Miss Australia Universe endorses the Proton Saga!

Miss Australia Universe endorses the Proton Saga!

The Saga is the latest model to join Proton Australia’s line-up, selling Down Under as the Proton S16. As its name suggests, the S16 is powered by the 110 bhp 1.6-litre Campro IAFM engine paired to a five-speed manual ‘box.

Its drive away retail price of $11,990 makes it the lowest priced new car in Australia. Before launch, Proton billed the S16 as the cheapest sedan in the market, but latest currency exchange rates have given the S16 an even stronger selling point.

The auto version will debut shortly while July 2010 will see the introduction a GXR variant that adds dual airbags, ABS, alloys, reverse sensors and fog lamps to the kit list.

It’s clearly a very good deal, but since the Saga’s looks aren’t exactly what you’d call pretty, Proton Australia has signed on Miss Universe Australia 2009 Rachael Finch for some “look at me” appeal. She will be featured in all S16 ads in Australia. A clearer view of the lovely Miss Finch is available after the jump!

  • If I'm not mistake…for certain fuel consumption cycle, the 1.6L is much more fuel efficient in 1.3L. this is due to engine straining for the smaller displacement to achieve power. so S16 might be more fuel efficient than our own shore's Saga!

    1. There's nothing wrong with hiring a hot model. EVERYTHING — including cars — that is being sold is, most of the time, advertised with a good-looking female (even when not needed). So to those who are complaining about this marketing ploy, just shut up and be thought an idiot rather than speak and remove all doubt.

    2. Everyone should stop complaining about car prices and taxes in Malaysia IN THIS BLOG. EVERYONE KNOWS ABOUT THEM AND EVERYONE KNOWS WHY CARS ARE EXPENSIVE HERE. There's not much you can do about it right now. All the Proton bashers do not hate/dislike Proton — they hate/dislike the government. This blog is about cars, not politics.

    3. However, I agree that the Saga with the above-mentioned specifications SHOULD BE MADE AVAILABLE to the Malaysian public IN Malaysia. It might eat up into other Proton models, but if the volume of sales for Saga can be increased, why not?

Mat Salleh are not 'forced' to buy Proton since they can choose other cars as well. I think what Proton is doing is similar to what Korean did when they first enter the US market. They were selling Hyundai's at a loss of USD1,000 per car just to gain the market share. Look at where they are now.

Double standard? Ko cakap laa dgn kerajaan kita. diorang yg tak enforce utk mewajibkan penggunaan ABS. FYI, lotus ride & handling pun salah satu ciri keselamatan dalam pemanduan. bukan semata2 brek je. Kang taruk ABS, naik harga sket, ko membebel. kalu nak cari yg ada ABS, ko beli laa Persona H Line atau apa2 keta2 lain yg ada ABD. Setiap negara ada regulations kalau kereta nak masuk market diorang. Contoh nya, kadar emission. Malaysia – Euro 2, Thailand – Euro 3, Australia – Euro 4 (tak silap).

Pastu dah Australian Govmt says that every cars in Australia must have ABS, Airbags, etc. Nak masuk market punye pasal, kene laa ikut peraturan. mcm nak masuk umah orang la. kalau masuk umah orang melayu, kene bukak kasut. kalau umah orang putih, tak yah bukak kasut. camtu la brader! Tak paham2 lagi laa. Semua claim diri sendiri tu mcm tahu sgt pasal automotive ni, padahal semua poyo je lebey! Belah ar! Poser punye Basher!

Look, you have to keep in mind that the market here is very different to the Malaysian market. Proton wants to get in cheap and use that as their selling point- something which Hyundai did many years ago with their Excel (which also was about $12k aud). Whilst the equipment spec may seem high to you guys because you have the full range of Saga's available, due to transportation and logistics costs, it's cheaper to have a single model available in Australia. Furthermore, it's also vital that Proton meet Australian safety requirements which are somewhat strict (and this is even listed as a selling point on www.s16.com.au !).

I'd imagine it's cheap in Australia because they are willing to accept thinner profit margins in order to maintain the tagline of cheapest sedan in Australia and in exchange they expect to generate considerably more sales.

I presume you are also smart enough to understand how economic protectionism works and why the big manufacturers from abroad establish local operations using different branding in order to circumvent (or comply with) the protection measures.

    Just FYI,

    Proton – A$11,990/unit

    Yaris – A$15,990/unit

    Corolla – A$21,990/unit

    Kia Rio – A$13,490/unit

    Kia Cerato – A$19,490/unit

    HK Duck Rice – A$9/plate

Within the A$10,000 range (1000 plate of Duck Rice), there is a lot of options. Now you see the competitive of market.

If you compare the rate of living in Malaysia, will you spend 1000 plate of Duck Rice money more to buy a Corolla over a Proton?

Good Luck Proton. Wish you success anyhow. At least I have seen 1 Waja on the street (parking lot actually) throughout my visit to Australia.

Opps forget to mentions..if for the Patriotic Australian..

    Holden Barina – A$13,990

I think we need to understand "put on the market" does not equal to being "sold"…that is crucial facts we need to learn, since a lot of supporter is happy that we got products "put on the market", but forget it is "sold" or not. With that, we can keep improve ourselves to compete.

Let us improve together with Proton, don't proud to be "put on market", we need to be proud to be "sold". Or else, we are keep producing products that is not wanted by the market and waste a lot of time…and investor (aka Gov) money.

There's only so much that designers can do if a car is not built from scratch. For a car that is based on existing platform, the new Saga is not bad at all. Fitted with right bodykit, it will hug the road… reminds me of Fiat Ritmo Abarth.

You’re WRONG! Proton is a GLC (GOVERNMENT-LINKED CORPORATIONS). Proton bashers (like me) hate Proton AND the government not for who they are but for what they are doing to us automotive consumers. While I do admit not all Proton bashers hate the government, I do believe people feel mistreated and helpless. And if you feel there is nothing that can be done, you’re WRONG again. The way is through votings and the general elections.

    Regards.

I just want ABS brakes option for my brand new Saga. That's all. I don't give darn about the airbags. I'm quite upset to see Australians having a chance to get it, while Proton will not even offer it as an option or a 'highline' spec. Offer jer option. Apa susah. Tak pun jual as after market option under R3 or something. Pakai airbag, sekali jer pastu hancus. ABS is always there to save your sorry arse. Time and time again. BTW, Proton Saga quality is top notch for a car at that price, be it in AU or MY. Don't complain too much about quality if you don't know how to judge it.

They just earn quick bucks and sub out the job after getting the tender. Sometimes they so desperate to sub out the job they even ask any chap ayam workshop under the tree to do the job. I have someone knocking on my door asking me to do some painting job. Said 300 unit, i reject cause i only operate under three workshop, then he ask me 30 boleh? WTF????

So, Proton manufactured their cars here in Malaysia 100% and yet consumers are paying more for it? Sales tax is in OK, what other tax you recon? None existent import duty from Tg Malim to dealer?! Transportation fees? transporter that carries at least 6 cars to dealer only cost way below RM1K!

Alza is make in malaysia but then it is far more expensive then original made in japan. remember, the labour cost and other cost in jap is far more then in malaysia.

so conclusion, find out who make rakyat pay for high price and not pointing finger at any company as this will not solve the problem.

    http://www.redbook.com.au/new-cars/details.aspx?R…

    the price stated 11990 BUT

    it's just a price guide

Price Guide – refers to the price provided to us by a manufacturer for a vehicle and excludes costs, such as options, dealer delivery, stamp duty, and other government charges, that may apply. Always check the single figure price with the seller of a vehicle before purchasing.

Meaning without gst like someone post before

  • Proton – A$11,990/unit

    Yaris – A$15,990/unit

    Corolla – A$21,990/unit

    Kia Rio – A$13,490/unit

    Holden Barina – A$13,990 /unit

    Kia Cerato – A$19,490/unit

If you think you can get a 3 door Yaris for $15990 you are dreaming. They really start at $19,000 once OTR costs are factored in… you're not going to drive a new yaris without insurance! A midrange 5 door Yaris Sedan costs closer to AUD23k for the auto version OTR. I know this cuz I actually went car shopping in australia not too long ago.

Im not exactly sure what "drive away" price means, but if I recall correctly it includes govt charges such as plates, registration and tax where applicable. "Drive away" as your car is legal on the road. I dont think it includes delivery charges (factory to dealer) that is around AUD1500 from SEA…as it varies by state (ie. Sydney is much further than Darwin from malaysia). Also note that insurance is not mandatory. Price inclusive of comprehensive insurance is likely to be about AUD1200 more for your average 25yo/m driver. Nobody drives a new car without insurance!!

Hence the real OTR cost (inclusive 3rd party insurance and dealer delivery) of the australian 1.6 saga should be closer to about AUD14,000 (RM42,000). I have not seen Proton cars cheaper anywhere around the world compared to malaysia**.

Proton genuinely makes cheap cars. And I think the new saga will be competitive against the other cars in it's class, namely the Hyundai Getz and Kia Rio. Looks wise, it simply looks a hell lot better than any car for a similar price and has five doors and a proper boot. Im sure if Mercedes made a budget A class sedan that looked exactly like the Saga everyone would be praising it's looks. Cut the bias pls.. It's a freaking cheap car that has decent looks, an achievement by itself.

**excluding oil rich gulf states where tax is absent (yes proton pays tax in malaysia too), registration is free, and insurance not compulsory.

    Jack Hammer,

Daihatsu & Toyota the parent company does sell a lot of mini compact cars there, so why want to sell Perodua in Australia?

I felt sorry for Proton supporter as they cant even get the best just like the Japs in their country… Even Thai get CPS engine first compare to us..  When they are frustrated, they will just use Perodua to distract the attention.

Yup, Perodua also sucks in this country due to only one competitor to fight.. As they are forced to lower their quality to be on par to sell in this country.. Still their sales seems going strong..

If compare the other 1, they should have give the people better spec first before selling it to others just like JDM people doing it. The excuse is that people dont like this & that.. add cost bla bla bla… But how come the price not so expensive in Aus with added spec? Funny…

But what i can say is that, the unfair competitive market have eat our people's money just to make better cars for other… If everyone is selling open market price, i think long time ago Saga will be in full spec selling this kind of price to fight against Hyundai accent , i30 or other same pricing car in Malaysia.. So, if you still dont like the way we have for 50 years. Just remember to change it in a few years time. Time to wake up brothers & sister, we are not babies anymore..  Remember during 2007 they mention about abolish NAP? Until 2010 also still delaying…

Aku rasa baik ditutup terus jer Proton ni. Membazir jer. Patriotik kepala butolah!!!!

No wonder there is still a lot of dumbass Malaysian here keep relating proton n bn.grow up malaysian,if proton is a gov project, why they don't elect minister to be the CEO of proton, the problem is vendor, how do you all know that the vendor is umno member……Because this is Malaysia,we are not Japanese who already a legend in automotive, because we are lack of potential engineer, designer, because a lot of Malaysian out there can't really help our economy to grow, jangan terlalu bergantung kepada orang luar untuk bina kereta untuk kita, kita tak akan majulah kalau macam tu,we have to compete with them.and just pray that our Malaysian carmaker will improve and hope that the coming generation will contribute to bring Malaysia further than what we had achieve now.tq.I hope my English is not to bad

Damn some of my posts I made using Google Chrome did not make it through for some reason.

Anyway, drive-away pricing is literally drive-away pricing here. It's inclusive of all taxes and dealer delivery charges. Under recent consumer law in Australia, all advertised prices must be all inclusive to the end consumer. This is a pain because each state is responsible for their own road taxes and hence the dealers in each state have to absorb any differences in margins as a result of higher taxes.

Insurance is compulsory here for third party (i.e. if you hit someone else). Comprehensive insurance is organised independently of the sale of the vehicle and is dependent on other factors (i.e. cost of repairs, person driving's history, age, background, etc… where the car is parked primarily, primary usage of vehicle, etc). For example, my Civic FD1's insurance is about 1/4 of the price of my Evo X's insurance despite only driving the Evo on weekends.

Redbook is meant to be used to find out used car values by averaging private sale numbers so individuals can calculate the value of their car rather than arbitrarily using tax depreciation. This does not include GST for private sales as under Australian tax law, private vehicle sales do not attract GST liability but they may potentially constitute a capital asset disposal depending on the use of the vehicle during it's period of ownership.

Coming back to the topic of pricing, keep in mind that not every company uses the cost+margin approach to pricing a product. It could very well be that Australian markets save money by only having a single model with single specification level and thus minimises the costs of getting it here. Then also consider they are trying to get a foothold into our market and need to price aggressively below what the competition is offering. As someone else posted above, a Yaris is only a few thousand aussie more (i.e. RM10k) and that is around one month's wage on average earnings in Australia… so it's important that Proton prices their car very aggressive to earn marketshare.

Kenapa dengar org yg cakap mencarut?  Lagi mencarut, lagi berdesing telinga kita dengar kan?  Kalau dia mencarut, kau rasa cakap dia tu mesti tak betul kan?  Terlalu penuh dengan emosi yg membuak-buak hingga lupa fikiran rasional.  Sebenarnya org mencarut ni dia terkilan pasal dia tak dapat habuan gak.  Dia nak gak rasa senang.  Tapi pasal kuat mencarut, mana ada org nak dengar dia.  Jadi kat kerja ke, kat bizness ker, tak berapa menjadi.  Kepala dia ingat dia aje betul.

Kesian kan kalau org yg takde minda terbuka, mana-mana dia nak pergi pun tak boleh pergi jauh.  Baik dia tinggalkan negara ni.  Dia ingat dia boleh hidup lagi senang kat negara org.  Dapat kereta sedap, tapi income tax 40%.  Hidup kau tu, setakat dapat kereta sedap ajelah.  Soru miss buat ape?  Rumah dah nak runtuh buat ape?  Kau hiduplah dlm kereta sedap tu.  Biar kau berkubur sekali dalamnya.

There's more to life than a car.  Go get one.  Get a life dude.

Bashing is different than giving out constructive criticisms. The bashers frequently cite old stories about power window problems but didn't acknowledge the improvements that have been made with the new models. This is the reason why some people here are irritated with the bashers. Plus many of them offer no ideas on improving Proton so that their cars are up to international standards.

BTW, I also have a 5 year old Honda City, and I feel very frustrated with all the problems of that car (faulty door lock mechanism and it's replacement, which is also faulty, panels coming off, side mirror switch not working) despite frequent maintenance and careful driving, whereas my Gen2 has no big problems whatsoever!

    Bashing and constructive criticisms.

Either way both are two sides of a coin.

Same story, different way of narrating.

    Example 1: bashing

    Proton sucks!

Example 2: the so called "positive criticism"

    Proton needs to improve.

    Conclusion:

Proton sucks and they need to improve.

    Proton – A$11,990/unit

    Yaris – A$15,990/unit

    Corolla – A$21,990/unit

    Kia Rio – A$13,490/unit

    Holden Barina – A$13,990 /unit

    Kia Cerato – A$19,490/unit

If you think you can get a 3 door Yaris for $15990 you are dreaming. They really start at $19,000 once OTR costs are factored in… you’re not going to drive a new yaris without insurance! A midrange 5 door Yaris Sedan costs closer to AUD23k for the auto version OTR. I know this cuz I actually went car shopping in australia not too long ago.

Im not exactly sure what “drive away” price means, but if I recall correctly it includes govt charges such as plates, registration and tax where applicable. “Drive away” as your car is legal on the road.

** I have not seen Proton cars cheaper anywhere around the world compared to malaysia **.

Proton genuinely makes cheap cars. And I think the new saga will be competitive against the other cars in it’s class, namely the Hyundai Getz and Kia Rio. Looks wise, it simply looks a hell lot better than any car for a similar price and has five doors and a proper boot. Im sure if Mercedes made a budget A class sedan that looked exactly like the Saga everyone would be praising it’s looks. Cut the bias pls.. It’s a freaking cheap car that has decent looks, an achievement by itself.

**excluding oil rich gulf states where tax is absent (yes proton pays tax in malaysia too), registration is free, and insurance not compulsory.

Saga's profit margin is negligible. I think if not for so-called 'national service', Proton wouldn't even want to sell it because they can't get the volume to lower the cost and give them a comfortable margin.

Until it sells well in Oz and other countries and increases production volume, don't expect much improvements to the standards of the Saga except for some bodykit variants.

Prior, the name S16 has always been given to a sporty car, with image and overall package offering similar to a GTI -level car..

its rather inappropriate for a SEDAN with a BASIC 1.6L engine to be called a S16.

"hidden charges"? Can you not read my comment?!! Drive-away in Australia literally means drive away. It includes all compulsory costs, taxes, etc… I don't know why you are trying to justify or make this argument biased/prejudiced for no reason.

Remember: Make observations THEN draw conclusions. Don't try to find observations which happen to justify your belief.

You had mentioned many times that your brother are engineer at proton??..hehe..very proud eh? ? But u forgot that u are not same as him..Your comments show who u really are…

I think you should attend a proper civic class to learn how to write civilized comments/critics/opinions…don't simply used word "bodoh" to anyone…

Pls make a discussion with knowledge and matured.

    To JaCe,

May be he means that hidden charges(inclusive 3rd party insurance and dealer delivery) base on ezra comment..u should read above comments first. Ezra did mention that he had went car shopping in Australia not too long ago. Hmm…may be yes..may be no…

stormtrooper- I do not mean to put others down but this would be my area of knowledge since I both a) live in Australia (I am citizen here since birth) and b) I have purchased two brand new cars (Honda FD1, Mitsu Evo X) in the past few years (in addition to helping a lot of friends with buying cars from dealers) and am quite familiar with the process. I think ezra may not be as familiar with the process. The only exception to this would be buying used vehicles which may not be inclusive of all prices/taxes since these are not covered by the Australian consumer code (which applies to dealers) or parallel importers (which is not so common here due to tight regulations/restrictions).

Back to my point above, drive away IS inclusive of those dealer delivery costs, GST, luxury car tax (if applicable), compliance costs (if applicable), etc… it is also now illegal in Australia to advertise a non driveaway price I believe without clarifying what is not included (e.g. state taxes). For companies like Proton however they are using national pricing structure where individual state dealers absorb any differences.

  • full spec on Jan 12, 2010 at 10:57 pm

pendapat aku, elok sume model proton kuar yang full spec aje.

    that means..complete with abs,dual airbag (at least),reverse sensors,15''+ sport rims,..cruise control.,5 speed for automatic..etc

    then,untuk SE (special edition)

  • full spec right. kenapa proton kene ada banyak version? let make things clear, all proton models make high end full spec.. nak tambah option lagi cuma add r-type or limited edition.. hey… kan ada R3? so, bila standard proton car ada abs, ebd, airbag, bodykit, blutooth, automatic rain sensor (kan negara kita paling banyak terima hujan nape x pasang kat proton, geografi failed ke? ooops… sory…) sunroof, phd eh, etc….. ha baru la org akan kata 'proton is a good car' 'good job pro-ton.. hmm… mungkin air-cond kat kilang proton sejuk sangatt kot? or proton takut sales jatuh kot? my dear proton… i grow up with proton. i love proton… i'm sure other's too….

I can hardly find an online brochure locally regarding this model
    hope someone can enlighten me/us.
Is it written anywhere that the new proton saga model comes with fuel injection system?
I only heard it comes with a new air intake system that enables the engine to “breathe” better which also results in better torque and driveability.

    Regards,
    Sheila
