Facelifted Nissan Qashqai revealed!

qashqai-nissan

Nissan has just unveiled its facelifted Qashqai mid-sized crossover, a car positioned in Europe as an alternative to traditional VW Golf class hatchbacks. Since its March 2007 launch, the Qashqai has exceeded Nissan’s sales expectations, with the 500,000th customer delivery set to take place before the end of 2009. Last year saw the introduction of the Qashqai+2, a seven-seat long wheelbase version of the original. The Qashqai is called the Dualis in Japan, and a few of those can be found on our streets as grey imports.

The biggest visual change is at the front with a new bonnet, front bumper, wings, grille and headlamps. Behind, the redesigned light clusters retain the same shape but are tweaked to reduce drag, while the tail lights are now of the LED variety. Two new five-spoke rim designs are available as well. Coefficient of drag (cd) has dropped from 0.34 to 0.33.

Inside, the cabin features a new dial design for added clarity while the redesigned trip computer with white text display sits between them. Further improvements include ambient lighting around the front footwells. New cubbys have been added too. Nissan claims improved isolation against noise, vibration and harshness, achieved by adding multi-layer insulation material around the front bulkhead, plus the fitment of an ‘acoustic’ windscreen. Wind noise around the A-pillar has also been lowered. Finally, the suspension has been tuned for improved ride comfort.

Joining the two petrol (1.6 and 2.0) and two diesel (1.5 and 2.0) models is a 1.5 dCi Pure Drive variant that produces only 129g/km of CO2. This is achieved via weight reduction, aerodynamic wheel covers, blanking of the fog lamp sockets, low rolling resistance tyres and lengthening of the final drive ratio.

US market Hyundai Sonata to be 4-pot only!

us-new-hyundai-sonata-1

Here’s a whole load of new shots of the new Hyundai Sonata from the LA Auto Show, the first time the new Sonata has been exhibited to the American public. It’s very very different from the Sonatas of the past as Hyundai has decided to give the new Sonata a Passat CC-like look. Just look at that curving roofline!

Hyundai is also boldly offering it as an inline-4 only product in North America, a land where even your average Camry and Accord is purchased with large V6 engines with displacements in excess of 3.0 litres. The Sonata which this new one replaces came with a 3.3 litre V6 engine.

The sole 4-pot engine at launch time is the new 2.4 litre direct injection engine producing 198 horsepower in the new Sonata. Two more engines will be added later but they will also be inline-4 engines – a 2.0 litre turbo and a 2.4 litre hybrid.

Look after the jump for a full photo gallery for the US market.

GT Academy transforms couch potato Playstation racers into real ones!

gt academy

Nissan and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have joined forces to bring Gran Turismo fans the ultimate competition. Called GT Academy 2010, it will go live on 17 December, and will use the virtual world of the new PlayStation Gran Turismo 5 game to find a real-world racing driver. Prize? The winner gets to swap his dirty sofa for a snug race bucket with safety harness in an intensive race training programme and a season-long drive in a the European GT4 Cup! He or she will be driving a full race-spec Nissan 370Z. Think of this as the car enthusiast’s Idol singing competition.

In the inaugural GT Academy 2008/09, Lucas Ordoñez, a 23-year-old Spanish student, graduated from his PlayStation 3 to debut in the Dubai International 24 Hour race alongside former F1 driver Johnny Herbert. He then teamed-up with British driver Alex Buncombe to campaign a Nissan 350Z in the European GT4 Cup, which runs alongside the FIA GT series. Driving for the RJN Motorsport GT Academy team, their season included two race wins and two second-place finishes that left them second in the drivers’ classification and winners of the Teams’ Championship – proof that the world of virtual racing can unearth a real racing talent!

The GT Academy is open to participants from 15 European countries, Australia and New Zealand. Anyone who holds, or has held, a national or international race license is ineligible. I reckon that had the competition been open to Malaysia, one of our own would be going very far!

Suzuki offers $100 test drive incentive for Audi and Acura buyers!

suzuki-kizashi

No, this is not a scam. Suzuki has drawn up this US-only scheme for the good looking Kizashi saloon which hits American showrooms this month. Suzuki calls its D-segment challenger ‘sports sedan’ and has targetted not Accord/Mazda 6 buyers, but junior execs from premium brands such as Audi and Acura!

To be eligible for the $100 cheque or debit card, those considering an Audi A4 or Acura TSX (the European market Accord) must first test drive a Kizashi at a Suzuki dealer and complete the registration form. Then, if you still actually buy the Audi A4 2.0T or a four-cylinder Acura TSX within 10 days, the 100 bucks is yours.

“The Kizashi was designed to offer a premium driving experience consistent with the near-luxury sport sedan segment. With styling, performance characteristics, luxury features and a new advanced AWD system on par with the Audi A4 and Acura TSX, we’re providing potential sport sedan buyers another reason to consider the Kizashi-at a substantial savings. We’re definitely putting Kizashi’s premium without the premium moniker to the test,” explains Koichi Suzuki, executive vice president of American Suzuki Automotive Operations.

Novel idea isn’t it? Will something like this work in our part of the world?

For more information about the Kizashi, read up Paul’s earlier post here.

2009 LA Show: Dodge Viper bids farewell with more performance, options and limited editions

dodge-viper-acr

Los Angeles is shaping up to be a big farewell party for the icons. Besides Volkswagen releasing the Final Edition of its New Beetle, Dodge has annouced that 2010 will be the last model year for the Viper, America’s performance car legend. And for a fitting sendoff, performance is enhanced, new colours added and limited-edition models are planned.

Powered by a 8.4-litre V10 with 600bhp and 760Nm, the Viper SRT10 sprints to 100km/h from rest in less than 4 seconds, with a top speed of 325km/h. A new shorter fifth gear ratio benefits high-speed acceleration and straightline speed. The hardcore ACR (American Club Racer) model gets a new short throw shifter and aero tweaks for, yes, higher top speed as well!

Two new exterior colours – Toxic Orange Pearl Coat and Bright Silver Metallic Clear Coat – joins the existing 10. With this, Dodge says that over 7,600 possible appearance combinations are possible for the final 500 or so Vipers that will roll out next year.

Several limited-edition models are planned for 2010, including the ACR 1:33 Edition, which pays tribute to the new production car lap record set on 24 November at Laguna Seca. It gets a two-tone black/red colour scheme, piano black console bezels with red gauge highlights and red stitching for the seats. Only 33 will be produced. Meanwhile, the Vooodoo-edition Viper ACR features a Black Clear Coat exterior with Graphite Driver’s Stripe outlined in red. Only 10 cars will be available with this unique striping on both exterior and steering wheel. Pricing and more special models will be announced later.

vw-beetle-final-edition

Mitsubishi RVR: official name for new crossover

mitsubishi-rvr-1

First we saw the sketch, and now the production model has been revealed. This is Mitsubishi’s new compact crossover that will go on sale in Europe in Japan from February next year onwards, before touching European soils at Geneva 2010.

The new ‘compact crossover’ is called the Mitsubishi RVR, and will be powered by a new 1.8 litre MIVEC engine. Mitsubishi says this is all-new but it could be the 4B10, a smaller version of the 2.0 litre 4B11 found in the Mitsubishi Lancer GT here in Malaysia.

mitsubishi-rvr-2

The new Mitsubishi RVR is about 4,300mm in length (we don’t have the full dimension numbers yet as this is just an initial unveiling), but a 4.3 meter length is much longer tan the Toyota Urban Cruiser’s 3,930mm length. 4.3 meters is much closer to the short wheelbase Toyota RAV4′s 4,395mm length and Peugeot 3008′s 4,365mm length.

You could probably consider it a tall riding version of the Lancer Sportback. These two shots are all we have right now so I’ll update you later when there are more, especially shots of the interior.

2009 LA Show: Third-generation US-market Toyota Sienna MPV is new but looks familiar

toyota-sienna

One of the world premieres at the ongoing LA show is the new Toyota Sienna MPV. Our part of the world may be more familiar with Sienna the actress than Sienna the minivan because the latter, now in its third generation, is a US specific model bulit in America for Americans. Its rival is the US market Honda Odyssey, which is bigger than the JDM model we get here – some of you of may know it as the Honda LaGreat.

Toyota promises a sedan-like drive for the Sienna, besides offering comfort and cargo space required of a minivan (that’s what Americans call their MPVs). The new car is much more dynamic looking than its predecessor, and incorporates much of Toyota’s new MPV design language, as seen on its Japanese market people carriers. To these eyes, the Sienna looks much like the new Wish from the front three-quarter view and resembles the current Estima from the rear. What do you think?

toyota-sienna-back

Two engines are available: a 266bhp 3.5-litre V6 or a 187bhp 2.7-litre four-cylinder. Both powerplants have Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), roller rocker arms and an Acoustically Controlled Induction System (ACIS) that changes the length of the air-intake pipe to supply more torque on demand. A six-speed automatic gearbox with sequential shift is the only transmission available. The Sienna is unique in its segment by having AWD as an option, useful in winter.

The Sienna’s rear-seat Dual View Entertainment Center is a Toyota first. It uses two side-by-side displays to create a joint 16.4-inch widescreen image from a single source – the two individual screens can be used seperately with different inputs, of course. With displays combined, it can be easily seen from the third row, and is controllable from any seat via remote control.

Toyota Sienna Seats

Buyers can choose between seven or eight-seat cabin configurations. In the former layout, the second row captain chairs slide by almost 60cm, creating legroom for the longest legs and for easy ingress/egress. They can be pushed forward close to the front row – useful for parents with young children or for good access to the last row. An illuminated sliding center console can be shared between the front seats and second row passengers.

It doesn’t look like a box on wheels and has the makings of a perfect family car, but sadly the left-hand-drive only Sienna is not making its way out of North America anytime soon.

PSA Peugeot-Citroen to buy Mitsubishi stake?

Citroen C-Crosser
One of the first fruits of the PSA-Mitsubishi partnership

The world’s automakers continue to be rocked by the recession and lots of changes are being made to trim fat, find synergies, stay afloat and continue to be profitable, or even continue existing for same! Now we could be looking at another French-Japanese alliance. Aafter all Renault-Nissan seems to be working well. Nikkei English News claims that PSA Peugeot Citroen would be taking up a stake of between 30 to 50 percent in Mitsubishi, if talks go well and an agreement is reached.

Mitsubishi and PSA currently have a few projects together. Most of them involve PSA using Mitsubishi products to plug gaps in their product offering, such as the Mitsubishi Outlander being sold in Europe as the Peugeot 4007 and Citroen C-Crosser. French badges are also put on the Mitsubishi i as PSA’s own electric offerings.

Peugeot did not comment on whether this was true. Mitsubishi didn’t either, but said that it was in talks with the French automaker group to increase their levels of cooperation. They did not deny that a capital tie-up could be one of the options being considered.
