James, you are right. sure there are plenty of those extreme engineering cases for very specific applications. but i was referring to practical road use for most mere mortals. :)

i wonder, if the petrol engine stays around for the next 30 years, will we be seeing 600cc engines kicking out 180bhp?!?!?!
Possible. I remember the Mercedes 300 Turbodiesel: 125hp out of 3000cc. At this time (20yrs ago) it was quite a lot.
Nowadays, a 2000cc Diesel (Audi/VW TDI) is 170hp...
I thought F1 engines have been doing that to decades! 300HP /litre is a norm in F1. In the turbo days, the engines can easily be boosted to 1000Hp/litre... although that can be done for a short time only... hehe...

well, an internal combustion engine wastes about 60% of energy. which means a comparable 600cc engine that makes 90bhp today can produce 150bhp in theory. gonna be some interesting times ahead.

paul, i was basing my assumption for the new polo gti on the fact that the current version 9n3 had the cup edition which pushed 180bhp. at 150bhp, most of the hot hatch competition would be way ahead by the time this new polo hits the market. i think VW recognizes that the golf gti is beyond the hot hatch market already. it's slowly creeping into C class territory.

droll: i'm not sure if the new polo gti will be 180 ps... this new ibiza has the 180 ps engine in the ibiza cupra. polo gti maybe 150 ps like this only because in the previous generation the polo's power was equivalent to the ibiza fr, the 1.8t 150 ps engine.

no doubt the new polo gti will have a similar configuration but with a different tune! 180bhp in a 1.4 TSI! that should be easily chippable to 200bhp??

to achieve 100hp per litre capacity is not new but the twin charge engine from Volkswagen group done it in a clean and torquey manner. The engine meets euro5 standard, fuel efficient, and at the same time providing meaty torque at all RPM range.

That is the new standard these days. The old days of revving to 8000rpm to have a taste of power is over because those engines have no torque, noisy, and not fuel efficient.
