powertrain as the Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle. The hybrid is said to carry over certain design cues from the Toyota FT-HS Concept which was previewed at Detroit 2007.

According to Auto Express, Toyota will dub the hybrid coupe as the MR2, and that the environmentally friendly compact coupe will feature a rear wheel drive setup with a paddle shift transmission. The British-based magazine also revealed that Toyota’s executive vice president Masatami Takimoto mentioned that the auto maker understands that people in the U.K and Europe are very fond of the MR2, and the company is developing small hybrid sports car.

The coupe is expected to also offer excellent handling characteristics with improved aerodynamic efficiency and if it goes into production, we can expect a price point that would hover over the GBP 20,000 figure. It is also speculated that the hybrid coupe would be able to hit the 100 km/h mark in 7 seconds, while returning an impressive 60 miles to the gallon. Stay tuned as we will bring you the latest updates!

2010 British Motor Show canceled

Reports have emerged that the 2010 British Motor Show has been canceled due to poor attendance and a struggling economy. The decision was made during a meeting of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, which has been the organizer of the motor show for the past century.

At one point, the motor show attracted up to 900,000 visitors, but recently held shows featured only half of that figure. Looking at the downward trend, there is a good possibility that the entire show might be canceled all together. Even the recently held motor show in Detroit saw reduced participation from auto manufacturers while the Tokyo Motor Show also has a rather bleak future. Down south, the 2009 Sydney Motor Show has also been canceled.

Future BMW M3 to drop V8 for a turbo 6 pot

Words are being exchanged that BMW’s in-house performance tuner, M GmbH, will most probably let the 4.0 litre V8 from the current M3 lose, to make way for a turbocharged 6 cylinder engine to power next M3, although the cylinder arrangement of the new engine is unknown, meaning it can either be arranged to form an inline 6 or a V6. An inline 6 may prove to be lighter, but V6 is more space friendly.

The next powerplant would be completely new, and not just an updated version of the current 3.0 litre 6 cylinder engine found in the 335i and 135i. An executive from BMW also commented that new engine may not even produce as much horsepower as the current 4.0 litre V8, but the key is to achieve high a power to weight ratio, with lightweight design implemented into the construction of the engine and the body structure.

The usage of a V6 configuration is currently being debated internally as according to BMW M president Ludwig Willisch, a V configuration would allow a more compact installation compared to an inline-6. It looks like BMW is beginning to abandon all that it used to be famous for in favor for things that make more sense.

First went the pure normally aspirated line-up, then soon even the M models will go turbo, beginning with the X5 M and X6 M. If the new M3 ends up having a V6, you can expect the V6 to trickle down the product line replacing the I6 engines. What next, a switch to front wheel drive? Probably not until another competitor does so, but it would be a sad day for RWD purists!

The next high performance 1 Series, on the other hand, will most probably feature a twin-turbocharged 4 cylinder motor. This high performance 1-Series that will not feature the M designation will be positioned as a baby M3, and will offer what the classic E30 M3 offered during its time, which is a cracking motor in a small body.

BMW Malaysia introduces BMW TeleServices!

BMW LogoBMW Malaysia is taking its customer ownership experience to the next level with the introduction of BMW TeleServices, now available with any BMW vehicle from BMW Malaysia that is equipped with Bluetooth and the BMW Navigation Professional System.

TeleServices is part of the BMW ConnectedDrive suite of services, and is related to the maintenance of your car. When a service is due as determined by BMW’s Condition Based Server on-board system, the car will communicate with the BMW TeleServices server via the mobile phone network and relay this service information. Your dealer/service center will then call you up to arrange an appointment for you to bring your car in for service at your convenience.

It’s not just oil changes – CBS sensors can detect worn parts such as brake discs and pads and etc. The service job – if not something complicated like some major part broken – should be quick and fast as the CBS system will also inform BMW of what parts needs to be ready at the service center, so everything will be ready for service work to begin with minimal diagnostic and logistics delay.

Other parts of ConnectedDrive including BMW Assist and BMW Online internet access are currently under discussion/development with some local partners in Malaysia and will be rolled out when the infrastructure is ready. These are just some of the perks of buying your BMW from BMW Malaysia instead of a grey importer.

As it is, only half of the BMWs registered in Malaysia every month are from official dealers, the rest are grey imports. So BMW Malaysia is quite aggressive in trying to convert these grey import lovers, even if they are converted to BMW approved used car customers instead of brand new car customers. Services such as this are one way, and their Service Inclusive packages and attractive BMW Credit and Leasing plans are another. My advice is don’t look at the initial car price when you are considering which is the better deal, look at the bigger picture.

Look after the jump for some videos about BMW TeleServices.

Fiat Bravo GT Automatic 6-speed Duologic AMT

Fiat Bravo GT

A 2nd variant of the Bravo GT has been unveiled for the Malaysian market. Yes, we’re talking about the Fiat Bravo GT, not the other Bravo GT back from the 1990s.

This version comes with an automated manual version of the 6-speed gearbox called the Duologic gearbox instead of a proper slushbox, which means its a regular manual but with a robotised clutch to do all the shifting for you. For this, the Bravo GT manual’s RM 135,000 OTR without insurance price tag gets bumped up to RM 145,000.

The original Bravo GT manual (with 150 PS at 5,500rpm and 206Nm of torque at 2,250rpm) used to look attractive before the 308 Turbo came about, now it actually feels a little pricey considering another European turbocharged C-segment hatch is only pegged at RM 111,000 (though its CBU versus CKD), though this is expected to increase in price soon slightly, but will come with an upgraded equipment level as well.

Each has its own charms of course, but I say, it would be terrific if that extra equipment that’s coming with the 308 Turbo is the glass roof from the 308 GT as it does wonders to the cabin ambiance. Read our very short first impressions of the Bravo GT 1.4 T-JET manual from 2007 in the related link listed below.

Formula One and the economic downturn

Brawn GP

I’m sure all of you are very familiar with how the current economic climate has been a plague to the very expensive Formula One sport. It’s not just teams that have folded (and resurrected), but some of F1′s biggest sponsors such as the RBS and ING have been shying away from the sport because they want to cut costs and disassociate themselves from F1′s image of lavish spending, which is seen as irresponsible in the current times. F1-related but not direct team-related expenditure by carmakers have also been cut, for example BMW used to host a party with its own grandstand, bar and restaurant area for up to 400 clients at the Australian GP that costs it over US$630,000 a year but this year there will be no such thing.

Toyota F1 carAfter Honda left, Toyota stayed on but had its budget cut over and over and over again. It is said that if Panasonic had not signed the sponsorship deal for 2009, they would have pulled out. To hopefully prevent even more teams from falling out of the race because of cost issues, the World Motor Sport Council recently announced an optional budget cap of £30m a season from the 2010 race season onwards.

Now that figure seems like nothing, considering some teams spend over 10 times that amount! Can you imagine, an F1 car’s wheel nut might cost US$ 1,200? Teams that accept the budget cap will receive incentives such as allowing them to have more aerodynamically efficient (but standard) underbody, movable wings, and a engine that is not rev-limited or not subjected to a development freeze. Even free or sponsored items will count towards this budget. These are not finalised yet of course, and may be adjusted before 2010.

Thus you can either spend your way to victory or innovate your way to victory. There is this saying by the late David Keith Duckworth, a mechanical engineer who designed the Cosworth Double Four Valve engine (once an F1 standard): an engineer is someone who can do for one dollar what any idiot can do for a hundred dollars.

It’s not just the teams and the sports itself. Venues are taking the hit as well. In Europe, F1 fans are deciding to stay at home and watch the race instead instead of buying tickets and experiencing the race first-hand. The Belgian GP back in September last year took a big loss hit of US$4.9 million, and it only had 52,000 spectators, which is 10,000 less than 2007 figures.

SIC

And of course on our local ground, we have the Sepang International Circuit. As we all know our Malaysian income per capita is far far less than Europeans with their strong currencies, but Sepang has done a tremendous and commendable job in offering some of the cheapest F1 tickets in the world, at only US$31 per seat compared to an average of US$150 across all the Grand Prix races. That’s 5 times cheaper and very suited to Malaysian income levels, but yet the SIC is struggling, with ticket sales expected to dip by 20% this year and it does not expect to hit 36,000 international visitors this year, out of a total of 120,000 expected for the Race Day. The SIC is also offering student rates with discounts of up to 80%.

JamiroquaiThey have also been running other aggressive promotions, such as a 2 FOR 1 value buy package ahead of the race weekend of the 3rd to 5th April 2009, which is also valid for the lowest ticket price of RM100. This will admit one person to the race and to the post-race Jamiroquai concert on Sunday. It’s basically a free concert for all ticket holders. 2 for 1 means you get to watch the Race Day and also the concert at night. They want the Malaysian leg of the F1 race to be more than just a race, but sort of a day of entertainment for race-goers during the race weekend.

SIC wants to create a carnival like party. Think fast cars, men on stilts, beautiful women and loud music. The Kuala Lumpur Grand Prix City programmes will provide more fun for the fans than just the race. They are also offering a fully done-up Mazda RX8 as the grand prize for a competition for F1 ticket buyers. If you’re interested you can check out the F1 roadshow set to be held at the 1 Utama shopping center next on the 25th and 29th of March 2009.

Despite the doom and gloom and even more radical changes set for the 2010 race year, this year’s season should be interesting because of the rule changes as previously explained by Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel. Some technical changes have been made to provide more chances to overtake, which will further spice up the race. We’ll also see which teams will have good KERS implementations and how they will be used effectively. The team that gets KERS right immediately will have a big advantage.

Hyundai Grand Starex Malaysian Test Drive Review

Hyundai Grand Starex
Story by Dr. Max Long

Size does matter. Super size me. Some of the corny Hollywood movies tagline and script, right out of box office flicks, with the latter referring to upsizing of portion at fast food outlets, another one of American hegemonic foray into our societal food culture.

However, it is interesting to note that the fully-auto washing machine I paid for close to a decade ago at 13.5kg capacity is a maxed-out tumbler available only from a notable Korean appliance maker. Not from the Japanese, not even at any price at time.

I am not sure about the Americans then but they are unlikely to be competitively priced by the time brands like Maytag – of equivalent size and wash load – gets shipped to our beloved country.

And now we have this ‘Starship Enterprise’ of a people mover, van, minibus or full-size MPV or whatever you might want to call it. Hyundai themselves call it by at least 3 names. Over here it’s known as the Hyundai Grand Starex. It’s simply huge.
