Saudara Shah, saya dah pakai Proton sejak 1988, Proton Saga, Iswara, Wira, now Waja. Semua tak ada masalah.. I always think positive and proud what Proton has achieve... because it is truly a Malaysian car manufacturer. Not only am I proud of Proton but Petronas as well and other Malaysian companies that manufacture goods like electronics, shoes, food etc. These companies contribute to our economic well being making our current account always in surplus since 1997.

Hi Scottloeb
Thanks for understanding. The main issue is even if it has a manufacturing plant in a country, does it have good quality suppliers. Because a manufacturing plant is one big jigsaw puzzle. You need to get parts from one company to another. Its the task of the QC department to really look at the quality of the products made by its vendor.

Mr Ariefinm,
Pardon the boys. They do not know the reality of auto operation. If the plants owned or managed by the principal (for example Toyota Motor Japan, not Astra for TM Manufacturing Indonesia), the standard is at par with other regional player. If major owner of the assembly plant is the local with no management say (in this case, Oriental Motor Johor) than the result is screw up. Indonesia is base for MPV in ASEAN, chosen by most major company due to the competitive labour rates and huge market potential. That is why Perodua plant owned by Nihon-jin have a better reputation than local owned Toyota plant at Shah Alam. The main problem might be localise parts, which happens everywhere. In Merc S Class CKD in Pekan, almost all parts are CKD.

I think Mr Paul should ask readers' opinion on what govt should do to our auto industry, NAP etc, like an open idea exchange and hopefully all those suggestions can be put forward to relevant authorities like MITI, MAA or even directly to PM. Simple emails will do. For the starters, these are just some of the suggestions:

1. Review the AP car policy. For whatever reasons (and unknown mysteries) why it shouldn't be abolished anytime soon, govt must at least set some limit to which car segments open up for AP system while the rest seriously should be operated on open market. My suggestion is that: - cars with 2000cc and above (both for petrol, diesel engine) still subject to AP system while those below 2000cc should compete fully in open market or price at least similar to that Labuan/Langkawi prices. Ok lah, slap a bit on duties taxes but then those items shouldn't be factored in car loans anymore. 2000cc limit actually just to keep some goons happy (can still survive also?) while people have the best choice of cars imaginable finally. Luxury and necessity finally defined on cars.

2. Review road tax policy. Currently road tax is based on engine capacity regardless of petrol or diesel. Govt should reward car users that drive fuel efficient and clean engine cars. Some sort of score points conducted by Puspakom/JPJ to determine two factors: 1. Fuel efficiency (mileage/litre of fuel used or km/Litre) and 2. CO2 emission (grams of C02 emitted per km or CO2g/km). Cars that returns good efficiency and low emission shall pay low road taxes regardless of engine capacity or petrol/diesel engine.

3. Cash for scrapping old cars must be extended to non-national cars. Also, set few criteria to enjoy higher rebates such as those buying new car that is fuel efficient and low emission (these factors officially determine by Puspakom/JPJ) shall entitle more cash rebates. Old cars meanwhile must be disabled definately (pouring sodium mixture to the engine) upon scrapping. While these scheme will receive great demand and to prevent chaos, a monthly quota shall be used and selection based on lottery system to give equal chances to everybody. Govt also can prepare the funds accordingly and shall not be caught up by big demand thus creating funds shortage.

4. Standardised car loan interest rates. This is something that Bank Negara can intervene to stop the financing sector act like a loan sharks once the open car market implemented. But until then, beggars cannot be choosy.

5. No more highway tolls? That is still RM30billion question, sadly.

Think about it: Viva sold at RM15K, Saga RM20K, Persona RM35K, Vios RM45K, Hilux RM70K, Triton RM65K, Camry RM90K etc.

The possible savings from open market, interest rates on car loans anywhere from RM20K per car can easily translate 5-6 years of fuel expenses which otherwise a big burden/ cost of servicing loans to car users. Since car prices at fair price, the fuel price issue will somehow irrelevant and only make the most fuel efficient, less emission cars a sensible choice. The question whether govt then to reduce fuel subsidy, sellling fuel at almost market price can be justifiable with lower cost of car ownership. Those use more fuel ultimately have to pay more or better choose a suitable car accordingly since open car market means you can only pick the best, clean and efficient car.

Well there is a possibility VW wants to assemble the sedans in Malaysia and SUV and MPV in Indonesia considering the market size and share. Indonesia is a number 1 market for MPV (that's why Proton made the Exora which already has 1500 bookings in the first week).

However I must say that our build quality is not bad, you must not under estimate us. I have seen the CKD Touran and it uses the same materials as a normal VW should be. However there are some parts that look cheap but will take time to be enhanced.

Also Indonesia actually exports the Daihatsu Gran Max (rebadged to Toyota Town Ace) in CBU form to Japan. This means we make cars in very strict Japanese quality.

The Touran sells here at around Rp 395.000.000 / RM 136.000 and we consider it to expensive for a MPV that uses 1.4 TSI engine. But there are rumors that they will lower the price if full manufacturing is completed (not the assembly alone)

WTF are u talkin about? VW Cars (a.k.a. Cartrade) is just a lousy car dealer with appalling service. Who are they to "submit" a price to the Gov??? They're NOT the importer.

Paul, we are just deprived for a good car which is sold at a much lower price abroad. Consider a dollar for a dollar, cars are much more affordable in other marketplace. Why?

That plant also assemble Mercedes Benz S500. It they (VW) can make it here, it will be top notch product that stand above most brand of the same category locally. Indonesia still need a while (1-2 years) to reach VW's minimum Automotive quality for Asia market.

Dream on. It will not happen in a million BN years. The other foreign CKD are for the luxury market and the other CKD is for small brands. VW is a giant car manufacturer for the average person, P1 and P2 will pee in their pants if VW can CKD.
