E84 BMW X1 spotted in Putrajaya – launch very soon?

BMW X1 in Putrajaya

The new BMW X1 (E84 model code) should be launching here in Malaysia very very soon as you can already be seen around Malaysian roads if you just know where to look. Cyberjaya and Putrajaya are decent choices for a higher chance of getting to see it on the road.

An example is the photo above sent in by reader apexg2. The X1 was at JPJ Putrajaya, probably as part as of the Malaysian vehicle Type Approval process necessary for all CBU vehicles in Malaysia. The X1 will most likely be CBU, but who knows, if Malaysian buy them in decent volume like the 3 and the 5 it might become CKD?

I scoured various online classifieds for any indication of X1 prices and found RM26x,xxx for the sDrive18i and RM29x,xxx for the xDrive20d model. The sDrive model is rear wheel drive while the xDrive is all wheel drive. Malaysians looking for compact luxury SUVs have a new choice now other than the usual suspects of the Tiguan, Q5 and XC60.

Look after the jump for some material, videos and photos of the X1.

Ford and Geely reach definitive agreement over Volvo sale

Ford has entered into a definitive agreement to sell Volvo Car Corporation to Chinese carmaker Geely. The sale is expected to close in the third quarter of 2010, and is subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of applicable regulatory approvals. The purchase price for Volvo and related assets (mainly intellectual property) is US$1.8 billion.

Ford said that it will continue to cooperate with Volvo in several areas after the sale has been completed in order to ensure a smooth transition, but will not retain any ownership. Following completion of the sale, Ford will continue to supply Volvo Cars with powertrains, stampings and other vehicle components. The Detroit automaker is also committed to provide engineering support, information technology and access to tooling for common components, among other services for a “transition period to ensure a smooth separation process”.

Both parties have established agreements to govern the use of intellectual property, which will “allow both Volvo and Ford to deliver their business plans and provide appropriate safeguards against misuse”. The agreements are said to allow Volvo to grant sublicenses to certain portions of Ford’s intellectual property used by Volvo Cars to third parties, including Geely. Looks like Geely cannot simply pick off tech from the Volvo tree, even though they own it.

Stephen Odell, CEO of Volvo Cars, said: “The Volvo management team fully endorses Ford’s sale of Volvo Cars to Geely. We believe this is the right outcome for the business, and will provide Volvo Cars with the necessary resources, including the capital investment, to strengthen the business and to continue to move it forward in the future.

“Geely has been very supportive of Volvo Cars’ business plans and management team. We look forward to building a strong relationship between Volvo Cars and Geely, and to maintaining a strong relationship with Ford in those areas where we will continue to work together to ensure a smooth transition,” he added.

Nissan Patrol-based Infiniti QX56 leaked ahead of New York

Here are some leaked low-res images of the 2011 Infiniti QX56, which will make its debut at the New York Auto Show. The largest of Infiniti’s 4X4s is meant to be a rival to the Lexus LX, and is based on Nissan’s new Patrol that was unveiled in the Middle East last month.

The latest Patrol is powered by a 5.6-litre direct-injected V8 with 400 bhp and 550 Nm paired to a seven-speed automatic transmission, and it’s most likely that the QX56 will sport the same drivetrain. The Infiniti should also come with the Patrol’s Hydraulic Body Motion Control System, All Mode 4X4 system with four selectable presets, Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control. While the Patrol name conjures up images of UN peacekeeping forces in hostile terrain, the latest version is positioned upmarket – kit includes a new multi-screen DVD entertainment system and “curtain vents”.

Here, the designers fused Infiniti-style headlights, rear lights and the wavy rear window line into a big, boxy SUV. And while all these cues work well on the marque’s smaller “coupe style” crossovers, we think that this is one of the most awkward looking 4X4s on sale. The current QX isn’t pretty, but at least it looks consistent.

More images after the jump.

Hyundai to debut Sonata hybrid at New York show

Hyundai has released this teaser image of the Sonata hybrid that will be unwrapped at the New York Auto Show, which will open its doors to the press on 31st March. From it, we can tell that Hyundai’s first hybrid doesn’t share the same face with the regular Sonata. The wavy chrome grill is replaced by a big “gaping mouth” with a “winged” blue backed H logo above it, and the shape of the headlights and foglights are also unique. There are also snaky LED driving lamps residing inside the headlamp clusters.

Not much is revealed for now, but the Sonata hybrid is speculated by some to have a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine mated to a 40 bhp electric motor powered by lithium-polymer batteries supplied by LG Electronics. Apparently it will use a revised version of the Sonata’s six-speed automatic transmission, not a CVT. Stay tuned for more.

Lexus IS F gets LSD for 2010, laps Fuji two seconds faster!

Lexus UK has unveiled the 2010 spec Lexus IS F, which is claimed to have sharper handling, new tech updates and an all-white interior.

As announced at last year’s Frankfurt motor show, Lexus’ M3 rival gets a new limited slip differential, improving traction and stability in high-speed cornering. The Torsen unit handles the 505 Nm delivered by the IS F’s 5.0-litre V8 engine, automatically directing drive torque to the rear wheel with the most grip. Out-and-out performance is unchanged, with the IS F capable of 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and a limited top speed of 270 km/h. However, the LSD improves the car’s lap time around the Fuji International Speedway by a full two seconds.

The super saloon also ships with a new satellite navigation system powered by a 40GB hard disk drive, with full-map coverage across Europe. 10GB of the HDD’s capacity is dedicated to a “sound library” function. The IS F’s 14-speaker Mark Levinson 5.1 surround sound system has also been upgraded to receive DAB digital broadcasts and a USB port has been added.

The IS F can be ordered with a new white leather interior in place of the standard black and mesh-design 19-inch alloy wheels instead of the standard 10-spoke design. Both are no-cost options for the £55,995 car. More images after the jump.

Mixed feelings for Lotus Racing at the Australian GP

Malaysian owned Lotus Racing had a mixed weekend at yesterday’s Australian GP. Thanks to Heikki Kovalainen’s second finish in as many races (he finished 13th, two laps behind the race winner, but well ahead of HRT’s Karun Chandhok, the only other finisher among the new teams), Lotus is starting to cement its reputation as the team to beat in the rookie mini league. The downside was that teammate Jarno Trulli failed to make the start due to a hydraulics problem.

“Obviously a very disappointing start. Jarno had a hydraulic power pack fail on the grid, not something we’ve seen before and we couldn’t get it changed in time,” explained technical chief Mike Gascoyne. The Italian driver was also struck with misfortune in qualifying when his seat broke, but managed to bring the car home in 20th place.

“I guess we’ve got to have had some bad luck at some point and unfortunately it was today. I’m disappointed for Jarno, but Heikki did us proud – three places away from a point, and he was keeping pace with most of the other cars throughout the race. Maybe it would have been nice if three other cars had gone out so we could get a point, but, joking aside, it is good that at this stage of the season we’re already thinking about points. We’re in a nice position for Malaysia. We’re looking forward to going home, and really looking forward to giving our fans something to shout about,” said team principal Tony Fernandes.

After boring Bahrain, Albert Park and Melbourne’s dark skies served up a really exciting race, with plenty of gripping battles, mishaps and the “customary” Sebastian Vettel car failure while leading the race. Let’s hope that the Malaysian GP this weekend will be as good to watch, if not better. Will you make the trip to Sepang this year?

Jenson Button wins in Australia as Vettel retires with brake failure

Reigning World Champion Jenson Button emerged victorious at the 2010 Australian Grand Prix after starting from fourth position. Second place went to Renault’s Robert Kubica and the final podium position went to Felipe Massa in his scarlet Ferrari. Unlike the Bahrain GP which took place a fortnight ago the Australian race at the Albert Park street circuit was very entertaining due to rain and various other incidents. We also saw more overtaking moves compared to the Middle Eastern event.

Bahrain GP winner Fernando Alonso collected fourth place ahead of Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg and Button’s team mate Lewis Hamilton. Force India did very well today with Vitantonio Liuzzi’s seventh place. Rubens Barrichello of Williams, Mark Webber of Red Bull and finally 7 times World Champion Michael Schumacher rounded off the top ten for Mercedes.

Lotus’s Heikki Kovalainen and Hispania’s Karun Chandhok were the only ones from the new teams who crossed the finish line. The Finn finished in 13th place, two laps behind Button while Karun finished five laps behind in 14th. The rest including both the Virgin cars and Bruno Senna from Hispania retired. Jarno Trulli did not start the race as his car suffered from hydraulics failure.

The incident-filled race started in wet conditions and all cars were fitted with wet weather tires. As with previous Australian GP’s, the first corner on the first lap collected some prisoners. Fernando Alonso who started from third had a poor start and was hit by eventual race winner Button causing the Spaniard to spin. Alonso then hit Schumacher. Button managed to continue while Alonso dropped to the back of the grid.

Schumacher had to pit for a new front wing as well. The ‘Gullwing’ safety car was then deployed. Just seconds later Kamui Kobayashi of Sauber hit the barrier and subsequently collected Williams’ Nico Hulkenberg as well. Sebastien Buemi from Toro Rosso also went off and retired. As the race restarted Vettel, Massa, Webber, Kubica, Rosberg, Button, Hamilton, Sutil, Barrichello, Petrov made up the top ten.

Alonso restarted in 18th and Schumacher did so in 20th. As expected both Alonso and Schumacher went on to pass slower cars although the Ferrari driver had it easier. Schumacher tried to make a move on Virgin’s Glock but Glock took the position back. That was a very interesting overtaking move.

Button then pitted at the end of Lap 6 and was the first to use slicks. He came out and it was quite slippery for him but as the tires collected more heat, Button’s decision of switching to slicks proved to be a good one. Just a while later more cars pitted as Button set the fastest lap time. At Lap 12 it was still Vettel who was leading, followed by Button, Kubica, Rosberg, Massa, Webber, Hamilton, Barrichello, de la Rosa and Alonso.

Vettel was having a comfortable lead but unfortunately for the German, the brakes on his Red Bull failed and push him onto the gravel trap. That was the end of his race after scoring his second consecutive pole position yesterday. Button took over the lead ahead of Kubica, Hamilton and Rosberg.

Towards the closing stages of the race, it was Button, Kubica, Massa and Alonso who were at the top four. Hamilton and Webber, following their pit stops were closing in on both the Ferraris. Both Massa and Alonso opt not to pit and decided to stay on with worn tires. Hamilton and Webber, thanks to fresh tires closed up and started to pressure Alonso. In a surprising move, Webber hit the back of Hamilton and pushed both of them out of the battle for fourth place.

Hamilton got back on track but only managed to finish in sixth place. Webber had to pit for a new front wing and only managed ninth. In one week’s time the Formula 1 fraternity will gather again for the 2010 Malaysian Grand Prix and hopefully we won’t see a single red flag! Although today’s race was pretty exciting, imagine if it did not pour at the beginning. For now fans can only hope for more rain to add excitement into a grand prix

Alpina B7 BiTurbo ALLRAD set for 2010 New York Auto Show Debut

BMW USA’s top of the range BMW Alpina B7 will also be available with all-wheel drive to tackle American winters. There’s no M7 so the Alpina B7 is pretty much the sportiest F01/F02 you’re going to get.

It’s of course not the most powerful though, as that title goes to the 760i and 760Li with 544 horses and 750Nm of torque. The B7 makes do with 500 horses and 700Nm of torque, which is up from the standard 4.4 litre twin turbo V8 750i’s 400 horses.

The big Seven’s xDrive system actively manages torque between the front and rear wheels. The system actually recognises lateral acceleration above 0.5 m/s2 as and sport-oriented driving and increases the torque shifted to the rear wheels so you get that rear wheel drive BMW feel without sacrificing the benefits of all wheel drive when you actually need four wheel traction.

This is also not the first time Alpina has built a car with all-wheel drive, but it is the first B7 though, as previous generations of the 7-Series did not come with xDrive. Alpina can work wonders to your car but they can’t add driven wheels!

BMW files a series of interesting trademark registrations – is an M diesel on the way?

BMW TwinPower Turbo

A bunch of trademark registration filings by BMW has given us a glimpse of what could be coming up in the future. Here’s a full list:

M 50 d
Urbanic
Gran Coupe
Compactive
Compactive Tourer
i1
i2
i3
i4
i5
i6
i7
i8
i9
E1
E2
E3
E4
E5
E6
E7
E8
E9

The names with i probably versions of a new range of ‘isetta’ project i compact cars to compete in the premium city car category. The names with E could be either electric versions of the Project i cars or perhaps electric versions of existing models with “eDrive” (as opposed to sDrive or xDrive) powertrains. An E1 could be a 1-Series powered by eDrive, for example. This is all just speculative of course. Compactive is probably a portmanteau of Compact and Active, but it doesn’t sound very nice.

M 50 d sounds very interesting – are we looking at the BMW M division’s first turbodiesel car? They’ve already gone ahead and broken many other M ‘taboos’ already, and I did actually hear a source admit there’s a M diesel in the making sometime last year.
