Massa Crash

Felipe Massa is up and on his feet and can’t wait to get back behind the wheel of his Formula 1 car. He did an exclusive interview with the Ferrari.com official website where he talked about the crash, and Michael Schumacher driving his car, amongst other things. According to Massa, the crash was a strange sort of feeling. He knew that something had happened to him but he didn’t feel anything when it happened. He just lost consciousness and the next thing he remembered was waking up in the hospital two days later. So no, he didn’t consciously brake the car before it hit the barriers. Watch the video after the jump.

“So no, he didn’t consciously brake the car before it hid the barriers”

Hehehehe… Paul… the car hid the barriers?

i think it is just ingrained in racers… its part of their core of their central nervous system… lose consciousness… slam on both pedals…

from the medical point of view, he’s suffering from retrograde amnesia, which means he can’t remember certain events before the accident. in serious cases, he could lose all his previous memory, but in some cases, it only involves certain period of time prior to the accident.

but there is also another theory. he might not be telling the truth, ie he knows bout the crash, but he’s trying to cover something up, or just to save some trouble of more interviews and investigations.

well just a theory. who knows…

Good to see Massa ok. It’s just a freak accident. Can’t blame Brawn at all for it. But definitely something could be done to improve safety especially driver head protection.

Massa’s incident shook F1 because the weekend before Henry Surtees died in F2 with a similar type of incident. A stray wheel hit Surtees head, head-on. So its definitely a wake up call for safety eventhough this type of incident is actually very rare.

In 2007 there was a scary incident involving Alex Wurz and Coulthard. A few inches the wrong way and Wurz would have been dead. If anyone recalls it was the Melbourne F1 I think where Coulthard’s car lifted and slid across Wurz’s cockpit over the steering wheel (and his fingers) and just missing his head. Very scary. Luckily no one go hurt but FIA recognized that something had to be done.
