AD: Castrol Edge – lubricants tested in extreme conditions for the best performance

Our cars are probably the biggest or second biggest investment we’ll ever make, and it’s only fitting to provide it with the best lubricants that extract the most performance and provide maximum protection for its engine. When it comes to choosing fully synthetic engine oil for your ride, one can’t really go wrong with Castrol Edge, the flagship high performance fully synthetic oil from lubricant specialists Castrol.

Castrol Edge has been engineered to meet and exceed the toughest industry performance standards and specification across seven critical engine factors. They are protection against wear, lifespan (oil should remain in the engine throughout the service interval, not burnt off), performance in extreme conditions, to ensure that engines remain cleaner for longer, protection at full load/power, thermal control (seen the ad where Cristiano Ronaldo drives his M3 “to hot places” and “to cold places”?) and fuel economy.

To achieve the above, Castrol put its Edge on the edge, litreally. Tests were designed to push the lubricant all the way in extreme hot conditions, extreme cold conditions, maximum power and fuel economy.

For the power test, Castrol took two identical cars with 4.6-litre V8 engines, filled one with Castrol Edge Sport 0W-40 and the other with a competitor synthetic oil. Using a special test chassis dyno the cars were run flat out at maximum power (225 bhp) without oil top ups. The Castrol engine was still running strong 40 hours after the other engine seized, proving that Castrol Edge performs better at full load up to 45% longer than other synthetic oils.

Cold starts are very taxing on engines and Castrol Edge’s superior cold flow properties is one of its trump features. In tests, the rival oil was slow and stiff at -52°C, solidifying at -55°C, while Castrol Edge continued to flow.

More interesting, and relevant to us here in Malaysia, is the extreme heat test. The test started by putting Castrol Edge into a regular engine. For hours, the poor engine was surrounded by flames until the plastic parts disintegrated. Next to melt were the hoses, before the metal parts liquefied and ran down the side of the engine. As for the oil, it reached an amazing 340°C, way hotter than any real life scenario.

Castrol then took the tortured oil, filtered out the debris and sent it to a leading independent oil test laboratory (ISP Labs, Grand Couronne, France). It was then put through the toughest European industry high temperature test (72 continuous hours of 5600 rpm, 150°C oil temp). The result was a clear pass on all criteria: deposits, viscosity control, and piston ring sticking.

A good lubricant also increases engine efficiency, and Castrol Edge chalked up over 2.5% better fuel economy that the benchmark 0W-40 synthetic oil in European tests, making it an impressive all rounder.

The Castrol Edge range consists of the Castrol Edge Sport 0W-40, Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60 and the Castrol Edge 5W-40. If you want to try it out, this is the best time as Castrol is having a contest where the winner gets to meet the most famous footballer of his generation – Castrol brand ambassador Cristiano Ronaldo – in Spain. The winner will also get to watch a La Liga match at Real Madrid’s Bernabeu Stadium, plus a visit to the club’s Valdebebas training ground in his/her four nights in Spain’s capital.

The contest is called Give It Your Best Kick, and all one needs to do to win this grand prize worth RM20,000 is to purchase a pack of Castrol Edge engine oil and submit a photo of yourself giving “your best kick” along with the entry code from the contest label. Once you’ve done that, ask your Facebook friends to vote for your photo. Here’s a tip to increase your winning chances: go to any Castrol Auto Service outlet and you’ll find a Ronaldo standee. Include him in your photo for 10% additional votes!

Facelifted Land Rover Freelander 2 – improved engine, new looks, 2WD model to debut next year

Land Rover will start sales of the facelifted Freelander 2 in the UK at the end of September, but the details are now out. There’s a revised diesel engine and updated aesthetics, inside and out.

First, the new powertrain. It’s a revised version of the 2.2-litre PSA sourced diesel that made 160 hp and 400 Nm. There are now 2 states of tune – the 148 hp TD4 and 187 hp SD4, both with 20 Nm more than the outgoing engine. There’s a new variable geometry turbocharger and reprogrammed ECU along with the upgrade from Euro 4 to Euro 5 standards. The new motor also uses a catalysed diesel particulate filter compatible with 10% biodiesel (previously 5%).

CO2 emissions are down, and fuel efficiency is up – 5.8L/100 km for the TD4 and 5.2L/100 km for the SD4. The TD4 will feature a manual transmission and Start Stop system as standard (automatic transmission without start stop is the other option), while the SD4 will only be available with a six-speed auto. The SD4 does 0-96 km/h (60 mph) in 8.7 seconds on to a top speed of 190 km/h, a big improvement over the old car.

Land Rover MD Phil Popham also revealed plans to bring launch a 2WD Freelander using the 148 hp engine and a six speed manual. To debut next January, this “eD4″ variant will come with start-stop and fuel consumption of 4.98L/100 km while only releasing 158 g/km of CO2. A 2WD Land Rover? “The European market for two-wheel-drive SUVs represents 23% of the segment, and we intend to compete strongly,” Popham explains.

Exterior changes include a new front bumper, front fog lap bezels, front grille finish, headlights and tail lamps, a full width tailgate chrome strip, and new 18 or 19 inch alloys. Colours that have been added are Kosrae Green, Baltic Blue and Fuji White. Inside, new bits consists of revised instruments, four new seat styles, 8/6 way electric seats plus premium carpet mats and covered centre stowage.

Peugeot 207 Sedan (Project T33) spotted in Rawang!

Two units of Naza’s T33 Project have been spotted on the road by our own Danny Tan in Rawang! These two red cars are the latest locally assembled Peugeot cars soon to be offered in Malaysia, perhaps by the end of the year?

These shots are actually quite revealing. There are some minor tape on the car but the headlamps and tail lamps are quite clearly visible. Of course we can’t say for 100% sure if any of what we see here will make it to the final product or not.

The T33 Project is basically the Peugeot 207 Sedan, which will be built in Gurun for the local market as well as the ASEAN region. There has already been news in the Indonesian media that they will also be getting the 207 Sedan, imported from Malaysia in early 2011, so export plans are firmly in place. 18,000 of 207 Sedans are planned to be rolled out of Naza’s Gurun plant annually.

It will be offered with a 1.6 litre engine, which is a welcome upgrade from the 1.4 litre found in the Naza 206.

Look after the jump for the rest of the snapshots.

Wald previews mean styling package for the Toyota Prius

Japanese tuner Wald International previews a new styling package for the eco-friendly Toyota Prius, proving that no car can escape the hand of the tuner, even an innocent eco icon. The company has so far released one teaser picture with limited amount of information on this “Executive Line” package.

The styling package will feature a more aggressive front spoiler, rear spoiler, rear apron, side skirts along with a lowering kit. It’s finished off with a set of cool alloy wheels. Not too bad looking, we must say!

More information is expected in the coming weeks, and Wald will also be introducing a package for the Honda CR-Z hybrid. Not sure if local Prius owners would even half consider pimping their green car Wald style, but this at least shows the possibilities with a car no one would call sporty looking in standard form.

Perodua vendors to enjoy “end-to-end supply chain financing” from CIMB Group

Perodua and CIMB Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) hours ago that will enable the carmaker’s vendors to enjoy “end-to-end supply chain financing” that will increase their liquidity and help their working capital management. This financing program is the first of its kind in Malaysia.

How does this “end-to-end” financing scheme benefit the vendors? Supply chain financing is divided into 2 parts – pre-delivery financing and post-delivery financing. The former is when the vendor needs financing for raw materials to make the parts, while the latter is when the parts are already delivered to Perodua, but without payment coming in yet. “This scheme will finance the gap,” said Dato’ Charon Wardini, Deputy CEO, Corporate & Investment Banking, CIMB Group.

In pre-delivery stage, vendors obtain financing based on monthly order value to pay for raw materials while post-delivery financing is obtained upon submission of invoices and documents to Perodua. Upon maturity of the invoices, Perodua will pay CIMB to settle the vendors’ financing. Which means instant cash to them, which is not the case normally.

The financing will provide vendors with cashflow to buy raw materials, produce the parts and focus on next month’s order. “Better cashflow can lead to better productivity,” said Aminar Rashid Salleh, Perodua’s MD. SMEs can find it hard to find financing, and this scheme, which comes with “competitive and reasonable rates”, makes it easy for approved Perodua vendors, the panel explained.

Perodua has a total of 141 vendors which it helped develop with tech training and tech transfer. Aminar points out that local content in Perodua’s cars has increased through the years, from 47% in the Kancil to 80% with the Myvi. The Viva had 85% local content when it rolled out in 2007 while the latest Alza has 90%. The Rawang based carmaker is estimated to purchase RM3.8 billion worth of parts from local vendors this year.

Volvo to make 7-Series and S-Class competitor?

Geely Boss Li Shufu mentioned just hours after the announcement of the Chinese automakers purchase of Volvo that he wants Volvo cars to compete with top end marques like BMW and Mercedes. Li attributes the Swedish brand’s struggling sales as compared to top flight automakers to the pricing of the models.

A new BMW 740i sedan and Mercedes-Benz S400 hybrid in the US retails for about $70,150 and $87,950 respectively which is more than double of Volvo’s $39,200 for its top of the range sedan, the Volvo S80. Li says Volvo need products to compete in that segment.

Speaking more on the overall progression to profitability, Li pointed out that 380,000 units had to be sold every year for Volvo to become profitable which is a far cry from the 335,000 units they sold last year, suffering a loss of $653 million. In order for Volvo to get an upper hand in the competition, they [Volvo] need to pump out more volume.

Part of the plan is also to create more awareness in the Chinese market of Volvo’s heritage of developing features such as air bags or catalytic converters. In regards to a 380,000 units every year, Li said that no decision has been made and that would require market studies, board and government approval.

He went on to say that he was happy with the Volvo buy branding it a historic opportunity and does not see any similar deals available in the near future. “It’s very difficult to find a good brand like Volvo you can buy. If Mercedes Benz wants to sell itself, I think Chinese companies would be interested”.

2011 Mercedes Benz S63 AMG – new 5.5 biturbo engine

Mercedes-Benz has released the 2011 S63 AMG which now comes with the same new engine seen in the facelifted CL63 AMG coupe. We’re referring to the 5.5-litre biturbo V8 which comes with spray-guided direct petrol injection and piezo injectors.

In standard form the engine produces 544 hp and 800 Nm of torque, but the addition of the AMG performance package pushes this up to 571 hp and 900 Nm. The difference between the standard and AMG package is the increase in the maximum charge pressure from 1.0 to 1.3 bar. In addition, the engine cover comes in genuine carbon fibre.

The S63 now uses the AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed sports transmission, which along with a new start stop system contributes to better fuel economy of 10.5 litres per 100km, which is 25% improved over the old naturally aspirated V8. Century mark acceleration takes just 4.5 seconds. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h (4.4 sec and 300 km/h for AMG Performance Package).

Inside the limo, the standard Passion leather upholstery has contrasting colour stitching, while optional equipment such as a Bang & Olufsen BeoSound sound system with 1200 watts and 15 speakers, acoustic lens tweeters in the A and B pillars and a new AMG instrument cluster, are available on request. Safety equipment includes Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Crosswind stabilisation, Torque Vectoring Brakes and Direct-Steer system.

This fast S sits on AMG triple-spoke light alloys fitted with 255/40 or 275/40 R19 tyres. AMG Performance Package adds AMG double-spoke forged 20-inch wheels, AMG Performance steering wheel with Alcantara inserts, and AMG trim in black piano lacquer/carbon fibre.

The S63 AMG will be offered in both short and a long wheelbase versions, and its market launch is expected at the end of September. Hi res gallery after the jump.

Mitsuoka Himiko special edition – only 20 to be made

Mitsuoka, famous for its old world styled Nissans and the child scaring Orochi, has unveiled the special edition Himiko roadster. Like the Orochi, the name Himiko has a story behind it.

Himiko is an ancient Shaman queen from ancient Japan who ruled over the people of Wa. She supposedly bewitched her people with magic and sorcery while ruling the country with assistance from her brother successfully. The designer of the car wanted to embody Himiko’s radiant beauty and dignity when combining the charm of classic car design with modern technology. The car is based on the Mazda MX-5′s platform with a stretched wheelbase.

Under that long bonnet is the MX-5’s 170 hp 2.0-litre engine mated to a five-speed manual or a 162 hp version of that unit with a six-speed auto. This special edition features a soft top, two-tone red and black colour scheme, leather upholstered interior and wood trim. While the exterior is uniquely styled, the cabin is pure MX-5. Production will be limited to 20 units, with each example costing US$56,500 in Japan.
