What do you think of the new layout?

We’re trying out a new look over here and since this site would be nothing without you readers, we’d like to ask for some feedback. What do you think of the new design? We went for a 3 column layout to allow us to highlight certain content like the test drive reviews better while minimize scrolling.

There’s also a new comment feature where you can reply to a particular comment. No more copying and pasting the comment that you want to reply to. Hopefully this will result in cleaner and more meaningful conversations.

Most importantly, the new theme structure fixes a problem that the old theme had with WebKit browsers like Safari and Chrome. Please share what you think of the new layout – your feedback is very important to us!

UPDATE: OK, I’ve switched to a 2 column layout and tried my best to make it look like the old layout. Any feedback on this? I feel like a certain government, flip flop here and there!

I personally prefer 3 column but it seems I have overestimated the average monitor resolution of some readers, 3 column made the site too wide and caused left and right scrolling. How about this, is it better? Exactly the same 900 pixel width as the old layout, but with the Chrome and Safari fixes.

FIA looking into new Formula 1 diffuser loophole

Apparently the latest scandalous rumour to be going around the F1 circus circles are that certain Formula 1 teams have taken advantage of a loophole in the rules to design diffusers that help create better and more consistent downforce. This involves enlarging the hole in the diffuser for the starter motor to pass through.

Certain teams have intentionally used excesively larger starter motors so that they can make larger holes in their diffuser, thus getting them the intended aerodynamic benefit. Reports going around the net claim that the ‘diffusergate’ teams are McLaren, Mercedes, Renault and Force India, and that the FIA have ordered them to modify their diffuser designs.

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh confirmed in Bahrain last weekend that his team was one of the teams that are under investigation over the matter.”There are holes in the diffuser for the starter, the hole in ours is no bigger than the one on the championship winning car last year and also no bigger than it is on about four other cars,” he said.

There’s no real wrongdoing here – just a clever workaround the rules, but the FIA is said to be stepping in to get them to conform to realististic sizses ‘in the spirit of rules’. UPDATE: Apparently a note has been sent out clarifying the maximum starter hole dimensions allowed.

B-Class AMG not exactly a B-Class AMG?

F800 Concept

Apparently the B-Class AMG we talked about right below this story isn’t exactly going to be a B-Class AMG, according to a new story by Auto Express. What AMG will actually be doing is developing a compact “CLS lite” about 4,500mm long based on the next generation B-Class chassis. That’s just slightly shorter than an E90 BMW 3-Series.

The car is known internally in AMG as the C117 EVO and is expected to be priced around £30,000, much cheaper than the £50,000 C63 AMG. Although the earlier Automotive News report says the car is likely to have a high performance four cylinder engine, Auto Express reports that the car will be a “32″ AMG car, powered by a 3.2 litre Comprex pressure wave supercharged V6.

Is there market for a Mercedes-Benz B-Class AMG?

Mercedes-Benz has some seriously big plans for its next generation Mercedes-Benz B-Class. The tallish “mini MPV” front wheel drive B-Class is set to get a high performance AMG version with a tuned up four cylinder engine! There are of course many other pocket rockets in its segment such as the 135i, the Audi S3 and the Volkswagen Golf R, but the B-Class is the only ‘tall’ competitor.

Perhaps what AMG will do is slice its new 5.5 litre V8 bi-turbo in half and perhaps destroke it to get a nice turbocharged 2.8 litre engine. Right now the most powerful petrol-powered current generation Mercedes-Benz B-Class is the B200 Turbo, which makes 193 horsepower and 280Nm of torque which is just about near Golf GTI standards. Or a Brabus version will bump power up to 223 horses and 310Nm. A Brabus tuned up B200 CDI diesel will do 190 horses and 350Nm of torque.

Is there a market for a really fast B-Class? Is there is, you can be sure we’ll see a Volkswagen Golf Plus GTI accompanying the Golf GTI in the next generation! Whatever it is, the car is supposed to be released after the next generation B-Class’s debut in 2011.

VIDEO: New Alfa Romeo Giulietta Promo Released!

Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Here’s another promo video for the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta and this time they’ve made it a little more exciting than the first one we checked out back in January. With Sime Darby AutoconneXion really getting the ball rolling with new models here in Malaysia (I just saw the facelifted Range Rover on trucks today across the Federal Highway), there’s a good chance we may just see the Giulietta here in Malaysia by the end of the year to accompany the 159. Four turbo engines are available at launch – two turbo petrols (120 bhp 1.4TB and 170 bhp 1.4TB MultiAir) and two MultiJet turbodiesels (105 bhp 1.6 JTDM and 170 bhp 2.0 JTDM). All these powerplants come with a 6-speed manual gearbox, but a dual-clutch transmission will be coming soon as the automatic option – with this, we can finally bid farewell to Alfa’s frustrating Selespeed!

Anyway, enjoy the new promo video after the jump.

2006-2007 South Korean production Chevrolet Captivas recalled for steering wheel issue

Chevrolet Captiva

GM Daewoo has announced a recall of the Chevrolet Captiva and the Chevrolet Cruze – we’re talking about a total of nearly 60,000 units. Of that number, 45 957 are Captivas while 12,604 are Cruzes. The Cruze is being recalled to correct defective fuel hoses while the Captiva issue involves steering wheels that can become detached. Apparently the steering column and steering intermediate shaft on some Captivas were not fully connected. Daewoo said no accidents had resulted from any of the problems and the company itself elected to initiate the recall.

The Cruze is not sold here in Malaysia as of yet but we do have many Captivas running around our roads and a pretty healthy owner’s club membership. A Reuters report says the affected Captivas were produced between April 1, 2006 and Dec. 31, 2007. For the Cruze, it affects cars produced between Sept. 25, 2009 and March 2, 2010.

So far, the company is recalling the affected vehicles in South Korea. There are plans to start recalls in other markets. However what’s troubling is one particular statement given to Reuters, cited in their report. “GM plans to recall the models with the problems in other countries. But every country has different rules and standards and each GM operation will decide the size and timing of recalls of those cars depending on their own situations,” an anonymous GM Daewoo official told Reuters by telephone.

Something like a steering wheel that could detach definitely sounds quite serious and I think recalls should start ASAP instead of deciding the timing according to rules and regulations of respective countries? We don’t have any laws on recalls here in Malaysia and hence recalls are given a positive spin by PR departments with different names such as ‘Product Update’.

Even China has a recall law, and Shanghai General Motors have announced it will recall more than 2,000 imported Captivas. In line with China’s Regulation on Defective Auto Recall, Shanghai GM will recall all Captivas manufactured between September 18, 2007 and December 31, 2007.

Naza is the new distributor for Chevrolet here in Malaysia and it would do them really well if they start off with announcing a swift recall IF and I repeat IF any of our Captivas are affected. It would show that they’re serious about building the brand here in Malaysia and taking care of the existing customers. The Captiva was only launched in Malaysia in end November 2007 so it could be that only the first batch units are affected, as the rest of the CBU units would probably have been built after the 1st April 2006 to 31st of December 2007 affected production time range. UPDATE: According to an email from a GM official to MTM’s Chips Yap, it seems that the Chevrolet Captiva in Malaysia is NOT affected by the recall as it comes from GM Thailand and not GM South Korea.

First Ferrari 458 Italia in US raises $530,000 for Haiti

Ferrari has raised $601,000 for relief efforts in Haiti by the CMMB (Catholic Medical Mission Board) and the William J. Clinton Foundation. At the star studded gala event, the first Ferrari 458 Italia to arrive in America was auctioned off for $530,000. US prices for Maranello’s latest isn’t out yet, but it’s priced close to £170,000 in the UK, which translates to nearly $255,000, so the unnamed buyer “gave away” quite a bit for charity.

Hosted by Piero Ferrari, Deputy Chairman, Amedeo Felisa, worldwide CEO of Ferrari, and Marco Mattiacci, the newly appointed North America CEO, the party was attended by over 500 guests and Ferrari aficionados, including John Mayer, Jeremy Renner, Patrick Dempsey, Aaron Eckhart, Joel McHale, Malin Ackerman, Mollie Simms and Katie Cassidy.

Other things to go under the hammer was Fernando Alonso’s original racing suit (which raised $31,000) and two “experiences as a Scuderia Ferrari team member” at the Canadian Grand Prix in June, which went for $20,000 and $21,000.

It was also announced that the Department of Orthopedics and Hand Surgery of the University of Modena will make its knowledge and resources available to help CMMB in Haiti. A team of hand and microsurgery specialists, whose studies have been financed by Ferrari, will help out in the earthquake wrecked Caribbean nation.

Pictures after the jump. Click here for a video on the 458 Italia’s styling elements.

Nissan to open design studio in Beijing, China

With increasingly saturated domestic markets, the world’s major carmakers are flocking to developing markets such as China and India, where car ownership figures still have plenty of room to grow. It therefore makes sense to have a base in these countries, to design, modify and manufacture cars according to local tastes. GM-SAIC’s PATAC facility on the outskirts of Shanghai is a great example of this – initially a “rebadging centre”, it’s now capable of full vehicle development (Chevrolet Sail) and even concept cars (Buick Business Concept).

Now, Nissan has announced that it will establish a design studio in Beijing. Scheduled to open early 2011 in the Chao Yang district, it will be the first design facility in China by a Japanese automaker. The studio will be part of Nissan’s global network of design centers, which includes two facilities in Japan (Atsugi and Harajuku), one in America (San Diego) and one in London, UK. Nissan’s Chinese subsidiary will invest RMB 11.76 million (US$ 1.7 million) to set it up.

“With the addition of 20 designers, Nissan’s new studio will enhance our design capabilities, as well as our product competitiveness in China and Asia where the automotive industry continues to see robust growth,” said Shiro Nakamura, Nissan’s chief creative officer and senior vice president of design.

“Locating the studio where our customers live and work allows us to best respond to their needs and design vehicles that exceed their expectations.” Nakamura-san also added that the Chinese capital’s expanding design community made it a “natural choice” over rival cities such as Shanghai.

Williams trying to lure Volkswagen into F1?

Is Williams trying to do a Brawn GP and sell the team to a manufacturer? Well, according to Autocar, which quotes German publication Bild, boss Frank Williams is dangling his F1 team in front of the Volkswagen Group, which is expected to enter the pinnacle of motor racing from 2013. Williams used to partner BMW before Munich bought into Sauber and currently uses Cosworth engines.

“We are stronger with a manufacturer than as a private team,” Williams told Bild. “No question. And of course we have an affinity with Germany. I remember well, quite early on, we went to the races with VW buses – we sometimes even slept in them. German cars are great. With Mercedes, Brawn won the title last year, and with McLaren in the previous year. And now they are up there with their own team.”

According to Bild, Williams, who sold a 20% stake in his team to Austrian investor and race driver Toto Wolff late last year, could sell his remaining stake to VW if Wolfsburg decides to enter the sport. VW’s motorsport chief Kris Nissen is said to want F1 to improve its image, drive down costs and improve its stability before the group commits itself. He was also quoted before saying that VW will continue to concentrate on its successful Dakar Rally programme for at least two more years. VW is currently the team to beat in Dakar after winning back-to-back editions since the race moved to South America.

VW’s involvement in single seater racing is currently limited to Formula 3 racing. It supplies 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines to teams in the Formula 3 Euro Series, ATS Formula 3 Cup and the British Formula 3 Championship.

No racing future for McLaren MP4-12C?

Looks every bit the race car, doesn’t it? But McLaren boss Ron Dennis has ruled out the company fielding a factory team to race its new MP4-12C supercar, according to Autosport.

“We don’t have plans to race it, but we do recognise that some of our customers will want to race this car,” Dennis said. “At the appropriate time we will form a department to service that – but thoughts on a factory team entering any series are premature.”

Wouldn’t it be good to see McLaren’s finest wing-to-wing with the likes of Maserati’s MC12 and the Ford GT in the FIA GT1 championship, or even a try at Le Mans, where the McLaren F1 GTR won in 1995. For now, we’ll have to make do with some amazing renderings from talented digital artist Jon Sibal. Here, Sibal created a “GTR variant” of the MP4-12C in colours that pay homage to the original F1 GTR liveries.

Check them out after the jump!
