Novitec remembers the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, and tunes it!

The 612 Scaglietti is not a very popular member of the Ferrari family. More often than not, the big grand tourer is eclipsed by its prettier, sexier and nimbler sisters. Those shopping for a Ferrari are also likely to already have a “family car”. But famous Ferrari tuner hasn’t forgotten the 612, and has released a tuning package for the successor of the 456.

The 5.8-litre V12 engine gets a horsepower bump to 565 bhp from 530 bhp. Torque has increased to 609 Nm from 588 Nm. These new figures are achieved with the help of a “specially calibrated engine management system” along with Novitec’s high performance exhaust system. This means the Scaglietti’s 0 to 100 km/h time is down to just 3.9 seconds and top speed is 325 km/h.

Other additions include a new taillight design and a new tyre/wheel combination – 275/30 ZR 20 up front and 355/25 R 21 rears. Inside, one can customise the seats to their heart’s content. Leather seats can be custom tailored to body measurements and even the addition of lateral support and lowered seat positions for tall drivers can be done. Customers can go as far as choosing the thickness and material of their steering wheel. Like many supercars today, the steering will be flat-bottomed.

Novitec Rosso has an authorised dealer in Malaysia, Iktikad Raya Sdn Bhd, which brought in the Novitec tuned F430. We’re sure they’ll be happy to specially import one of these in for you.

Proton to announce Volkswagen tie-up talks results in 1 to 2 weeks, posts profit for FY2009/10

Proton 25th Anniversary

When Proton first announced that it was not proceeding with a supposedly finalized tie-up with Volkswagen quite some time ago, to be honest I had abandoned hope in such a tie-up happening.

But that feeling stayed only for a moment as over the past few Proton events between then and now, the responses from Proton management especially Datuk Syed Zainal when answering questions from the media regarding the revival of such a tie-up seemed to say no comment officially but somehow you just had the feeling that Proton was up to something exciting when you looked at the good Datuk’s facial expression.

And then last night at its AGM where it announced its latest financial numbers, the chairman confirmed it – Proton and Volkswagen is indeed in talks and an outcome of what is being discussed would be announced in two weeks time. He declined to mention any specifics for now, saying he prefers not to jump the gun, so we don’t know if its something like a contract assembly agreement or perhaps something larger involving an equity tie-up or a technical collaboration.

We suspected that something was going on – while going in and out of the Proton COE HQ in Shah Alam to pick up cars for our Driven shoot in the past few months, we’ve seen visiting Touaregs parked near the higher management parking a few times and had a feeling it was perhaps Volkswagen officials over for a visit.

Proton CEO Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin also revealed that Proton is expected to launch a new model around October or November 2010. This is quite interesting actually as Datuk Syed Zainal said the new model will contribute significantly to Proton’s ability to further increase market share both at home and in export markets. If it is in fact a rebadged Mitsubishi, this means we also have export rights for the car.

At its AGM earlier this week, Proton posted a consolidated profit before tax of RM285 million for the financial year ending 31st March 2010, an improvement of over 150% compared to the last financial year’s RM319 million loss. It reported an increase in domestic sales volume of 8%, despite a 2% vehicle sales volume (TIV) contraction. Cumulative revenue was RM8.23 billion – a 27% increase over the RM6.49 billion posted in the previous financial year. Proton attributes this improvement to encouraging sales of the Saga, Persona and the Exora, which are Proton’s three core models.

Hulme CanAm is New Zealand’s first supercar

You are looking at the first Kiwi supercar, and the four-year old company is named after New Zealand’s only F1 World Champion, Denny Hulme. The Hulme CanAm is no ordinary supercar, because it comes with an experience unlike any other.

But first, you should know what you will be getting from your £295,000 purchase. Potential customers can express their interest with a £10,000 fully refundable deposit. This deposit will then be held in a trust account “pending a private viewing and driving experience of the car at or before the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed for those who have purchased an option to order,” said Jock Freemantle, managing director of the Auckland based firm.

When you have confirmed interest in the product (and have paid up in full I imagine), you will then be treated to a host of luxuries. Firstly, each of the 20 limited run CanAms will be customised according customer requests. They will then be flown down to New Zealand via Air New Zealand’s Business Premier along with one week of luxury accommodation, where driver fitting, the finishing touches and road testing will commence. The car is then shipped off to the destination of choice. This “free holiday” makes the purchase price a little more palatable.

The CanAm gets a 7.0-litre Chevrolet LS7 V8 which develops 600 bhp along with 600 Nm of torque channelled through a close ratio, six-speed CIMA manual gearbox. Paddle and sequential gearboxes are options.

Hulme says that the CanAm does 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds, which is helped on by the fact that the car weighs under 1,000kg. Top speed is in excess of 320 km/h.

“Created for both road and track use, the car blends the raw flavour and appeal of a Formula racing car with dramatic design, superb craftsmanship, exceptional performance and a thrilling and achievable driving experience,” Hulme explains.

KERS could make a 2011 return, Lotus not opting for it

Lotus have announced that they will not be using KERS in 2011 due to a number of reasons. KERS or kinetic energy recovery system is an application whereby the kinetic or moving energy produced by the F1 car is translated into electric energy which is then stored in a battery. This power is later called upon by pressing a button on the steering wheel that produces a horsepower boost.

Last year, the boost was worth 80 bhp for less than 7 seconds, but teams like Ferrari and Renault are pushing for it to be increased to 150 bhp for 10 seconds. Details are still being ironed out by FOTA’s technical group and a decision will be made at this weekend’s Turkish GP. If everyone is favourable towards the system, it will be passed on to the FIA for inclusion in 2011.

“This year we had to buy nearly all the parts from other suppliers but now we are in a position to build the entire car in our factory. So we are trying to take advantage of the experience we have collected with the current car and to make the project more effective.

“If we were to have KERS, in accordance with the technical working group (decision), we would have to start everything again from zero in terms of weight distribution. The big teams are in a different boat, already with solid experience of KERS from recent years,” said team boss Tony Fernandes.

“What we saw last season is that it is not easy to get KERS to operate effectively and reliably; it took a lot of time, money and resources. At Lotus we are fully confident that we are going to cope without it,” he added.

US Grand Prix confirmed to be in Austin, Texas

The long rumoured American F1 track is now confirmed. The venue has finally been set for the US Formula 1 Grand Prix and it will be set in Austin, Texas. The FIA and Full Throttle Productions, promoter of the F1 US grand Prix, have confirmed that Austin will be home to the US Grand Prix from 2012 to 2021.

According to Bernie Ecclestone, a race track will be purposely built from the ground up to host the event. This is the first time in a long time that an F1 facility was specifically built for these purposes. The last US Grand Prix was held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which was won by McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton.

Formula 1 in the US has seen its share of road circuits with the first being in Watkin Glen, NY (1961-1980). Long Beach, Las Vegas, Detroit and Phoenix have all had the honour of hosting the Championship with temporary street circuits.

It will be interesting to see how the track develops and how the new circuit will try and outshine other circuits around the world.

Kia Rondo EX and EXS gets 300 unit equipment boost

If you’re looking to buy a Kia Rondo (called the Naza Citra II Rondo here in Malaysia) sometime soon you’ll be pleased to know that both the Rondo EX and EXS will have their equipment level boosted temporarily – limited to just 300 units.

The price points of RM86,088 and RM90,088 for the Rondo EX and EXS respectively will maintain the same but these 300 units will receive the additional following: new front skirting, side skirting, rear skirting, rear spoiler, door protector visor, wheel arch moulding, rear bumper pad and chrome tail pipe.

As for interior enhancements, the 300 units will get a 9.5 inch overhead LCD screen equipped with a DVD player as well as leather trim covered seats, and new solar tinting. In addition, there’s also an emergency kit bag, first aid kit, fire extinguisher and a tire inflator for free.

Naza Kia has sold 264 units of the Optima platform and engine based Rondo MPV in the first four months of this year so far so I am guessing that the 300 units will be gone in the next three months or so, or perhaps faster if many people are enticed by the offer.

Electric cars may need artificial noise for safety

Electric and hybrid cars have been a staple alternative for eco-conscious motorist for some time, though there might be a chance you’d be involved in an accident more often than that of a standard car. This is obviously due to the fact that electric and hybrid cars produce a very minimal amount of noise as compared to a normal engine.

This poses lots of problems especially for sight impaired pedestrians. Thus automakers and campaigners for the blind are looking into presenting the US Congress with a proposal for minimum noise levels that future cars have to produce.

This problem isn’t just restricted to blind people as a study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed that hybrid cars tend to hit pedestrians more often than cars in situations where the car approaching cannot be seen.

Lotus

I wonder if the Road Safety Department in Malaysia has any studies showing a high pedestrian collision rate with hybrid cars here in Malaysia. Technically only the Prius (and the grey import Estima Hybrid) would qualify as it is the only hybrid in Malaysia that can run on an EV mode – the Civic Hybrid’s combustion engine has to be turned on all the time when it is on the go. But with Malaysians tendency to “settle sendiri” I doubt any meaningful statistics can be collected here.

Anyway, the coalition group has suggested a ‘car language’ that would be a new safety standard for electric and hybrid cars. This would produce some sort of minimum noise when the car is moving at low speeds. When the car speeds up wind and tire noise usually make the car detectable and by then the car would probably exceed the speeds of EV-only modes anyway.

The group would like the sound to be a standardized noise and owners should not be able to customize the sound of the car the same way they do with mobile phone ring tones. In the end it would be up to the NHTSA to determine the minimum sound level or what exact sound would be allowed. Though you can expect this to run through out the motor industry eventually reaching other global markets.

We blogged about this issue in the past and some auto suppliers such as Lotus Engineering have a few proposed solutions to this problem such as the Lotus Sound Synthesis technology. A road speed signal is obtained from the car and a waterproof speaker is positioned near the front of the car to emit a realistic sound based on the throttle and speed of the car.

Italdesign-Giugiaro to work exclusively with VW?

Volkswagen LogoThe announcement that VW has taken up 90.1 percent stake in Italdesign will come as a sigh of relief to its workforce. VW has stated that there will be no redundancies among the 800-strong work force. This takeover though may be bad news for other auto companies as apparently, it has been said that they will gradually relinquish relationships with other auto manufacturers such as BMW. Giugiaro has been credit for alot of the design and engineering work on BMW’s second generation MINI.

This would mean that they would eventually be designing exclusively for Volkswagen. “VW Group assured us [we would] keep our freedom and identity – we will keep our creative independence.” according to a spokesman from Italdesign. He also went on to add that Italdesign would also retain its technical engineering departments and would still be based in Turin.

“Giugiaro said it was a decision he took thinking of the opportunities looking to the market, which is becoming more and more global. Because we are a small company, we were fighting in such a big market – it could be a risk.” added the spokesman. The spokesman also confirmed that they will be working progressively with every brand within the VW group.

Though workers and employees of Italdesign will be safe, it would be a shame that the design and engineering concepts of the company will not be available to other fledgling automotive manufacturers. But if this even happens it’s likely to be slow and progressive and should not affect current contracts.

It’s official: Volkswagen’s Lamborghini buys 90.1 percent stake in Italdesign Giugiaro

It has finally been officially confirmed that Volkswagen Group and Italdesign Giugiaro S.p.A. (IDG) will be joining hands in a new era of motoring engineering and design.

An official press release has been circulated about the details of the new partnership today. This includes the previously mentioned fact that VW will take a 90.1 percent stake in the company which will include the brand name, rights and patents. Thus the remaining 9.9 percent, a very odd number, will be owned by Giugiaro.

Interestingly, the share is being acquired by Audi’s Italian subsidiary Lamborghini Holding S.p.A. This could purely be a pen on paper business decision or it could be the start to something more wonderful and magical, one that any motoring enthusiast will start dreaming about. The similarities between the two are of course the fact that they are both Italian and have a flair for producing ridiculously beautiful machinery.

IDG an VW have cooperated on many project which include the Golf Mk1, along with concepts such as the Passat, Scirocco and the Audi 80. A comprehensive development framework agreement was concluded in 2008 and VW will continue to work with IDG on projects such as the VW Up! family model.

“With this shareholding in Italdesign, we are participating in one of the most renowned design and development companies with one of the richest traditions in the automobile industry. Italdesign is the flagship for creative Italian automobile design and has been instrumental in shaping the face of the automobile industry worldwide. As the creator of the Golf I, Giorgetto Giugiaro laid a new foundation for Volkswagen design in the 1970s,” said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of VW.
