Audi shows off the compact A1′s headlamps

Audi’s new MINI competitor will feature a daytime running light system similar to the one found on all new Audi models recently.

The “eyeshadow”-shaped lights seem to have been refined over its first appearances – from what I can see in the video (as with the A8 too) it is now looks like a single solid line instead of noticeable individual LEDs forming a shape. The new “solid line” design is achieved using fiber optics combined with LED lighting, which enables Audi to create the smooth uninterrupted line.

Apparently the design is meant to resembled “wings of an eagle”, according to Audi at least. It is also meant to display “decisiveness and concentration” like an athlete all ready to go at the starting line with a sparkle in his eye.

Watch the video showcasing the headlamp design after the jump.

Lexus produced a new TV commercial for the 2010 Lexus GX 460 SUV based around the theme of “Every Action Hero Needs a Vehicle”. There’s even a bat signal shaped like a Lexus logo, but Batman is not the action hero in this case – apparently it’s a new heroine called Super Soccer Mom. You’ll get what I mean once you check the ad out.

MINI engines – new specifications for 2010

The MINI range of cars has some technical updates in the engine bay this year. First of all, it looks like the 1.4 litre Prince engine has been phased out in favor of detuned versions of the 1.6 litre engine in order to benefit from improved torque from the larger displacement. This is not really related to our market as the baseline MINI we get here is the Cooper.

The entry level MINI First gets a 1.6 litre normally aspirated engine making 75 horsepower and 140Nm of torque, while the MINI One’s new 1.6 litre engine now makes 98 horsepower and 153Nm at a low 3,000rpm. The 2010 range also adds a new MINI One Convertible, which shares the same engine.

No changes to the Cooper, but the Cooper S engine has had an update. Previous versions of the engine added direct injection but lacked the Valvetronic variable valve timing and lift system that the normally aspirated version had. This was the usual case with all BMW turbo engines until recently – because of complications in head design it was very hard to implement both Valvetronic and high pressure injection.

But since BMW has managed to do it with the new N55 turbo engine, it’s only a matter of time that the MINI’s turbocharged engine gets it and now it’s finally here. The new Valvetronic direct injection turbo engine makes an additional 9 horsepower – now peaking at 184 horsepower and a peak of 240Nm of torque (with 260Nm overboost) from as low as 1,600rpm.

MINI has also announced a new range of “Rainbow” paint options. You can either choose Sunlight Metallic, Asteroid Metallic or Nightlife Metallic. These shades use a water-based basecoat colour that produces a rainbow effect in bright sunlight.

New Nissan Sylphy Luxury Navi Package trim level adds in-dash GPS navigation system

Nissan Sylphy

The Nissan Sylphy is now available as a new variant called the “Luxury Navi Package” variant which includes an in-dash touchscreen GPS navigation and entertainment system. The system is the TCAT Multimedia Navigator System which boasts some interesting specs.

From doing a little research it appears that the system runs on the SpeedNavi SQ software, which was created by M&Soft, a Hyundai-related company. The touchscreen player uses a 7 inch truecolour touch screen with 800×480 resolution – that’s some pretty impressive resolution so text and graphics should appear quite crisp.

The GPS navigation’s mapping system includes 3D junction view and 2.5D building view for a better idea of exactly which junction you have to take. Maps have 15 zoom levels and are for both Malaysia and Singapore, while language options include English, BM, Cantonese, Mandarin, Thai, Japanese and Korean.

Other features include a reverse camera system with night vision compensation (which auto-engages during reverse), and an audio and video player which streams audio to the car’s 6-speaker audio system through an FM transmitter. Video and audio can be loaded through either an SD card or a USB data drive.

The Luxury Navi Package trim level is only a RM1,500 premium (RM120,380.00) over the Luxury package which I feel is quite good value. If you purchase the TCAT Multimedia Navigator system along with the reverse camera and etc on its own the RRP is RM3,500.

Something for the girls: Honda FREED Styling Study at Tokyo Auto Expo 2010

Honda FREED

This is another Honda concept destined for the Tokyo Auto Salon 2010 – and it’s a Honda Freed. This should be interesting for us Malaysians as it’s no secret that the Freed will be landing on our shores soon.

Honda FREED

There’s no Modulo name tagged onto this one, instead it is labelled a “design study”. It’s quite a feminine design, going beyond the pinkish paintjob. Check out the little butterfly and floral ‘tattoos’ around the body.

Look after the jump for hi-res pix of the modded Freed.

Honda Insight Sports Modulo concept set for Tokyo Auto Salon 2010 showcase

Honda Insight Sports Modulo

Among the tricked out sporty concepts that Honda will be displaying at the 2010 Tokyo Auto Salon is this Honda Insight Sports Modulo Concept. The theme for this Insight is basically “Exciting Eco”, which is a term I believe can also probably be applied to the new CR-Z, since that one actually has a manual transmission!

Honda Insight Sports Modulo

Other than the obvious bodykit bits, the Modulo concept kit for the Insight also includes components such as an A-pillar aero-form garnish, a new LED rear combination tail lamp, and air-split tail fin, and a rather interesting “quarter fin” for the wheels which you can see in the image above.

Look after the jump for a full hi-res gallery of the kitted Insight.
