Jenson Button sues Brawn GP and gets his own F1 car!

Yes, one unit of last year’s championship winning car was owed to Jenson Button and he finally got what was promised after taking legal action against former team Brawn GP, which is now Mercedes GP.

How did this come about? Apparently, Button took a big pay cut when Honda left F1 but added a clause in his contract that will see him keep the chassis of his car if he won the 2009 Championship. “In the event that the driver wins the championship at any time during the term, the company shall transfer … ownership of one chassis of the type driven by the driver during that winning season,” read the clause. Of course, that scenario didn’t seem to be very possible when the season started, but we all know what happened after a few races.

Reports say that the reason Mercedes GP couldn’t hand over the prize was because of chassis shortages. Mercedes offered to build a replica of the BGP001 car, but the Brit refused saying that it lacked the “special and unique” value of the cars he actually drove to the title. It is believed that six BGP001 cars were made.

Facing court action, Mercedes GP reluctantly gave in and gave the car to Button. “We have arrived at an amicable resolution, and so there will no longer be any court action over this,” the driver’s spokesman confirmed.

Nothing much to celebrate on Lotus’ 500th Grand Prix

Did you notice the “500 Races” special livery on the Lotus Racing T127 at Valencia? Yes, the Lotus name celebrated its 500th Grand Prix at the European GP and the team had flown in Lotus founder Colin Chapman’s son Clive to mark the occasion. Qualifying saw both Jarno and Heikki show good pace to take their “standard parking spots” in front of Virgin and HRT but behind everyone else. In yesterday’s race, the Finn got involved in a crash with Mark Webber and Trulli finished 21st and last.

“Obviously it was a very disappointing end to our 500th race. Jarno got hit at the start, and we had to change the nose. He also took a hit at the back, and that caused a gearbox problem. We were able to fix that and send him out again, although he was three laps down. He was held up by some of the other slower cars, but at the end of the race he was able to push and really show the car’s pace,” said tech chief Mike Gascoyne.

“I was going really well, pulling away from the guys behind by about half a second a lap, and with Mark we were racing for position so I was always going to defend. I didn’t do anything wrong and he just ran into me. I think he missed his braking point and he ran into me at a very bad angle – his front tyre hit my right rear and he took off. I had to make a mandatory visit to the medical centre, and shook hands with Mark there, but I’m absolutely fine, and glad Mark is too,” Heikki said of his incident.

Here’s Webber’s side of the story: “I was looking for the best tow to get the job done and pass him and he was playing quite hard as well down the inside, blocking all of a sudden very aggressively. In the end the thing that surprised me was how early he braked, that’s the thing which caught me out. It didn’t matter where I was or how close to the tow, I still had everything under control.

“Yeah, he braked, or lifted or whatever, and it turns out it’s about 80 metres before I braked for the previous lap so I mean it’s a different category to what had happened the previous few laps,” the Aussie told BBC.

European GP: Post-race penalties for ten drivers

Safety car rule infringements have led to nine drivers slapped with post-race penalties from the stewards at the European GP. They are Jenson Button, Rubens Barrichello, Nico Hulkenberg, Robert Kubica, Vitaly Petrov, Adrian Sutil, Vitantonio Liuzzi, Sebastien Buemi and Pedro de la Rosa.

The abovementioned drivers will have five seconds added to their final race time for speeding under the safety car during their in-laps prior to pitting. The Mercedes SLS AMG was called into action following Mark Webber’s dramatic crash in the early stages of the Valencia race. In a separate incident, Virgin’s Timo Glock has had 20 seconds added to his race time for ignoring blue flags.

As a result of this, home favourite Fernando Alonso moves up a place to eighth, with Sebastian Buemi of Toro Rosso dropping to ninth, while Mercedes GP’s Nico Rosberg picks up a point for tenth at the expense of De la Rosa of Sauber.

Sebastian Vettel wins dramatic European Grand Prix!

Pole sitter Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull has picked up his first win since the Malaysian GP in Valencia, Spain. The German crossed the finish line ahead of Lewis Hamilton who was closing the gap in the final stages of the race. The final podium position went to Hamilton’s team mate Jenson Button.

The home of this year’s European GP gave viewers a rather dramatic race especially with a horrifying accident that involved Red Bull’s Mark Webber and Lotus’ Heikki Kovalainen. The accident spawned a Safety Car situation which itself was showered with controversy and it substantially affected the outcome of the race, especially from fourth place and below.

Williams’ Rubens Barrichello finished in fourth ahead of Renault’s Robert Kubica and Force India’s Adrian Sutil. Seventh place went to Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi who drove a sensational race. The sole Japanese driver of the season even overtook Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi at the last corner on the final lap. Buemi settled in eight while Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso only managed to go home in ninth, although he had a good chance of finishing in the podium, before the Safety Car situation that is. The final top ten position went to other Sauber driver, Pedro de la Rosa which means both the Saubers finished in the points today.

Lotus Racing didn’t have anything much to celebrate about on its 500th race, if you take into account Lotus’ previous campaigns. Jarno Trulli finished the race but did so in last place, 21st. The Italian had some problems with his car and had to make several pitstops. Only three drivers retired today including Williams’ Nico Hulkenberg who stopped with about eight laps remaining. The other two were Hekki Kovalainen and Mark Webber. As mentioned above they were involved in a massive accident.

Webber, fresh from a pitstop was attempting to overtake Kovalainen but as he flicked his car out of a slip stream, his Red Bull hit the back of the Lotus and before you knew it his car went airborne and landed head down. The Red Bull then fell on its tires and went straight into a barrier. Kovalainen on the other hand had missing front and rear wings. More spectacular than the accident itself was the fact that Webber was able to walk away from the massive crash. This happened early in race and the Safety Car was deployed.

As the Safety Car was coming out of the pits, Lewis Hamilton overtook it leaving the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso behind. The Ferrari’s were running high-up in the field before the SLS AMG was deployed. Hamilton’s move came to the Steward’s attention and he was slapped with a drive through penalty later in the race. But the penalty didn’t really do much damage as the Brit maintained his second place and Alonso was definitely frustrated about this.

Also when the Safety Car was deployed some teams managed to make pit stops right away which brought them forward in the field. Unfortunately both Ferrari and Mercedes failed to capitalize on this and only managed to pit while spending time behind the Safety Car. This pushed them further down the field and racing around a circuit that is naturally hard to overtake made it worse for them.

Kamui Kobayashi made full use of the situation and settled in third place, but he did not make a pit stop. He maintained the position and managed to fend off Jenson Button but the Sauber driver had to pit eventually and dropped to seventh, still a good position nevertheless. Eventual winner Vettel raced without a hitch except when he was suffering some brake issues towards the end of the race, which is why Hamilton was able to close the gap.

The Safety Car situation also led to the decision by the Stewards to investigate Button, Barrichello, Kubica, Sutil, Buemi, de la Rosa, Petrov, Liuzzi and Hulkenberg after the race. They may be penalized for driving too quickly under the Safety Car condition. While we wait the Stewards to make their decisions, you can go here view the preliminary results. Formula 1 now heads to Silverstone for the 2010 British Grand Prix.

Honda Accord Sedan and Coupe facelifted in the US

Honda has given the Accord a minor mid-life facelift in the US. Both the sedan and coupe body have been facelifted, and the sedan now sports a similar back end to our very own Malaysian market Accord as it has gained the two reflector strips on the boot lid that were missing from the USDM model.

On the front for both the sedan and coupe model, there’s new grilles and bumpers, and there are also new alloy wheel designs. The Accord Coupe also gets a revised brakelight appearance. There are some new features on the inside including a USB audio interface, new seat fabric for cloth seat models, an updated instrumentation panel design, and a new reverse camera for satnav-equipped cars.

There are pretty much no changes in the engine bay. Interestingly the 2.4 litre engine for the Accord comes in two tunes for different models. The LX, LX-P and SE sedan models get a similar engine tune to our Malaysian market car which produces 177 horsepower (180 PS) while the EX and EX-L Sedans as well as the LX-S, EX and EX-L Coupes get a slightly more powerful 190 horsepower model.

I’d expect the Malaysian market Accord facelift to be pretty much identical to the US model facelift but to get a clearer picture we’d have to wait until Honda launches an update for the Honda Inspire in the Japanese market as that car is almost identical to our car for the pre-facelift models.

Look after the jump for a full photo gallery for the USDM Accord facelift.

Ford building new factory in Thailand – to roll out new Ford Focus for ASEAN in 2012

Ford is setting up new operations to boost its presence in the Asia Pacific region with the construction of a “state-of-the-art passenger vehicle manufacturing” in Rayong, Thailand. Costing around 450 million dollars, the site is expected to be completed in 2012.

The factory will initially churn out 150,000 units a year, 15 percent of which will be for local Thai market while the balance will be used for Asia Pacific and African region exports. The 750,000 sq metre assembly plant is also expected to create 11,000 new jobs for the local economy, which is made out of 2,200 directly employed by Ford while the rest will be of suppliers and dealer networks.

Ford will also be spending almost $800 million on local components through Thailand’s supplier network for production at the new plant.

This new plant will be a flexible facility producing a range of vehicles and fully integrated to support body assembly, paint, trim and final assembly. The next-generation Ford Focus (shown above) is expected to be the first model to roll off the production line in 2012. The Malaysian Focus currently comes from the Philippines.

Ford currently produces Ford Fiestas and Mazda 2s for the Malaysian market at their AutoAlliance Thailand plant which is a JV with Mazda. This factory also supplies Fiestas to the ASEAN region, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Red Bull secures front row for the European Grand Prix

Red Bull is now answering back to McLaren’s recent dominance with a front row lock down for tomorrow’s European Grand Prix in Valencia. The Red Bull front row is headed by Sebastian Vettel who scored his first pole position since this year’s Malaysian Grand Prix. Mark Webber is second ahead of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton who made a mistake on his final run, which may have cost him second or possibly pole position.

Ferrari has improved following updates implemented on its cars as Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa managed fourth and fifth places respectively. Robert Kubica gave another strong performance for Renault with his sixth place ahead of Jenson Button in the other McLaren. Like his team mate Button also made a mistake on his last stint. The two Williams managed to get into the top ten and will start the race around a beautiful sea side setting in ninth and tenth positions.

Force India which is a familiar face in the top ten during qualifying only managed 13th and 14th places while Mercedes GP did not really shine either. Nico Rosberg had to settle with 12th while his 7-times World Champion team mate Michael Schumacher who made his debut in Valencia only managed 15th, his worst qualifying result thus far in the season. However it also has to be noted that Schuey was suffering from what believed to be a power steering problem.

Lotus will start the race from 19th and 20th positions with Jarno Trulli leading the way. He posted a lap time of 1.40.658 compared to 1.37.587 set by Vettel in Q3. This is a gap of about three seconds which is an improvement compared to the beginning of the season when the new teams were about five seconds off the pace. Furthermore Vettel set that lap time in Q3 meaning its after more rubber has been laid on the track. During Q1 which is when Trulli set his time, the fastest time was low 1 minute 38 seconds.

This is an important improvement especially since the FIA has decided to re-introduce the 107% qualifying rule starting from next year. The rule was last scene in 2002 and if I remember correctly Alex Yoong failed to make the cut a couple of times when he was racing for Minardi. The final four positions were taken up by Virgin and Hispania drivers. Expect a good tussle between the Red Bulls, McLarens and Ferraris during the 57-lap race around the 5.4 kilometers circuit. Mercedes SLS AMG Supersport Black Edition by Kicherer

Mercedes went all out in creating the supercar to replace the SLR McLaren. Drawing inspiration from the iconic 300 SL for its gullwing doors, the new SLS AMG features a thunderous 6.2-litre V8 engine which most will be in awe of.

However unlike most car enthusiasts, 563 hp and 650 Nm pulling 1.6 tonnes isn’t enough for the German tuners, or perhaps they just have to satisfy the modding itch. Mercedes experts Kicherer has this for us, the Supersport Black Edition, which should not be confused with AMG’s own flagship Black Series cars.

Changes include the usual revised ECU and a stainless steel sport exhaust system. This pushes power to 620 hp, which is 100 horses per litre. Matching the added performance is the sinister matte foil wrapped exterior, a front spoiler lip, revised diffuser, matte black exterior accents (instead of chrome), Kicherer badge on the hood and 20-inch RS-1 wheels. The car also features adjustable sports suspension.

Ferrari prodigy Lance Stroll beats F1 driver in kart race

As previously reported, Ferrari recently recruited a new member into the Ferrari Driving Academy in the form of 11-year old Lance Stroll from Canada. The talented lad joined the Scuderia at the recent Canadian Grand Prix for a go-kart session, and guess what, he ruffled some F1 feathers on track!

Almost everyone from the team took part in this friendly race where the 12 fastest drivers went on to compete in a final event. The dozen included both F1 drivers Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso, but Stroll finished the day second! To achieve that, he must have left some test drivers AND one of Ferrari’s two F1 drivers behind in his dust!

Your guess is at good as ours as to who that might be, as Ferrari conveniently forgot to add that bit of juicy information to the press statement. Of course it isn’t exactly a level playing field due to factors like Stroll’s lower weight, but it still gives you an idea of what this prodigy is capable of. We did our share of racing with F1 drivers on karts before, but the best of Malaysian motoring journalists couldn’t come within two corners of the real deal! Read our account here.

Hyundai Sonata price revealed – RM135,888 to RM163,888!

I just got back from the special preview of the sixth generation Hyundai Sonata, where the media and soon to be owners of the YF got to have a closer look at the latest D-segment car to hit our market. At the event, Hyundai-Sime Darby revealed the only figure yet to be announced about the new Sonata – the price.

Much speculation has been made about the price, with some claiming that the range will start at RM148K. No such thing of course, and the 2.0 Standard is priced closer to RM130K than RM150K. Here you go:

2.0 Standard – RM135,888
2.0 High Spec – RM143,888
2.4 High Spec – RM163,888

The Sonata uses the new Theta II family of engines paired with a self-developed 6-speed auto ‘box. The 2.0 pushes out 164 bhp and 197 Nm of torque while the 2.4 has 175 bhp/227 Nm – figures that match (or better) those of its rivals. Combined fuel economy is rated at 13.2 km/l for the 2.0 and 12.5 km/l for the 2.4.

Spec wise, the High Spec cars get the panoramic roof, ESP with Hill Assist, leather seats and keyless entry with push start. The difference between the 2.4 HS and the 2.0 HS is that the bigger engined car gets a front passenger powered seat (as opposed to driver only), HID headlamps and climate control. Standard equipment across the range include ABS, dual airbags, 17-inch alloys, cruise control, factory stereo with iPod/AUX in and rear air-con vents. Five colours are available, which are white, silver, black, red and blue.

The car will have its official launch on the 2nd of July. But from tomorrow till next Tuesday (25-29 June) everyone is invited to Hyundai’s showroom at Glenmarie to view the car from 2pm to 7pm.
