Lotus files patent for twin clutch transmission

It seems that Lotus has filed a patent for their own twin clutch transmission design on the 30th of December 2009. The Applicant is listed as Lotus Cars GB and the ‘inventor’ is a certain Mr James William Griffith Turner.

Here is the full patent filed:

If this patent goes into production, we could be looking at new Lotus cars such as the Evora getting a twin clutch transmission soon, which is actually something quite important to increase the Evora’s sales and market share. It may be award-winning but there are probably alot of potential customers with the money don’t want to do the shifting themselves with the current 6-speed manual option.

It might costs them a lot of money for the developement and I hope Proton will get that piece of technology too since they own Lotus. Overall it is a good news and hope that they could build and design their own (turbocharged) engine coupled with this transmission like how McLaren succeed with the MP4-12C.

please note that you shouldn’t compare the race version vs the road ver …
the mechanical device is very different in design, but concept is the same …

yeah~! finally some good news from abroad , altho , if agusta would still be around , we could've improved on R&D of small engines…

I hope lotus&proton really2 research thoroughly and come out with a good car…it'll be worth the wait rather than being criticized continuously…..

Wishfully thinking Proton can get this technology and put it on all the high end cars. Gen2, Satria, Waja Replacement Model, Could use campro with this Lotus-DSG in future since it looks like these cars are placed higher up than persona, savvy, saga.

why are you lot still thinking about proton utilising lotus technology. proton hasn't done shit enough to have proper technology transfer since buying into the company. All the crap about national interest is really a load bull. And please, the term lotus handling is just basically just a bunch of gwailo sitting inside the car and tuning what is already a mitsubishi based design.

Now this is what we're talking about. Finally some light is shed on what Lotus is all about particularly Lotus Engineering. The guy on the street would only know Lotus as the lightweight sportscar manufacturer and has no clue that Lotus Engineering does a whole lot of engineering consulting work for various automotive manufacturers globally.

Among them was the Nissan GTR project also the camshaft valvelift system used by Porsche which the german maker calls Variocam Plus. The valvelift mechanism is the same as you'd find in the Proton Campro CPS engine!

There are too many other manufacturers that Lotus have provided consultancy services to. Name any well known manufacturer and it is likely Lotus Engineering did some work for them. This is why Lotus should be appreciated more.

Great, more superb Lotus Technology. If CPS is anything to go by, it won't work as well as existing competitive systems but will cost a whole lot more to counterbalance the sub-par performance. But they got a patent so it must be good. The English are really good at re-inventing the wheel and then re-pricing it out of anyone's reach while they're at it. Old Blighty boleh!

since proton have lotus, joining the WRC, with this new tech of twin clutch transmission and the up coming cps turbo,

i think proton should develop a 'persona type R' / 'persona evolution' maybe just like the honda do with their civic and mitsubishi with their lancer evo…

this can be good for those dreaming to have a local supercar.

even the tata can 'pimp' their nano…

i think proton can do better right…

    manual = light weight
10 – 20 kg in lotus is essential, so … go manual …
