Proton posts RM338 million FY2008/2009 loss!

ProtonProton is in the red again for the financial year 2008/2009 after a short stint of profitability for the 2007/2008 financial year. Profit of RM144 million in the previous financial year dropped to a loss of RM338 million for the financial year ended 31st March 2009.

Chairman Dato’ Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh says the results are primarily due to impairment of property, plant and equipment (PPE) and inventory write-down of certain models impacted by volume contraction, and is reflective of the current global economic condition.

He added that the second half of the financial year was dversely affected by the accelerated amortisation of certain dies and jigs as well as the increased costs of components and raw materials arising from higher foreign currency exchange rates, particularly, the Japanese Yen and the US Dollar.

He noted that despite the loss, revenue had actually improved from RM5.62 billion in FY2007/2008 to RM6.49 billion in FY2008/2009, an increase of RM864.98 million. Proton currently has a cash balance of RM899.5 million, down from RM1,173.9 million in FY2007/2008. They also expect to receive a RM81 million R&D grant through the National Automotive Policy for the financial year.

“As a fully fledged automotive company, we spent a substantial amount on the development of new models such as the Proton Exora and Lotus Evora during the year. While this had affected our cash reserves, we will be able to recover when the cars are sold,” said the group’s managing director Dato’ Haji Syed Zainal Abidin.

Dato Haji also adds that Proton intends to double their total sales volume by 2010, with the bulk of improvement coming from improvements in export market sales. The Proton Exora will be launched in Indonesia in July 2009. Proton sold 156,845 cars in FY2008/2009, up from 139,942 in FY2008/2007. Out of that amount, 16,746 or just over 10% were export cars and 2,280 were Lotus cars.

In other Proton related news, the Proton Exora is now eligible for the Proton Xchange programme effective immediately, where customers will be able to trade in their old cars with minimum lifespan of 10 years for a RM5,000 discount.

New Toyota Corolla Altis 2.0V with Dual VVT-i engine introduced in the ASEAN market!

Toyota Corolla Altis 2.0V

Toyota has added a 2.0 litre variant with sporty intentions to the Toyota Corolla Altis in Thailand and Indonesia called the 2.0V. It even has a new sportier mesh grille to complement the new more powerful engine under the hood.

Under the hood of this updated Altis is the 3ZR-FE which has Dual VVT-i which means variable valves on both the intake and exhaust. While more modern than the 1AZ-FE VVT-i found in the Camry, it’s still not the top of the range 2.0 litre from Toyota as the current crown is held by the 158 PS 3ZR-FAE with Valvematic continuous valve lift control, eliminating the need for a throttle butterfly.

The 3ZR-FE in the Altis 2.0V is tuned differently in different countries. In Indonesia it produces 152 PS at 5,600rpm and 21.2 kgm (I used a calculator and this translates to a whopping 208Nm!) of torque at 4,400rpm.

Toyota Corolla Altis 2.0V

That’s actually some pretty impressive torque figures for a 2.0 litre engine as all of its competitors only produce roughly between 190Nm to 200Nm. In Thailand and Philippines the engine is somewhat detuned, producing only 141 PS at 5,600rpm and a more sedate 189Nm of torque at 4,400rpm.

What you’ll notice immediately when it comes to transmission is the addition of paddle shifts, but there are more changes underneath. The Altis 2.0V’s gear ratios are completely different from the 1.8 litre version. The Altis 1.8 gear ratios are 2.847, 1.552, and 1.000 for the first three gears and an overdrive of 0.700 with a final drive of 4.237, but the 2.0V uses revised ratios of 3.943, 2.197, 1.413 and finally a fourth gear ratio of 1.020 with no overdrive gear. But to make up for the new ratios, the final drive has been changed to 2.923.

Volkswagen Golf Variant gets updated to Mk6

Volkswagen Golf Variant

Known has the Jetta Wagon in some other markets, the estate variant of the new Golf has been updated as per the Mk6 Golf hatchback. It’s alternate names are either the Golf Variant, or the Golf Estate. Like the rest of the Mk6 range unveiled thus far, it is largely based on the Mk5 but solves one major problem that the previous generation had – it was too expensive to build.

The Golf Variant starts from 18,500 Euros and is packed with features that can be considered high spec in Malaysia but is standard issue in the standard baseline Golf Variant as standard ESP stability control, 6 airbags, daytime running lights, roof rails, power windows all round, upshift indicator to help you optimise fuel consumption, power and heated outside mirrors, 1/3 to 2/3 split folding rear bench seat and seatback, and climate control.

Volkswagen is launching the new Golf Estate on the market with four gasoline and two diesel engine options, all complying with Euro 5, starting from 80 PS and 102 PS petrol engines, 122 and 160 PS gasoline TSI engines, and two TDI turbodiesels putting out 105 PS and 140 PS. The TSI and TDI engines may be ordered with a DSG transmission.

2009 Toyota Hiace updated in the UK market!

Toyota Hiace

The Toyota Hiace in the UK is something quite different from what we get here. The 2009 Hiace gets standard air conditioning, extra sound-proofing, an extra interior light for the load area, antiglare window glass, and some random chrome detailing around the dash. Both short wheelbase and long wheelbase versions are available, with gross vehicle weight sof 2,800kg and 3,000kg respectively. The standard engine is a 2.5 litre D4-D with either 95 or 115 bhp output.

small_toyota_hiace.jpgAnd by the way, did you know that the Hiace is the top stolen vehicle in Japan?

I can see the appeal – the stolen vans can be shipped out to countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Africa, and other third world countries that have use for a van like this.

Some businessmen in these countries are usually more than happy to look for good deals on commercial vans with extraordinarily cheap prices to save on business costs. These vans that are meant as cheap goods movers are also usually not equipped with adequate anti-theft devices because of the low equipment level specified.

It wasn’t always like that though – the Hiace was only number 9 in 2005 but climbed sharply up to 5 the next year. It eventually topped the list in 2008.

VIDEO: Ford Kinetic Design TVC

Ford Kinetic Design TVC

Ford shot this TV commercial featuring all of their new Kinetic Design cars, but despite having various locations for the scenes in reality the cars never left the shooting studio. This was done on purpose and highlighted as part of the main message delivered by the TVC – they want to say their cars look dynamic as if they are moving even when in reality they are staying still in one spot. Nothing beats having the car really out there though – in the virtualised landscape some of the lighting on the car doesn’t feel like they match properly. Watch the TVC after the jump.

Honda Fit Hybrid to arrive in autumn 2010?

Honda Fit

Japan’s Nikkei business daily reports that the Honda Fit Hybrid (Honda Jazz Hybrid) will be launched a full 18 months ahead of schedule in autumn 2010, which is about 5 quarters from now. Nikkei further added that Honda has set a target price tag of 1.5 million Japanese Yen, which translates to only about just over RM55k, and target sales of over 50,000 units annually.

That would make it Honda’s cheapest hybrid so far, with the Honda Insight starting from 1.89 million Japanese Yen while the competing Prius starts at 2.05 million Japanese Yen all the way up to 3.27 million Japanese Yen for higher spec versions. The old 2nd generation Prius is still on sale in Japan as the Prius EX, with a price tag that intentionally matches the Insight at 1.89 million Japanese Yen.

Honda’s most expensive hybrid in Japan is the Honda Civic Hybrid, which has a price tag starting from over 2.2 million Japanese Yen. As of end January 2009, Honda has sold over 300,000 Hybrid cars worldwide, with the bulk being the Civic Hybrid at over 255,000 units. Asia-Oceania (the region ASEAN and Malaysia is in) represented just 5,514 units out of that, with the most Civic Hybrids sold in US – over 191,000.

There was also an Accord Hybrid in the previous generation Accord family in the US which sold 28,471 units in the US, using a 3.0 V6 engine with variable cylinder management mated to a 14kW electric motor.

Kinetic Design: a new look for European Fords

Ford Fiesta

Ford’s new “kinetic Design” theme that it’s been putting on all of it cars started back in 2004 when Ford executive design director for Ford Europe Mr Martin Smith was tasked with formulating a new design language for the company. And it’s not just limited to Europe – the next generation Fords will strive harder to be global cars and kinetic Design has also found its way onto the American Taurus.

UK cops evaluating Jaguar XF 3.0 Diesel S

Jaguar XF
Click for enlarged image

UK police forces are currently evaluating a version of the Jaguar XF Diesel S designed to be a high-performance pursuit vehicle.

The base model is the XF 3.0 Diesel S Luxury and adds on a roof-mounted light bar with 3600 blue flashing lights and integrated side alley lights, blue and white flashing LEDs inside the front grille, side mounted blue flashing LED lights, blue and red flashing LED lights integrated in the rear lamp clusters, and a Home Office-specification electronics ‘Police pack’ to power the full suite of lights, radio and other police equipment.

The XF Diesel S is powered by a 3.0 litre turbodiesel V6. 0 to 60mph can be hit in 5.9 seconds. There are two versions of this engine available and the one in the Diesel S is a twin turbocharged “parallel-sequential” version where a small turbo is used at low revs to quickly build up boost while at high revs a bigger one takes over, much like the engines in the BMW 335d and 123d.

New Lancer Evo X FQ-400 with 525Nm of torque!

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ-400

Mitsubishi Motors UK has finally added the FQ-400 to its Lancer Evolution X range. The Lancer Evolution X FQ-400′s 2.0 litre engine puts out 403 horsepower at 6,500rpm and 525Nm of torque from just 3,500rpm, and it gets up to 100km/h in a scorching fast estimated 3.8 seconds.

So what’s changed in the engine department to allow it to produce the higher power and torque? Well firstly motorsport specification high-flow fuel injectors have been fitted, along with a new turbocharger that features low-friction bearings, a high temperature turbine and a strengthened thrust bearing to increase response and reduce turbo lag.

A better intercooler has also been fitted, and the exhaust system now has a 3 inch diameter high flow stainless steel pipe which exits in the middle of the rear bumper. The ECU has been reprogrammed to take advantage of all the new hardware and this took over 500 hours of development time.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ-400

The Evo X also has some aesthetic changes on the outside. Wheels are 18 inch 9-spoke lightweight alloys wrapped with Toyo Proxes R1R tyres. There is a new vented bonnet and a new lightweight composite front bumper with carbon fibre elements. The Bilstein shock and Eibach spring suspension’s ride height has been dropped by 30mm at the front. The rear bumper has also been restyled with a carbon fiber diffuser, and in the middle of the diffuser you will find the central exit exhaust tailpipe.

Like the previous top of the line FQ-360, the car comes with a manual as it is likely the 6-speed twin clutch SST cannot take the high torque that the FQ-400 puts out. The FQ-300 and FQ-330 have SST models though, with the FQ-330 SST only just recently added as the original line-up only specified SST on the FQ-300.

Euro NCAP Test Results for May 2009

EuroNCAP Small Car 2009

The latest round of Euro NCAP test results are out and 5 out of the 6 cars tested have scored 5 stars, causing all of the manufacturers namely Audi, Hyundai, Kia and Peugeot to be sending out press releases boasting about their 5-star rating. But beyond the 5 star rating are a few other statistics that you can look at.

The Audi Q5 was just launched here in Malaysia, and the model tested by Euro NCAP was the 2.0 TDI Steppe model in right hand drive. The Jazz was the Jazz 1.4 ES left hand drive, the i20 was the 1.4 GL left hand drive and the Soul was the 1.6 EX left hand drive. The Pug was the 3008 1.6HDi also in left hand drive.

Honda Jazz

All of the cars scored pretty well in the adult and child safety area as well as the safety assist points but only the i20 and Jazz did relatively well in the pedestrian safety tests. All of the cars were reported to offer only good pedestrian protection with the front bumper, with poor results when it comes to the bonnet.

Even for the Jazz and Hyundai it was the same – the weak point was the car bonnet, which was rated to offer good protection to an adult pedestrian only, but not a child’s, which explains the 60+ marks instead of something higher. It seems that pedestrian safety is not taken as seriously in Europe as it is in countries such as America, which has stringent rules that most of the time call for entirely new larger bumper designs to be installed onto American spec cars.

Hyundai i20

Out of the 5 cars which scored 5 stars, only the Q5, Soul and Peugeot has stability control as standard, which the Jazz and Hyundai i20 (which are in the same segment, the i20 is the replacement for the Hyundai Getz sold here in Malaysia) only having standard stability control on certain models. However Euro NCAP says according to sales trends for the models, a majority of the model mix sold are equipped with ESC as standard.

It’s also very interesting to compare the Jazz and the i20 which are in the same segment’s results. I believe it represents how far Korean automotive engineering have come now, because the i20 outscores the Jazz in pretty much every area, sometimes by more than 10%.

Look after the jump for videos of all the 5 crash tests.
