Chrysler upgrades powertrain tech, courtesy of Fiat

American manufacturers have been lagging behind in powertrain development compared to their European counterparts, but as we just read about Ford’s aggresive catch up plans, US automakers realise that they need to deliver more efficient and economical drivetrains, or face seeing customers looking to Japan and Korea for their new cars.

The Chrysler Group is also on the same boat, but doesn’t need to self-develop thanks to its alliance with Fiat. The Pentastar has announced a powertrain revamp that will see overall fuel-efficiency improvement of over 25% from now till 2014. “Chrysler will attain leadership by rapidly applying Fiat Powertrain tech, such as Multiair, direct injection, turbocharging and transmission systems to its powertrain portfolio,” said Paolo Ferrero, Senior VP, Chrysler Powertrain.

Fiat will donate its 1.4-litre FIRE engine with Multiair, available in naturally aspirated and turbo form. Multiair emplys electro-hydraulic variable-valve actuation to deliver increase in power of up to 10%, improvement in low rpm torque of up to 15% and reduction in fuel consumption and emissions by 10%. The system has full control of the lift and timing of engine valves, independently on each cylinder and during each single engine stroke. The N/A engine has 100 bhp and 129 Nm while the turbo comes with 170 bhp/231 Nm.

Chrysler has also integrated Multiair into its 2.4-litre GEMA World Engine, boosting figures to 190 bhp and 237 Nm from the previous 172 bhp/223 Nm. A turbo version is under development.

Beginning with its D-segment cars, Chrysler will use Fiat’s six-speed Dual Dry Clutch Transmission, which delivers 10% better fuel efficiency. The ‘box can handle up to 350 Nm of torque.

Ford to launch nine new engines, six new transmissions at Detroit

Ford announced that it will introduce nine new or upgraded engines and six new transmissions at the 2010 Detroit show that starts later tonight (Malaysian time) as part of a five-year effort to overhaul its powertrain portfolio. The push began in 2008 and continues through 2013, where 60 new or significantly upgraded engines, transmissions and transaxles will be launched globally.

One of the Detroit debuts will be a normally aspirated 2.0-litre direct injection engine, the first of its kind for Ford in North America. It will be for the next-gen Focus, which should be uncovered as well. In 2010, Ford will launch new engines and transmissions in the Fiesta, Mustang, Super Duty and F-150, expected to propel each vehicle’s fuel economy to be best-in-class.

For instance, the Fiesta’s Ti-VCT 1.6-litre engine and PowerShift dual-clutch ‘box will deliver an estimated 14.2 km/l on the highway. The Mustang’s new 305 bhp, 3.7-litre V6 with six-speed auto will deliver at least 10.6 km/l on the highway. No other V6 powered sports coupe in the world delivers this level of performance and fuel economy, Ford says.

Another ongoing mission is to reduce drivetrain weight. Ford has also caught the downsizing bug too. By 2013, it plans to offer EcoBoost (Ford’s name for turbo) engines on 90% of its product lineup with annual volume of 1.3 million units globally. Now that doesn’t mean it’s going to be on 90% of all models, it just means its just going to be at least 1 engine option for 90% of its car models. According to Ford, current EcoBoost models are delivering up to 20% improvement in fuel economy and a 15% reduction in CO2 emissions versus bigger-cc engines.

Full list of new engines and gearboxes that will be launched after the jump.

Detroit 2010: Chevrolet Aveo RS Show Car

Damn, this Aveo RS destined for the Detroit floors when it opens in the USA our time tonight is pretty good looking, and its has a suitably equipped powertrain as well.

The Aveo usually has to make do with mundane engines putting out just over a 100 horses but for this Aveo RS, it gets a turbocharged 1.4 litre Ecotec engine making 138 horses and 200Nm of torque, the equivalent of a 2.0 litre normally aspirated engine. It’s mated to a 6-speed manual transmission in this car.

The reason GM developed the Aveo RS is so that it could show that it’s possible for B-segment cars to look good and convey excitement. Americans do not historically touch (relatively) tiny cars like these unless they absolutely have to, but these days even Detroit are pushing small cars, like this new Aveo and the new Ford Fiesta which was just launched in the US not too long ago.

Look after the jump for a full gallery of the Aveo RS.

Ford’s Detroit Electric and the Henry Ford Museum

Here we have it, the first photo of a production Detroit Electric EV on this blog. Only thing is this was made in 1914. This is the Detroit Electric Brougham and it was owned by Henry Ford’s wife.

Henry Ford actually bought this Detroit Electric for his wife because during that time, a Detroit Electric was pretty much considered a woman’s car. It was easier to start, quieter and cleaner than its combustion engine counterparts, putting it in favor of the urban women of that time. If you check out the photo gallery of the Detroit Electric car after the jump, you can even spot a little flower vase in the interior, so the Volkswagen New Beetle wasn’t the first with the idea!

I’m here in Michigan for the 2010 North American International Auto Show, also commonly referred to as the Detroit Auto Show. The show only starts on Monday so we had the opportunity to check out some of the nearby attractions such as the Henry Ford Museum near where we were staying in Dearborn, the hometown of Henry Ford and the HQ of the Ford Motor Company.

And as for the modern revived Detroit Electric – not sure when we’re going to see a production car from them. Look after the jump for more shots I snapped at the museum.

Proton employees show off “creative concepts” at its 2010 Family Day celebration

It was an early start for a Saturday morning, but I dragged myself out of bed to Proton’s Shah Alam factory to join in the national carmaker’s annual Family Day event; yesterday’s 2010 edition also kick off Proton’s silver jubilee 25th anniversary celebrations. They erected a seriously huge tent (more like an airplane hangar!) to house 18,000 staff and their families who packed the venue. The guest of honour was none other than the man who’s vision created Proton: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed accompanied by wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah.

No, there weren’t any sneak preview of the Persona facelift or new Waja that I had hoped to catch, but the event was anything but boring, thanks to the participants of Proton’s Invention and Innovation competition, an in-house inter-department contest where staff came up with “concept cars” using units that were destined for scrapping. It was very entertaining to say the least; there was a supercar, a shoe car, a caravan, a wooden sportscar, a Donald Duck inspired gullwing Saga and a space ship!

Check the gallery after the jump, but before firing the poison arrows, please do not take them too seriously – this is just a fun contest open to all Proton staff, not a prototype design shootout for the next production model. Enjoy!

Proton to participate in Geneva 2010 – world debut of new design language coming up?

In the last few days of the 2009, Proton styling department chief Azlan Othman revealed that an announcement would be made soon on the showcase of a new design direction and language for Proton Design. He mentioned that it would be a ‘worldwide announcement’, and I think Proton MD Datuk Syed Zainal has just given us a clue as to when this announcement is going to happen!

He revealed at Proton’s 2010 Family Day celebrations that Proton would be participating in the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March this year. Geneva is probably one of the most important non-American market motorshows out there along with the Frankfurt show, which is just a wee bit strange considering there are no Swiss automotive manufacturers.

A Geneva exhibit usually warrants something big to showcase to make it worth it so maybe… just maybe… perhaps what Azlan meant was that Proton could be showing an interesting concept car featuring future design language elements in it? Peugeot is also taking the same route, showcasing its Peugeot SR1 Concept there.

Other than that, DSZ also said that the Exora is due for a Middle Eastern market debut soon, and a consolidation process of its Shah Alam and Tanjung Malim plants are underway and scheduled to complete by the end of this year. No details have been revealed but in Proton’s current overcapacity state we might see Proton consolidate all manufacturing in one plant?

Until March then!

New Peugeot SR1 concept showcases new Pug design language and logo!

Peugeot SR1

Right now with the Detroit Motorshow coming up real soon, you’d think that the car manufacturers would be all about Detroit, but Peugeot is already setting up the stage for its more Euro-centric Geneva exhibit coming up soon. Understandably, as it has no North American presence whatsoever.

And Peugeot’s Geneva exhibit is a very important exhibit indeed, as the new Peugeot SR1 concept car will be shown to the public for the first time, a car which features Peugeot’s new design direction for the new decade!

New Peugeot LogoAnd there you have it. The huge wide mouthed grille is now gone, replaced by a slimmer and sleeker version. The car also features a restyled version of Peugeot’s logo, shown on the left. It’s a very good looking coupe indeed, and the hard top can be taken off for open top driving pleasure. Looks like some sort of a baby Aston Martin with an inverted grille.

Powering the SR1 concept is a combination of motors, producing a total of 313 horsepower peak output. It is a hybrid, using HYbrid4 technology that combined a 218 horsepower 1.6 litre THP turbo engine at the front and a rear electric motor (yes, all wheel drive) making 95 horses. The SR1 can also run on the electric motor alone, turning it into a zero emissions vehicle. Peugeot claims 57.7mpg on the Euro combined cycle.

The SR1′s chassis is built with a one piece body incorporating a tubular structure. The mechanical components and suspension bits are then mounted onto this tubular chassis. You get double wishbones with drop links at both front and rear, and there is also four-wheel steering using motorised links on the rear suspension wishbones to control the rear wheel angles.

Look after the jump for hi-res photos of the new SR1.

Govt to announce new “reasonable” toll rates

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak revealed to members of the media on Friday that the government is at the final stage of restructuring highway toll rates and that an official announcement will be made by the premier. “We are now in the final stage, and I will make an announcement,” he said.

The new toll rates “will reflect consumer interests and satisfaction as well as a high level of highway quality” according to the Prime Minister. He revealed to the members of the press during the opening ceremony of Persada Plus which is Plus Expressway Berhad’s main headquarters. Najib assured that the new toll rates will be reasonable but did hint that the rates may travel upwards.

“Additional lanes should be added to congested stretches immediately. As the cost, this can be negotiated with the government because we practise the principle of cost-sharing. The people will not mind if there is a slight increase in toll rates, provided traffic flow is smooth without any congestion,” were his exact words.

He also explained that the highway system plays an important role in the growth of a locality and new industrial sites. This will then give a positive impact to the economy. “I believe our highway system can spur a high level of economic growth because the movement of people, goods and services depends on a sophisticated and quality highway network,” he added. Unfortunately we can only guess when the announcement will be made. Thanks to Zali for the pointer!

Lotus F1 to make testing debut in Jerez next month

Here are some updates on the Lotus F1 Team. The Malaysian-backed outfit will join the final two F1 test sessions before the 2010 season starts in Bahrain. The race car is set to be driven for the first time at Jerez, Spain in mid February.

“We are actually a week ahead of schedule. When we got the entry on September 12, our schedule said we would fire up on February 12 – and we are now scheduled to fire up on February 5. After that, we will be at the second Jerez test and then the final one at Barcelona. That will be the first time the world will see the car in action,” chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne told Autosport.

Speaking on the development progress, he said: “We started wind-tunnel testing in October so by the time we are at the first race, we have had five or six months of wind tunnel testing. We have made pretty rapid progress, and if we can maintain that then we will be in pretty good shape come Barcelona mid-season – and that is really where you have to target where you’ve got to be.

“Now it is about where are you mid-season, where are you end of season, and I want to end the season beating Force Indias and Toro Rossos and whoever is struggling – maybe Saubers. I want to be picking them off,” said a bullish Gascoyne.
