Broadband has changed alot of things with the online scene here in Malaysia. Without broadband, websites such as this simply would not exist. People would continue to refer to magazines and the auto pullouts in newspapers as surfing for car news (or rather ANYTHING) online on 56k dial-up modems would be a seriously draggy experience.
I remember in the 90s, building a website involved making everything as small and fast loading as possible. Images had to be highly compressed, resulting in reduced clarity. It was insane to wait for a high resolution wallpaper of a really nice car to load. And internet was charged by the minute! I was paying far more back in the 90s for internet access than what I am paying now.Now we can have high resolution photos and even video streaming, which are regular content features over here at this blog. Our ‘sister publication or rather TV show’ Driven can also be streamed online in case you missed an episode on 8TV.
And then came mobile broadband. Which was slow, but when 3G came along true comfortably speedy mobile broadband was a reality. And this completely changed the experience of people like us whose job involved reporting fast and accurately. After a car launch, both Danny and I can immediately head to the nearest cafe preferably with a power socket, hook up our 3G broadband dongle and upload the news.
Basically broadband has encouraged online content consumption and we have broadband to thank for this site even existing. If you would like to get your own 3G mobile broadband, you can check out the PC Fair this weekend. Ah… it’s an advert post. I thought why suddenly you were reminiscing the good ol’ days.
Bloggers have to eat too!
bmw is better than celcom
i would repaint the car if i win it…hehehe
Internet here is like our car industry… So it’s relevant!
Sorry Paul but our jaguh kampung so called broadband is best effort only broadband. Plus we’re over paying for our jaguh kampung services.
All ISP consumer services are best-effort. Wherever you go in the world. The difference is the CR-contention ratio. :) And when it comes to CR, TM is on par with the rest of the world. The issue is actually the international BW available. It costs more for M’sia to buy international BW because we’re a very lopsided content consumer. The US/UK/Japan/Europe are nett producers i.e. most of the data resides on their own regional clouds. Hence for the majority of data being dld, it already is in their own network. Little additional cost. In fact, nett content consumers like us actually have to pay them for access to their networks (i.e. international peering costs).
Additionally much of the copper infra (fixed line) was built in the 80’s … copper deterioration in the M’sian network is a significant problem. The only way to go is to rip up all that old stuff and replace it.. a very very costly proposition. That means alot of capex and opex is involved. Definitely dollar for dollar M’sian opex can be lower but for capex, it would be on par with international costs since most telco equipment manufacturer’s are foreign.
Just my own 2 cents frm someone who works in a telco environment….
Wah Mr Paul is getting richer, Telecom also advertise with you ah !!! I am a streamyx subscriber anyway ….
advert pula
takpe la… unless YOU want to sponsor Paul’s server?
Anyway Paul, I think you should at least put ADV in the title to let readers know that this post is advertorial
hah? 1st prize a 2nd hand car?
is this celcom broadband only for mobile broadband only? Or they also have broadband for normal pc..
Hopefully in future there will be more company providing broadband service other than Streamyx in order to prevent their monopolization which gives poor performance in certain area.
p1 wimax, amax wimax, u mobile bb, maxis bb, jaring, izzi, time bb, e-ytl wimax,…..
whats with the passat?
Aiyor like that P1 can close shop..
POTONG HERE POTONG THERE
Now kena kau kau … so quiet oledi
they currently..nego with korea wimax provider to buy 20% stake…..n they do alot of maintainance lately…maybe they wan to upgrade..im one of their customer…..still they cannot compete with maxis bb…i use both….maxis still the best for me..very fast loading n streaming only downside is low capping (3gb for rm88/7.2mbps) n low upload…p1 wimax…good capping (20gb for rm99/1.2mbps) n best upload…slow download n streaming
y ur 3gb package is rm88? mine is rm58 only…
yup…but unlimited not like new package which will be block after 3gb…
naaaaah…..I have use celcom basic boardband RM68 near 2 years…and I wanna said…it juz suuucs, super slow speed, even lag while watching non HD youtube
…i hav no choice to choose it bcoz i need a protable boardband.
I call to the customer service centre and complain abt the the download speed was too slow (maximum 120kb per/s during buffering pps video, and after i try the Wimax i juz realize how the speed should be wif this kind of range, max near 380kbs during buffering video and more cheaper/RM49)
and they said ” YES THE SPEED IS JUST LIKE THAT, IS LUCKILY ALREADY U GOT THIS KIND OF SPEED!” wat a funny reason……
Luckily….finally…i surrender…..i dowan this lousy service annoying me anymore….i just kick off the celcom…..& wait for Wimax …hopefully got coverage at my side…..=.=”
lol, its kinda hard to do one way ads on a blog isn’t it. Its simply too much first hand opinion.
So if Celcom is reading this, and they should, allow me to voice a little bit about your ads:
– the Leehom ads is fine, just you can reduce 2.5 secs of the girl having facial seizure would do the things even better, we get the point.
– the teddy bear hand big present is so so, big present, but does not give any wow factor compare to others telco ads, it is just a tora-datang-lagi plain ads.
– you should do better in the blue eye girl ads, a fake blue eyes with black hair is already so alien, furthermore, the really sad and poker-face facial expression really spoil my appetite. Come on, you can afford leehom, get a prettier girl or at least dont show a sleepy eye.
Did I went off topic? Thanks for sponsoring paultan.org btw… :D
WTH come on u use basic bb celcom only 384kbps oledi that slow bro..u need at least 600kbps to stream HD thingy effortlessly…but i suggest u maxis bb upper package not cheap one
…ya…one more thing…if u don need a portable boardband… my advice is __pls juz choose back streamyx , walaupun always putus….it much more better than the celcom, no download usage limit, oh yeah…this stupid 68 basic celcom(oso the maxis) only got 3gb usage…not enough for download a hd movie oso>-<……..so pity……
Sadly, but true. Our wireless internet service is so half cooked.
Especially when Streamyx is so pandan muka till they put large bill board next their HQ saying that the MOST TRUSTED BROADBAND by 1.5 million users. Everyone taking Putra LRT, and every federal highway traffic jam drivers can see that everyday.
A sad ads, and a slap on their own face, after all these years, they only manage do achieve a pathetic 5% coverage of our 28 million rakyat. And still have the guts to shout about it.
y u use cheap package….use la upper package but costly la
you should put wording “ADV:” inside the title.
macam cilako myvi tu…sapela yang nak
celcom is the best!!
Celcom has not did any good job in attracting new customers, as well as in keeping the old and faithful one.
I switched to M. And my father who still using Celcom is very unhappy with their suka-suka-tidak-layan customer service. Sabah is used to be Celcom stronghold, not too sure about it now.
I hate celcom! that’s y I just canceled it and switch to another operator
why should myvi paint like dat? why not the VW?
Recently i bought this broadband from Celcom..the salesman tell me that its good laa, fast laa, that laa this laa.. then the end of the day.. sorry to mention here, its damn damn slow, even sometime just to open a yahoo page or this simple Google page…what the hell is that? My house is in the city, my handphone is full bar.. if it is because of data transfer.. its almost of the time nearly 0%.. how i want to change to advance, if the basic even cannot download the data.. If there is Celcom man here, any ideas of this? Please enlighten me
IMHO, there are many factors to consider here as broadband is sharing data usage..it depends on the location if theres many ppl at 1 place, they shud share the bandwidth..if 1 loc only 1 user, for sure faster like hell..celcom is slowest bcoz there are many subscribers compared to others..tgk mcm p1,dlu bkn main iklan tp bila dh rmai pkai, senyap je.sebab dh slow…i heard celcom have widest bandwidth than others telco itself…
At approx 6pm today, Streamyx broadband crashed throughout the whole of M’sia. No reason given by TM but they have admitted this outage.
Another sterling example of M’sia Boleh.
Good job TM. Your monopoly of the international telecommunication submarine cable has allowed you to become complacent.
Wow.. thanks for the news.. I thought it was something to do with my computer, it’s so slow with streamyx now.. well, going to on my backup maxis broadband.. XD
i tot submarine cable is sharing bet 19 company
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AAG_%28cable_system%29
Read the wikipedia again, this time s-l-o-w-l-y. Only TM from BodohLand participated in the AAG cable. That means ALL BodohLand’s overseas internet have to go through TM gateway, irrespective if you are using jaring / celcom/ maxis/ digi/ streamyx.
Isnt that what is called a monopoly?
Till today (17th), TM has yet to mention what went wrong. If this outage only affects BodohLand, then it’s probably the gateway (which is monopolised by TM). Had it been a submarine cable issue, other Asian countries would have been affected.
its the mistake of other IP provider in malaysia who don involve
then y when TM is down n other provider not affect by TM prob
I don’t think the submarine cable’s is monopolized by only TM. Now with so many earthquakes going on those submarine cables are prone to breaking I must say.
The issue was with a change in network parameters not any physical connectivity issues and it was purely internal. The Malaysian internet fabric was temporarily disrupted but restoration was within the hour.
why so ugly?
i can’t find driven website.help anyone?
Why Celcom wasted their money doing such a lousy paint job??? Can’t they make it a bit more classy so that the winner will keep the paint work after he/she drive it home????
Secondhand value might be even worst…
shitmyx 512kbps:
-in a month, there will be a few days which i cant connect, WTF!!!
shitmyx 4mbps:
-same problem as 512kbps, and even worse, sometimes continuous few days cannot connect!!!
shitcom 384kbps:
-extremely bad coverage in certain places, especially those area with lots of shitcom users, and somemore gotta pay rm68/month for mere 384kbps from dinosaur era, biggest joke in the world!!! but i’ve tried in places like Kota Bharu and Tanah Rata, surprisingly good coverage, but place like Wangsa Maju Sect-2 is like SHIT!!!
maxshit 3.6mbps:
-only able to get half of that, and coverage is much worse than shitcom!!!
I don’t even mind about the competition. The price (MyVI) look very-very ugly.
fugly designed car and motorbike.
sorry but no sorry.
I think they better spend that money on the better facility.
the current connection are rubbish!
Please put ADV in the title. I am sure still support you one by come and see see what is going on.
when it come to bb…. not only celcom laa got complain… p1, maxis, streamyx, digi all got complains one…. streamyx got complain becoz, out of all, thats the best available.. unless if willing to subscribe to 32MB dedicated fibre optic that data center normally use.. can download avatar movie within minutes only.
malaysians internetworking are rubbish!
Agree! Really! Our neighbour SG already reach 2GB/bps, somemore not expensive like here!!!
singapore is so big as compare to bolehland……
It happened again at approx 3.30 pm yesterday (19th). This time can only re-log in after 7.00pm.
When you call 100 to lodge a complain, they’ll tell you that their system is also down & cant check anything. The girl even had the cheek to ask if my modem was plug in correctly. When I asked is it the same problem as last week’s nation wide disruption, she hesitated before answering the standard M’sian answer “Dunno”.
TM Boleh. Satu Lagi Projek Jaguh Kampung
