Feel like James Bond with Jaeger-LeCoultre’s transponder watch – it starts your Aston Martin DBS!

Gadgets, great cars and James Bond are inseparable. So when the franchise moved back to Aston Martin after flirting with a certain German brand, fantasies and imaginations started to centre around the beautiful DBS. Not sure if actual DBS owners have Bond fantasies, but it wouldn’t hurt to be a world class spy for a few seconds right?

Not new, but still cool, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s AMVOX2 DBS Transponder watch is billed as “the ultimate accessory for the ultimate sports car”. Besides the usual functions, this watch has is the ability to lock and unlock your DBS. Because of this, only Aston Martin dealerships are able to authorise the timepiece to “read and communicate” with the supercar.

The case and dial of the AMVOX2 DBS Transponder are highly detailed, featuring a suspended metallic grey DBS symbol, a discrete Aston Martin emblem on the movement operating indicator and ruthenium grey bridges, satin finish and a black dial that all evoke the DBS’s instrument panel. The outer dial ring also has an opening that reveals the internal mechanisms of the chronograph and transponder functions, an allusion to the exposed brake callipers visible behind the sporting wheel rims of the DBS car.

Prices are around $40,750, but then again when have you ever seen James Bond asking the man at the counter “How much?”

Pore over the detailing from the hi res image after the jump.

BMW X3 teaser shots revealed by official Dutch website

An official teaser has been released by BMW Netherlands for the new X3 which is expected to be showcased at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. What you do get is a glimpse of the bonnet and the rear light clusters, which feature a familiar X3 shape, BMW’s trademark LED bars and a white stripe crossing it.

There are also pictures of some of the designers working on the clay model with Dutch quotes on the brochure pictures. Apparently it reads: “X3 was done in DesignWorks California, the interior was done in Munich. The reason why the evolutionary appearance was chosen is because customers like the taut, tough styling of the E83 X3.

“E83 X3 had brought customers to the BMW brand for the first time it was also a vehicle that spread out the BMW brand as a new Lifestyle orientated segment which in turn brought a large majority of new customers to the BMW brand. A feat the recently launched X1 has now repeated.

“Typically it is recognisable as an X3, but it is underneath the surface where you will see and experience the changes, The whole second generation has come about by “reverse engineering” the E83 , we knew what the consumer liked and what they didn’t like so they set about refining the pluses whilst reworking and refining the minuses.

“Overall when you get to see the whole X line up altogether as you will soon, you will see how each demonstrate their own character , differ in dimensions and offer a choice for whatever your requirements need be.”

With this, we know that the X3 is coming really soon. More pictures after the jump.

VW: Audi S1 on the way but no Polo R to avoid clash

Technical chief of the Volkswagen Polo GTI, Dr. Ernst Linder has confirmed that Audi will roll out the S1 next year, and because of that there won’t be a Polo R to avoid clashing. The good doctor however revealed that a Jetta R is in the works.

Linder said that the range topping A1 will get a 178 bhp 1.4-litre Twincharger engine and a seven-speed DSG, as per the Polo GTI. No quattro though, the S1 will be front driven. On the Polo R, he said: “From the technical point-of-view, of course we can do something, but from the financial point-of-view it makes not so much sense. It would be too expensive and we have the S1. The S1 will have 178 bhp and it’s a very sporty car. If we put much more horsepower in the (Polo), we need something like four-wheel-drive. This is a technical feature that is very expensive.”

He did not let slip any technical information for the Jetta R. But since the standard “Golf sedan” isn’t even out yet, the performance version should be quite some time away from surfacing.

Lotus Racing shifts focus and resources to 2011 car

The first round of aero upgrades introduced at the Spanish GP moved Lotus Racing slightly closer to the tail of the midfield pack, and another update for the T127 will be on board for the British GP in July, but the team is already focusing the bulk of its resources on next year’s car, according to tech chief Mike Gascoyne.

“We still have stuff coming through and there will probably be a package for Silverstone, but now we are very much concentrating on 2011,” Gascoyne told Autosport. “Next year, with the big rule changes, it levels the playing field and we need to put our resources into that. So we want to keep pushing, but we want to look at next year as well.”

With its entry only confirmed six months before the start of this season, Gascoyne admits that Lotus had to focus on just getting the car to Bahrain rather than pushing it to the design limit. And while the T127 has room for improvement, the well travelled Brit reckons that resources will be better spent on 2011 because there’s little hope of overtaking any team in the table.

“We want to get 10th (in the Constructors’ Championship) and realistically, even if we made the car better, would we get ninth or eighth? Probably not. Therefore is it worth putting resources into that, or switching them to next year? There is also the commercial aspect you want to be seen moving forward this year, but we want to take some people by surprise next year.”

He however assured that work on the current car won’t be shelved. “We are still testing in the wind tunnel and there are bits in production that are coming through, so we are not stopping now. We are also taking weight out of the car. We don’t have carbon suspension on the car, that will be coming through for Silverstone, and that will obviously carry over to next year. We are pretty happy with where we are.”

GALLERY: Live images of the refreshed 2011 Proton Gen2

Here are more images of the refreshed Proton Gen2, which will be available for viewing at Proton showrooms starting from tomorrow (22 May). This revision to Proton’s five-door hatch is almost like the SE treatment previously applied to the Persona and Saga, with exterior changes such as a black roof, red or white paint schemes and grey door handles. The wheels are also painted in the same colour.

This car we photographed is the High-Line automatic that goes for RM 60,488. It comes with red/black leather seats and trim, cruise control and steering wheel audio buttons, among other kit. The RM6,000 cheaper M-Line auto does without all these, but now comes with the 125 bhp Campro CPS engine, which replaces the Campro IAFM unit.

The bespoke Blaupunkt stereo (which not everyone likes) remains, unlike the Persona Elegance, which replaces it with an aftermarket single-DIN player. The instrument design is carried over from before. Proton only released a few images yesterday, so go ahead and browse our live gallery for a better view – it’s after the jump!

Tesla partners Toyota in EV production, buys closed plant

Toyota and Tesla have announced that they will partner each other in the production of electric cars. EV specialist Tesla will acquire Toyota’s New United Motor Manufacturing Inc (NUMMI) plant that was recently closed down. NUMMI, located across the San Francisco bay from Tesla’s Palo Alto HQ, was a former joint venture between Toyota and General Motors.

Tesla will be looking to employ around 1,000 more staff. CEO Elon Musk said that Tesla’s next model, a sleek four-door coupe style called Model S, will account for about 20,000 units a year when it debuts in 2012. The $40,000 Model S will be affordable for the brand’s standards, joining the over $100,000 Roadster.

Toyota will be investing $50 million in Tesla in exchange for common stock after the latter’s initial public offering is completed. What does the world’s biggest automaker stand to gain here? Tesla’s lean and rapid product development is one, as well as its electric vehicle technology. Toyota is still using nickel-metal-hydride batteries in its hybrids for instance, while Tesla is using lithium-ion. In return, Tesla will gain from Toyota’s scale, engineering resources and access to its massive supplier base.

“Decades ago, Toyota was also born as a venture business. By partnering with Tesla, my hope is that all Toyota employees will recall that venture business spirit and take on the challenges of the future,” Toyota president Akio Toyoda said about the partnership.

DMC Quattro Veloce kit for the Lambo Murcielago LP640

While we do see Gallardos on our streets from time to time, the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 is a truly rare sight. But it may not be so unique in Beverly Hills or Monte Carlo, hence the need to dress up the car. For that, Dusseldorf based tuner DMC has come out with a 59,000 euro package called Quattro Veloce.

The QV kit consists of a redesigned spoiler, new hood, side vents and a new “stabilising diffuser”, all made in carbon fibre, of course. Up front, the Murcie gets a new front fascia with redesigned hood and intakes, plus a new splitter.

Inside, a touch of exclusivity is added by the use of ostrich leather whereas ostrich-like cow hide, which is said to be very durable, has been used for the rest of the interior. Add 40,000 euros for the optional leather treatment, carbon fibre seats and diamond forged white carbon wheels. Sounds like every rapper’s dream car.

Power from the 6.5-litre V12 has been increased to 670 bhp (with 660 Nm of torque), which allows the car to move from 0 to 96 km/h (60 mph) in just 3.2 seconds. Acceleration goes on to 343 km/h. The heart of the beast is kept in a custom red carbon cage for added effect.

Only be 40 of these Quattro Veloce LP640s will be made. More pics after the jump.

All GM vehicles to come with active louvered grille?

SRG Global Inc, a supplier of chrome-plated plastic parts, has developed a prototype louvered grille for General Motors aimed at improving the efficiency of the automaker’s full-size pickup trucks. Stringent US emissions and fuel economy regulations are looming, and the behemoths aren’t exempted.

Grilles that can open and close aren’t new. Some cars already have such a feature, although it is a secondary part, mounted behind the grille. “We’re trying to find a way to do it more efficiently, less expensively, as an integrated part,” said Jon DeGaynor, SRG’s VP of business development and strategy.

The active louvers are connected to the engine control module, opening and closing per engine temperature. Shutting off airflow not only reduces drag and fuel consumption, it allows the engine to heat up faster, emitting less CO2 in the process.

“What we heard is that GM is moving 100% of their vehicles to louvered grilles,” DeGaynor was quoted by Ward’s Auto as saying.
