Honda to debut small car concept at India Auto Expo

Honda has announced plans for a world premiere at the India Auto Expo 2010, to be held in New Delhi from January 5 to 11, 2010. Called the “New Small Concept”, the debutant will preview a small car Honda is currently developing for India and emerging markets.

After the Tata Nano, which was launched at the previous Auto Expo, carmakers are all rushing to capture a slice of the Indian market, which has serious potential for growth as a big section of the population are beginning to graduate to four wheels. Early settlers Suzuki (with its Maruti brand) and Hyundai are doing brisk business selling small cars and others want in on the action.

In addition to the New Small Concept, Honda will also parade the CR-Z Concept and wow showgoers with a demonstration by humanoid robot, ASIMO.

I was in Dhaka and New Delhi over the past 6 days, and those cities are jam-packed with small cars. Especially in Delhi, the Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai brands rule the roost.

The way they drive there makes smaller cars more favourable; its almost lawless but you'd hardly see any accidents, although cars are usually scratched and dented everywhere. Its stop start there as everyone moves into any little space available, manueovering not just vehicles, but tut tuts and bikes AND pedestrians! Honking is a normality so much so it would be rude if you don't honk when overtaking! Buses and lorries all paint "Please Horn" on their rear panels! My driver there said: you need 3 things to drive in Delhi sir. Good brake. Good horn. Good luck! I added a fourth – good heart – as you're likely to get a heart attack :)

Anyhoo, I wondered why PROTON is not making an impact with their Savvy. I think with a different, less problematic or risky engine the Savvy could do well in India. Perodua too, especially with the Myvi and Viva.

    Any thoughts Paul?
