Done deal: Volkswagen takes 49.9 percent stake in Porsche for €3.9 billion

Porsche-Museum

This is the classic case of overambition gone wrong. David doesn’t upset the odds this time around and gets swallowed up by Goliath instead. The David here is of course Porsche, the small sportscar maker trying to take control of Volkswagen, the giant that has Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley, Bugatti, Skoda and Seat under its stable. We can now officially add Porsche to that list as VW has completed the deal to take a 49.9 percent stake in the Stuttgart based company for €3.9 billion.

VW describes the move as “the next milestone on the way towards the integrated automotive group with Porsche under the leadership of Volkswagen”. A carmaker as prolific as Porsche would look good in any group’s portfolio, and this acquisition will undoubtedly strengthen VW’s position in the premium sector plus provide synergy in costs.

Best of all (for VW, that is), the Group’s annual operating profit is expected to increase by some €700 million in the long term, thanks to Porsche’s ability to sell cars at a big profit. Porsche’s ex CEO Wendelin Wiedeking took over the reins when Porsche was on the verge of bankruptcy, transforming it into the world’s most profitable automaker. But in trying to usurp VW, he took it a step too far.

Tata Nano based Penguin pick-up caught testing!

tata-penguin

This is the Tata Nano based 0.5-tonne pick-up truck scheduled for Indian market introduction next year. Codenamed Penguin (it looks like a penguin too, doesn’t it?), the bird’s four wheeled namesake will compete with the just launched Mahindra Gio – a simple two-seat machine powered by a 441cc direct injection two-pot diesel.

The Tata is reported to be powered by a 350cc one-cylinder diesel engine, not likely to top the Gio’s 55km/h top speed, 9.5bhp and 21Nm of torque. The Penguin uses proven simple and cost saving techniques from the Nano like a single windshield wiper, three wheel lugs, scooped out dashboard and short wheelbase. The engine is mounted at the rear axle, so it doesn’t need a propeller shaft.

There will be plenty of mocking, but I think that these low cost machines are perfect for the intended market and a logical development from three-wheel auto rickshaws and bullock carts currrently used to ferry anything from manure to gas cylinders. The modest performance is adequate in bustling Indian cities, where initial acceleration from rest is more important than an 80km/h cruise speed. You’ll know what I mean if you’ve visited Delhi or Mumbai before.

Yulon’s Luxgen has a second model – new SUV

luxgen-suv

Don’t confuse this with GM’s Chevy Tahoe-based GMC Yukon SUV, this is an SUV from Yulon, the Taiwanese company who now has a two model line-up in its Luxgen range of vehicles. The first is a turbocharged sliding door MPV based on an old Renault Espace platform. This is a new SUV that’s supposed the size of a Porsche Cayenne.

A few months ago we got news that Yulon would be joining forces with Dongfeng to sell an SUV in both Chinese and Taiwanese markets. It looks like this is what they were talking about. Part of the partnership included Dongfeng taking up a 20% stake in Yulon’s Luxgen Motor Co, the unit that makes the SUV and MPV.

Subaru is back in rallying – signs up for the 2010 Intercontinental Rally Challenge

subaru-rally

Subaru is finally back where it belongs – rallying on the world stage. For so many of us, the default mental image of Subaru is of a blue rally Impreza with the famous yellow stars on its side, probably with McRae or Solberg kicking up some dirt. It was sad news when Subaru announced in 2008 that it would be leaving the World Rally Championship, but they are now back, not in the WRC but in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC). Parent company Fuji Heavy Industries has announced that it will register as a manufacturer for the 2010 IRC season. There won’t be a works team, but Subaru will provide customer cars and is eligible to collect points.

Organised by sports channel Eurosport, IRC seems to be gaining momentum to unseat WRC as the premier rally series, and it already has eight automakers signed up to compete next year – the Group N Impreza will be joining rivals from Abarth (Fiat), Honda, Mitsubishi, Peugeot, Skoda, Volkswagen and our very own Proton to race in legendary events such as the Safari Rally and Rally Monte-Carlo, which is the season’s curtain raiser. Be sure to mark down 19 January 2010 on your calendar!

New Citroën C3: Small car with big windscreen!

Citroen-C3

This is the new Citroen C3, which the French carmaker touts as the new B-segment benchmark. It replaces the cute and round original that was quite a radical design when it was unveiled back in 2002. Citroen has sold two million examples since then, and the range saw new members over the years, such as the oddball C3 Pluriel and more recently, the funky C3 Picasso MPV.

Launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the C3 has one of the smaller footprints in the supermini class, despite growing marginally in length and width (it’s 5cm shorter than Corsa and 9cm shorter than 207 and Clio). The wheelbase is unchanged but Citroen claims good cabin space and class-leading 300 litres of boot volume.

Citroen-C3-roof

It’s obvious that the new C3 is a reinvention of the old car rather than a rethink, as it retains the curved roofline and glasshouse its predecessor was known for. What’s new is the ‘Zenith windscreen’ which stretches so far back, it cuts off near the car’s B-pillar. If you’ve ever been in the C4 Picasso MPV, you’ll understand the appeal of this large glass area – the view out its truly panaromic, perfect for sightseeing and it gives the cabin an airy feel. Should you get tired of the light, there’s a sunblind and tinting for the topmost part of the windscreen. The cabin is funky yet classy, not always the case with imaginative French designs.

Four petrol engines are on the list – 61bhp 1.1, 75bhp 1.4, 95bhp 1.4 and a 120bhp 1.6 – the latter two belong to the BMW-PSA Prince family. The French make some of the best diesel engines, and the C3′s three HDi engines with Citroen’s Diesel Particulate Filter System ranging from 70bhp to 110bhp will be the main sellers in Europe. Every range must have a headlining green model these days, and the Airdream+ edition (90bhp 1.6HDi) emits just 99g/km of CO2 – the first Citroën to dip below 100g/km. To further promote economical driving, most versions feature a Gear Efficiency Indicator, which alerts the driver of the optimum moment to change gear.

Beijing Automotive obtains $2.9 billion credit – funds to take over Saab?

saab-9-5

Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Corp (BAIC) has obtained a 20 billion yuan (US$ 2.93 billion) line of credit from the Bank of China, believed to be the funds needed to buy over Swedish automaker Saab from current owner GM, according to Reuters.

BAIC declined to comment on this latest development but said that it might still be interested in buying Saab, after a consortium led by Swede supercar maker Koenigsegg, of which BAIC was a part of, pulled out of talks with GM. The ailing American giant has said that it will wind down Saab’s operations if a suitable buyer is not found by the end of December, so BAIC could be the marque’s much-needed saviour.

The Beijing based company, which recently launched a self-made electric car, is seeking to compete with more successful local rivals such as Shanghai Automotive (SAIC), which has winning partnerships with China’s market leaders GM and Volkswagen. BAIC has tie ups with Daimler and Hyundai, but is looking to boost production figures and car making capability by having Saab on board. The company’s first step was to buy over production equipment of the previous generation Saab 9-5 – production of the ‘new’ car will start early next year.

Aston Martin Rapide price announced – it costs two Porsche Panameras!

aston rapide

Gearing up for the big launch in the first quarter of 2010, Aston Martin has announced the UK price of its Rapide. The firm’s “first four-door sports car” and also the first Aston Martin not to be made-in-England – it’s hand-built at Magna Steyr’s Graz, Austria plant – will start from £139,950 in the UK.

What can that sum buy you? Well, a V8 Panamera S is listed at £72,266 so technically you can have two of Porsche’s four doors for the price of one Rapide with a few options added (a range topping Panamera Turbo costs £95,298).

The Aston’s list price includes a bespoke Bang & Olufsen Beosound audio system, heated memory seats, dual cast brakes and Adaptive Damping System, among other kit. It is powered by a 6.0-litre V12 with 470bhp.

The car is currently going through final engineering and testing. Order books are open for the 2000 or so Rapides that will be made per year, so if you fancy one put your name down at Aston Martin Lagonda (S.E.A.) Pte Ltd, official dealer for Malaysia and Singapore.

Hyundai i30 Test Drive Review

hyundai-i30

Over the past year, the Malaysian car market has been blessed with much more variety than we’re used to seeing, and some new entries have blurred the price lines that many use to categorise cars.

For instance, someone looking to purchase a Vios or City at the region of RM90,000 will have new alternatives from a class above priced within reach. The Peugeot 308 VTi is one such good value product, the others being the just launched Kia Forte and the subject of this test report – the Hyundai i30.

Mazda CX-7 now officially in Malaysia

mazda-cx-7

The Mazda CX-7 crossover is now officially available in Malaysia, sold at Bermaz Motor showrooms nationwide. Previously, if you wanted one, the only avenue was grey importers like Naza World. The model launched is the latest facelifted variant, which has a broad ‘smiley’ face. Click here to link back to our earlier post on the facelifted CX-7, which has all you need to know about the car.

I understand that the reason why it has took so long to arrive here is because the the CX-7′s turbocharged engine had issues working with our poor quality fuel, as told by a Mazda engineer back at the Mazda6 launch – well, that hasn’t improved by leaps and bounds, but since it’s now here, we presume the 234bhp/350Nm 2.3-litre DISI engine has no problem using Euro2 fuel. Power goes to all wheels via a 6-speed ‘Activematic’ auto ‘box.

As with Mazda’s CBU range, the CX-7′s equipment range is generous – keyless entry/stary, leather, HID headlamps and 18-inch wheels, sunroof and Bose stereo are among the standard kit. It is priced at RM248,008 excluding insurance, about RM50K below the seven-seat CX-9, which is selling pretty well.

Renault F1 Team is torn between two buyers

renault_R28

Renault looks likely to end its time as a full fledged constructor in Formula 1 and is set to sell its F1 operations, but is torn between two buyers – UK-based Prodrive and Luxembourg investment fund Genii Capital, according to Autosport. There is a possibility that the Renault name will still be on the grid next season, but with new people calling the shots.

The report says that Genii Capital’s plan is to take financial control of the team, but for it to remain Renault for at least another two years. Company head Gerard Lopez has agreed to incorporate the Renault Driver Development programme into his Gravity Sports Management company if he takes over the team. France’s Le Parisien suggests that Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn favours this route, which also has the blessing of F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.

On the other side of the coin, it is believed that the current Renault F1 team management favours Prodrive’s bid. Prodrive is run by David Richards (also the chairman of Aston Martin), whose vast experience of running F1 teams (BAR and Benetton) will be an asset, and his involvement would allow Renault to fully withdraw its name from the sport.

The next season in F1 will see a vastly changed paddock with so many exits and entries. Are you looking forward to it?
