Infiniti G series to use Mercedes-Benz CGI engines

As part of the just sealed partnership between Renault-Nissan and Daimler, the German company will provide Infiniti (Nissan’s luxury arm) with engines. And according to Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co, Infiniti’s smallest G series will use Mercedes inline four-cylinder engines to improve fuel economy and cut emissions – the powerplant in question is likely to be Merc’s latest direct-injection turbocharged CGI engines, which can be had here in Malaysia with the C and E-Class.

Ghosn didn’t give any timeline or if the Mercedes engine will entirely phase out the current 328 bhp 3.7-litre V6 used in the G range, which most testers have given the thumbs up to. Sweet it may be, but carmakers are increasingly being pressured to lower emissions of their range, and putting a small four-pot in its volume seller will help Infiniti greatly in this matter. But it remains to be seen if US customers who are used to a minimum of six cylinders in this segment will bite – Mercedes itself doesn’t use four-cylinder engines in the US; the smallest engine in the C-Class is a 3.0-litre V6.

Even America is not spared from the downsizing wave. The big V8s will still be needed, but the V6s will be slowly replaced by high output four pots. Hyundai-Kia will also not have V6s in their latest Sonata and Optima/Magentis, using instead the 2.0-litre Theta II turbocharged GDI engine, which puts out 274 bhp and 375 Nm.

Hyundai and Kia break UK sales records in March

These days, if it’s a story on sales figures, it has to be from the Koreans. This time its Hyundai in the UK. The on-form marque achieved a personal best by selling 15,241 cars in March, beating the previous monthly record of 11,031 set in September 2009.

Tony Whitehorn, Hyundai UK’s managing director puts the achievement into perspective. “This sales total is remarkable considering that we sold 28,036 cars in the whole of 2008. We have now sold more than half that figure in just one month!”

And while the company did very well in 2009 thanks to the UK Government’s scrappage scheme which took £2,000 off list prices, only one in three of the March registrations were to scrappage customers. “Many industry observers have viewed the enormous success Hyundai has had with scrappage and assume that our sales will collapse once the scheme ends. These figures prove that Hyundai has built up a strong following and its success will continue long into the future,” Whitehorn added.

Best seller in the month was the i10 with 6,195 units, followed by the i30 with 4,584 and the i20 with 3,570. The new ix35 crossover (Tucson in our market) scored 500 orders in the first two weeks it went on sale.

UPDATE: Sister brand Kia has just released its March UK figures. It sold 12,277 units, the company’s best ever month since setting up shop in the UK. Once again, small cars lead the charge, with the Picanto doing 7,720 units.

Aston Martin will compete at the Nürburgring 24-hour race on 15-16 May with the marque’s new four-door sports car, the Rapide. This will be Gaydon’s fifth consecutive year racing at the famous Nordschleife circuit after previously campaigning the V8 Vantage and V12 Vantage.

Aston’s decision to use the Rapide is to “underline the sporting credentials” of its four-door car. The Rapide will compete in “near-standard specification” apart from mandatory changes required to compete in the endurance race such as safety mods, interior trim removed to reduce weight, retuned suspension and slick tyres. No star drivers either; the Rapide will be driven by a team of Aston engineers lead by Aston Martin CEO, Dr Ulrich Bez.

He explained: “This race represents the ultimate final engineering durability test for any sports car – it subjects the car to the toughest possible assessment under public scrutiny. The Rapide has the capability to carry four people in comfort but first and foremost it is a sports car and we will subject it to the same tests we would our other sports cars.”

The 470 bhp 5.9-litre V12 Rapide will be joined by a similarly lightly modified V12 Vantage which won the SP8 class last year on its competitive race debut, finishiing 21st place overall. Porsche GT3s have won the event since 2006.

FIA bans ride height control systems in Formula 1

World motor sport governing body the FIA has announced that any form of ride height control system is illegal in Formula 1. The announcement came after rumors surfaced in the paddock which suggested that the Red Bull team was using such a device in its RB6 Formula 1 car.

Apparently the device would enable a car to run closer to the ground during qualifying which helps improve downforce. With this year’s ban of mid-race refueling and the fact that the cars will have to be in “parc ferme” between after qualifying and before the race (during a “parc ferme”, mechanics are not allowed to work on the car), such a device can be very helpful.

For example, a car will run light during qualifying (with low fuel) and run closer to the ground to help improve downforce, hence generate a quicker lap time. After qualifying, the car will be fueled to the brim for Sunday’s race. This will make the car heavier and the ride height will be reduced further, to a level which is too low. To counter this, the ride height control system will give more clearance.

Red Bull’s boss Christian Horner recently revealed that the team is not running such a system. Ride height control devices in Formula 1 were actually pioneered by the Lotus team (not this year’s entrant) and Williams also used it. It was then banned in 1993. Now that the FIA is clear about this matter, it will be interesting to look at Red Bull’s qualifying performance at the Chinese Grand Prix.

Italian team Durango bidding for F1 spot vacated by USF1

Of the new teams that applied to join Formula 1, only USF1 didn’t make the starting grid (Hispania, Virgin and Malaysia’s Lotus Racing are the three rookie outfits currently racing), and the FIA has invited applications to take the entry left vacant by the collapse of the American Dream, and will announce the result by July.

Italian former GP2 team Durango has thrown their name into the hat. Durango dropped out of GP2 at the end of last year due to financial problems, which makes one wonder how they are going to survive in F1. But Durango’s founder and team boss Ivone Pinton said the team’s new investors preferred the glitz, glamour and profile of F1 compared to its feeder series.

“After all the wrong things happened last season we tried our best to look for new partners in our racing activity. It did not take too long to understand that the interest could be aroused just about Formula 1 and nothing else. So we pushed towards this direction and I can say that, to enter F1, we can now enjoy the backing of two very big international groups,” he said.

Prior to running in GP2, Durango competed in Formula 3000. Among the drivers who have raced under its banner are Formula 1 new boys Karun Chandhok and Lucas di Grassi. Why won’t the FIA let the very well prepared and ready to race Stefan GP stand in for USF1 is anyone’s guess.

Barack Obama wants hybrid limo, Secret Service says NO!

Contrary to what many people think, the President of the United States of America doesn’t always get what he wants. ABC News reports that Barack Obama wants to go green by having hybrid power in his motorcade, but his wish is being denied with a sharp NO by the Secret Service.

The US President said that security reasons was why his presidential limousine could not be a hybrid vehicle. “I asked can we make these cars hybrids,” Obama said at a town hall in Charlotte, North Carolina. “Secret Service said no. Now, the reason is not because Secret Service are bad guys. It’s because the cars that I’m in are like tanks.”

Obama explained that his Cadillac, nicknamed “the beast” for being big and black, is reinforced with armour plating and a host of protection gear, causing it weighs over two times the normal weight of cars. “They just couldn’t get the performance in terms of acceleration using a hybrid engine.”

The US Government recently announced that they have purchased more than 5,000 hybrid cars and trucks. “We are using our purchasing power to help encourage the clean car industry,” the Commander-in-Chief said.

New engine and minor visual tweaks for Audi TT

Audi has given its popular TT range a refresh which consists of a new engine and subtle tweaks to the looks. This comes as Peugeot starts sales of its RCZ coupe, which made the journey from concept to production unmolested. We’ll get to drive the French hottie soon, but for now let’s focus on the TT’s new goodies.

Nothing too much to alter the instantly recognisable design. Up front is a new bumper that frames larger air inlets with “three-dimensional” edges. The fog lights now have chrome rings and the lattice of the single-frame grille is in high-gloss black.

Twelve white LEDs in a straight line serve as the daytime running lights. At the back, the “floating” reflectors of the tail lights add visual depth and the larger, flat black diffuser is matched by larger pipes. These changes have added 2 cm to the TT (now 4,187 mm). Four new metallic colours have been added.

Inside, Audi has merely played around with the trim – some silver here, some high-gloss black there. The aluminium strip above the glove box door is now in brushed grey. There are three new interior colours to choose from – nougat brown, titanium gray and garnet red. Leather seat covers are treated to reduce thermal heating by as much as 20 degrees Celsius when the TT is parked in the sun, useful for us in Malaysia.

New to the lineup is the 2.0 TFSI with 211 bhp, which replaces the 200 bhp version of the same engine and the 3.2 FSI. Torque is rated at 350 Nm, which is a big 70 Nm more than the previous TFSI. These new stats also put the TT well clear of the top RCZ, which 1.6 THP engine puts out 200 bhp/255 Nm. The turbocharged and direct fuel injected engine features Audi valvelift system (AVS) which adjusts the lift of the exhaust valves in two stages depending on need. Paired to the dual clutch six-speed S tronic and quattro AWD, 0-100 km/h takes only 5.6 seconds.

The other engines are a 1.8 TFSI with 160 bhp/250 Nm and a 2.0 TDI with 170 bhp/350 Nm. Opt for the diesel and you’ll be rewarded by 18.9 km/l combined consumption. Available as an option on all variants is Audi’s magnetic ride shock absorber system together with a Sport button that allows the driver to control servo boost for the steering and the engine sound in two stages.

Renault-Nissan-Daimler cooperation sealed and explained!

Details of Renault-Nissan’s partnership with Daimler AG have been revealed. The tie-up involves a symbolic stake exchange of 3.1%, which is basically a series of stake exchanges. Daimler will get 3.1% of Renault’s newly issued shares, Daimler will get 3.1% of Nissan shares that Renault current holds, and Renault will get 3.1% of Daimler shares. Renault has agreed to exchange 1.55% of Daimler shares with Nissan for 2% of Nissan shares. Renault and Nissan will each hold 1.55% of Daimler treasury shares.

The press release issued by the two companies also details exactly what the companies will work together on:

  • The companies will work on the next generation smart fortwo and Renault Twingo platform and engines together and there will be EV versions. These cars will be launched sometime from 2013 onwards. Two seater versions will be made in smart’s plant in France while four-seater versions will be made in Renault’s plant in Slovenia.
  • As per above, Renault-Nissan will provide 3 cylinder and 4 cylinder small engines to Daimler, modified to suit Mercedes-Benz characteristics. Expect the next generation A-Class as well as the smarts to use Renault-Nissan engines..
  • Daimler will supply Nissan’s Infiniti luxury car division with gasoline and diesel inline-4 and V6 engines. This will allow Renault-Nissan to focus on small engine development which make up the bulk of their vehicles.
  • The Mercedes-Benz Vito will get a Renault-Nissan diesel engine and transmission. This could be the inline-4 and the V6 found in the Pathfinder/Navara.
  • The three companies will also collaborate on future petrol and diesel engine.

BMW X1 launched: RM300K for xDrive20d, petrol in June

BMW Malaysia has just pulled the wraps off its smallest X model, the X1 this morning. Billed as a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) by its maker, the X1 will be sold here with two engine options: one diesel, one petrol. Only the xDrive20d diesel model is available for now; the sDrive18i petrol will reach our shores in June.

The X1 is a compact SUV that slots below the X3, which will still be on sale. With length and width of 4,454 mm and 1,798 mm respectively, the X1 actually has a smaller footprint than a Honda CR-V. It doesn’t look that compact in the metal though, and Munich’s baby SUV has a pretty long wheelbase of 2,760 mm. That figure is similar to the 3-Series, which it shares a platform with.

The xDrive20d model uses the same drivetrain as the 320d that was launched here last year, which means you’ll get a 2.0-litre commonrail turbodiesel with 177 bhp and 350 Nm of torque delivered from 1,750 rpm to 3,000 rpm, paired to a six-speed automatic. 0-100 km/h is done in 8.6 seconds and maximum velocity is 205 km/h. Combined fuel consumption of 15.4 km/l and CO2 output of 170 g/km leads BMW Malaysia to say that this X1 is the most eco-conscious in the segment. There’s more weight to carry than the 320d (which manages 16.7 km/l) but it will still save you a lot of fuel money compared to petrol powered rivals.

The not yet available sDrive18i pales in comparison. Its 2.0-litre N46 engine pushes out 150 bhp and 200 Nm of torque for 0-100 km/h in 10.4 seconds and a 200 km/h top speed. Claimed fuel consumption is 11.9 km/l. This petrol version is rear-wheel drive only, as opposed to the diesel’s four driven wheels (notice the S and the X in the name). Unlike some other 4WD systems, xDrive can channel up to 100% of drive to either axle. It works together with DSC (which lumps in ABS, Dynamic Brake Control, Cornering Brake Control and Dynamic Traction Control) which can cut torque and brake individual wheels.

The X1 xDrive20d is priced at RM299,800 while the sDrive18i will cost RM263,800. Prices for both CBU cars are on the road inclusive of three-year BMW Service + Repair Inclusive package. Click here for a video and gallery of the X1. Live images from this morning’s event are after the jump.
