New BMW 320d EfficientDynamics: a greener 320d

BMW 320d

BMW is making its EfficientDynamics brand have a bigger role than before. Earlier it was just a word to describe a set of fuel saving technologies such as Brake Energy Regeneration and Auto Start-Stop, but now it’s being used as a suffix for cars that are particularly ‘green’. Other car manufacturers also have similiar brands such as Volkswagen’s use of BlueMotion.

The new BMW 320d EfficientDynamics has CO2 emissions of 109g/km and a combined consumption figure of 68.9mpg, which translates to 24.4 km per litre of diesel. The 2.0 litre engine puts out 163hp at 3,500rpm upt o 4,200rpm and 360Nm of torque spread between 1,750rpm to 3,000rpm.

BMW ED WheelsModification over a regular non-EfficientDynamics 320d include a longer final drive, lowered suspension for better aerodynamics, and special aerodynamics alloy wheels with Michelin EnergySaver tyres. The usual set of EfficientDynamics features are also there – Auto Start Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration and Electric Power Steering.

There have also been some modifications to the engine. A dual mass flywheel with springs and new Centrifugal Pendulum Absorbers is fitted between the engine and transmission. The whole point of these modifications that make the engine ‘smoother’ is to allow the diesel engine to spin more smoothly at the lower RPMs that the new final drive provides.

We might see BMWs like this car and the 118d in Malaysia if the new Euro 2M diesel that is supposed to be introduced in September this year is deemed good enough by the car company’s homologation engineers.

2litre diesels at 163hp. Thats even more than 2litre petrol engines these days! Though they are turbocharged to produce that amount of power, diesels are slowly making their way up. Love the new wheels :)

plus diesels really do sound like buses and canal boats….walked in front of a 530d and heard the noise and thought it was a diesel and it is….

helllo nguden, its b'cos in Malaya our diesel is of lowest/poor quality.

hopefully the euro2 quality is better eventhough other countries already

    going for euro4.!!

diesel engines run more efficiently ie mini d when pitted with the prius

was able to beat the prius with an average fuel consumption of 3.5L/100km

vs 3.7L/100km on the highway !!!

looking forward to the new 3 & 5 d series launches.Nice.. hopefully our

beloved govt can give some incentives/rebates to fuel efficient cars.

buy diesel car must choose black colour car o…

then the smoke stain not so obvious. haha…

what's the price of this car?

if diesel cars are cheaper than their petrol siblings, and with the improved diesel quality, maybe more people will go for diesel cars..

If its like RM20k above the standard 320d, then why buy it. Save fuel? Don't think so. RM20k in fuel is a lot of money

hmm.. the second picture shows that the new aerodynamic sports rim is not a cover, but is a whole alloy rim itself.

with it's asymmetrical shape, means left and right wheels cannot be swapped..

wonder how the replacement rim is.. steel rim? or just a normal non-aerodynamic rim? and also, with this rim, the owner can no longer swap the position of his tires as recommended by most tire manufacturers-well, he still can, just that he has to change the tires only, and not the whole wheel.

    =))
