Chery Alado exports Eastar MPV to Thailand and Indonesia

Chery Alado Automobile Sdn Bhd will start exporting the locally assembled Chery Eastar 2.0L MPV to Thailand and Indonesia, starting with 50 units to each country. By the end of 2010, Chery expects this figure to touch 500 units. Next export targets are Singapore and Brunei in 2011. The Eastar is put together at Oriental Assemblers in Johor alongside the Tiggo SUV.

The Eastar 2.0L made its debut here last month. Its 2.0-litre ACTECO engine was jointly developed by Chery and AVL of Austria, producing 134 bhp and 180 Nm. Paired to a four-speed automatic, this twin-cam unit will retire the dated 2.4-litre Mitsubishi 4G64 engine, which was an Eastar selling point that Chery Alado harped on previously. In Malaysia, the 2.0L ACTECO engine alone gets a 5-year or 200,000 km warranty (the rest of the car gets a 3-year/100,000 km warranty). It’s priced at RM79,998.

Chery has done quite well in Malaysia lately, spurred by the well received Eastar. Last year, Chery sold more than 1,800 vehicles, a 170% increase over 2008 figures. This year, they are targetting sales of over 5,000 units. The company plans to introduce three new models this year, including a compact car, to achieve that target. Looking at Chery’s range, this could possibly include the more modern looking A1 and A3 or the oddball QQ6.

    RM79,998? Expensive
In China, it just cost less than 100,000Yuan

I checked it’s price in China just now, the ones equipped with 1.9T engine and 6speed manual transmission just cost 110,000Yuan, the price of ones with 2.0L engine is even much lower

  • chery has been doing great eventhough they only entered the business in 1997..they can have a wide range of their apteco engine, and much2 better design compare to proton..and they quality is getting better & better now..i just do not know what the proton is doing that they can only come out with pathetic range of 1.3l & 1.6l campro & boring car design, simple car..should i say the proton is too slow or the chery is too fast?..

The Eastar looks decent and even the interior build quality is pretty okay. Heck, I have even mistaken a Honda Stream for an Eastar once while coming up against it from the side!

But I think the rear lights with excessive chrome is a bit tasteless and “Ah Beng”. Just a regular red+clear cluster would have been great.

  • New Car Smell on Jun 04, 2010 at 8:36 am

I bumped into this MPV and Tiggo on display at Giant recently. One thing that struck me once I entered the cabin is the “new car smell”. Do you know what that means? That means Chery is still using chemical plasticizer. This is a compound that produces ‘soft-touch’ feel to the dashboard. Ever wondered why modern and relatively cheap cars nowadays don’t have new car smell and the dashboard plastics are pretty hard? Because this ‘plasticizer’ emits (evaporates) over time and it can be toxic if inhaled in large quantities. So, manufacturers don’t use them anymore. BTW, the soft-touch materials in more up market cars are from different materials (read: more expensive) and they should be safe.

eastar is wider than livina, hence cc is bigger than 1.8 livina & 1.6 exora. lookwise is better than innova, capacity is bigger than rondo. i’m not going for livina, exora, rondo or innova. yes, interior is a little plastic like, not so futuristic. eastar…. mmmmpppp… i need an MPV that’s affordable.

Saya dah beli CE 2.0. Design cantik, prestasi enjin ok. Bawa sedap. A/con cukup sejuk. Spesifikasi macam kereta mewah. Harga murah. Hanya kerana buatan China, CE dikritik.

Hi.. I am seriously considering in buying this car. Afterall, my wife dh berkenan sesangat. I am contemplating between CE n Exora. I think from all the comment I read, I am confident that the engine performance and handling will not be a problem but the interior part especially comment on the airbag cover. Betul ke dia rengang? How about other plastic interior? Senang patah tak? Anak aku semua kecik2 lagi. Kalau patah spare part senang tak nk dapat? Please I need some advice on this before I can make up my mind. Thank you.

  • A 2.0l Chery Owner on Jul 13, 2010 at 5:39 pm

I bought my new Chery Eastar 2.0l at its first launch. There were some minor problems like car bonet not aligned etc, but they are duely fixed after my 1000km service. Afterall, I am proud to be a Chery owner for the price I paid. The Acteco 2.0 engine is very good, powerful and fuel-efficient. There is also a good Chery community site that allows Chery owners to share experience and DIY knowledge.

Like it or not, I think that China car makers are advancing very fast! Glee which is a mother company of Chery (I heard from service center folks, not sure it’s true or not) has acquired Volvo of Europe. Local car makers should really learn from them or even from Korean car makers. Car exise duty should not be put as a form of permanent protection to our local car makers. Local car makers need to seriously rethink their current strategy. Forcing their own people to buy over-priced local car (even without excise duty) is not a wise long term strategy. They need to evolve.

It’s hard to imagine US citizens who earn 3 times more than us get to enjoy 3 times lower car prices than us who earn 3 times less than them and has to pay 3 times more (due to excise duty) to own a similar spec foreign car. Just a 2cent thought to consider.

Was at the PJ HQ yesterday.

No test drive unit. Unit at Kelang road show.

    Feeling:
    1) Outside look ok.
    2) Inside quality not so good – the dashboard fittings especially. WIfe and kids did not like.

The front doors heavy or the hinge not strong. When you open the door, you can see the door sort of “bouncing” up and down 2 to 3 times before stalizing.

I guess there ‘s till losta improvement for the manufacturer.
