BREAKING: Proton revokes Lotus brand licensing from 1 Malaysia Racing Team!

Proton has just announced that it has revoked the Lotus brand licensing from the 1 Malaysia Racing Team led by Tony Fernandes. The team will continue to be called Lotus Racing till the end of this season but that will not be case in 2011. This also applies for the Team Lotus name that was recently announced for 2011.

The press release’s exact words were “with Proton’s agreement, Group Lotus has now terminated its licence to 1 Malaysia Racing Team to use the “Lotus Racing” brand in the 2011 and future Formula 1 seasons as a result of the flagrant and persistent breaches of the licence by 1 Malaysia Racing Team, which were damaging to the Lotus brand”. This is definitely not good news for the team.

It went on to add that it believes “neither 1 Malaysia Racing Team, nor any other company associated with Mr. Fernandes such as Tune Group Sdn Bhd or Team Lotus Ventures Limited, has the authority of Group Lotus to use any Lotus brand in the 2011 Formula 1 season”.

It was also revealed that the Tune Group’s recent rights acquisition of the Team Lotus name from a business formerly owned by David Hunt called Team Lotus Ventures Limited will not enable the Formula 1 team to use the classic name. Group Lotus said that it believes the so called rights have “no proper legal foundation”, as Hunt’s attempt to acquire the name in 1994 was ineffective. It was also said that Tony Fernandes knew this for a fact.

Proton also confirmed that it will take “all necessary steps” to protect the rights in the Lotus name, “including resisting any attempts by Mr. Fernandes or his companies, or any other unauthorized person, to use the Lotus name in the 2011 Formula 1 season”.

Chairman of both Proton Holdings Bhd and Group Lotus, Dato’ Sri Nadzmi Mohd. Salleh said, “We believe the Lotus brand to be one of the most valuable brands in Formula 1 today. We are the owners of this brand, and will take all necessary steps to protect it. Tony Fernandes has no rights to use the Lotus brand in the 2011 Formula 1 season, and we will strongly resist any attempts by him to use our brand without our permission and will withdraw our sponsorship of the Lotus Racing team.”

“To put it simply, Group Lotus is everything Lotus. The fact that 1 Malaysia Racing Team entered into an agreement with Group Lotus to use the brand means that both Mr. Fernandes and 1 Malaysia Racing Team recognises and acknowledges Group Lotus’ rights,” he added.

The press release also stated that Proton will withdraw its sponsorship of the Lotus Racing team for the 2011 season. If this revocation continues to be implemented, Fernandes will have no choice but to rename the team, but there could be other underlying issues. So what will happen to the Lotus Racing team? Only time will tell.

US made Hyundai Sonata recalled, local cars not affected

The current Hyundai Sonata is being recalled in the USA over a steering shaft problem. This recall exercise will involve 139,500 model year 2011 cars that were assembled at the company’s Alabama plant from December 2009 to this month.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report explains that “on some of these vehicles the steering column intermediate shaft universal joint connections may have been either improperly assembled or insufficiently tightened.” The worst case scenario is “a complete separation of compromised attachment of the connections, such that the driver could experience a loss of, or reduction in, steering capability increasing the risk of a crash.”

Sonatas brought in to dealers will have their shaft universal joint connections inspected for proper assembly. The power steering software will also be updated free of charge.

Local owners need not worry. Hyundai Motor Company has confirmed that Korean made Sonatas are not affected, and our market’s Sonata YF rolls out from HMC’s Asan plant in South Korea. Our sources have confirmed that there will be no recall in Malaysia. By the way, local spec Sonatas do not use the US market car’s EPS steering, but a hydraulic setup.

Bernie Ecclestone hints HD F1 broadcast as early as 2011

Bernie Ecclestone seems to be contradicting himself, but that’s in every Formula 1 fan’s favour. This is after reports stating that Formula 1 will be available in High Definition (HD) as early as 2011. We previously reported the F1 supremo as saying that the earliest they would broadcast in HD is 2012, but he said that it will be earlier than that. “I think what’s being produced at the moment is very, very good but I think we’ll be moving to High Definition, probably next year,” Bernie said speaking to the BBC.

According to sources, the 2010 Formula 1 is being recorded in HD, but this feed is not available to broadcasters. Formula 1 fans in any region, if they had the chance, would rather watch the races in HD. It could very much be the case here in Malaysia as well.

Back home, some Formula 1 races are broadcasted on Astro Beyond’s ESPN HD channel, but they are not in HD format, according to an Astro call centre executive. Nevertheless I can’t help but notice that the quality is slightly better compared to when it is shown on the Standard Definition ESPN-Star channel.

Ecclestone says Korean GP track readiness cutting it fine

This year’s Formula 1 contenders still have four races to battle out each other for both the Driver’s and Constructor’s Championships. However if recent reports are to be believed, that might not be the case. According to Bernie Ecclestone, it could possibly just be three races, worst-case scenario that is. This is after the Formula 1 boss admitted that there is a possibility that the Yeongam track will not be ready for its inaugural race on the 24th of October. Ecclestone said that the track didn’t pass its first crucial FIA inspection.

Apparently according to FIA rules, a new circuit should be inspected and given the green light 90 days before its scheduled race. It has now been reported that the next inspection will take place after Suzuka. This essentially means that the Formula 1 circus will actually be en route to Korea without even knowing if track conditions will be acceptable enough to hold a race. “It’s quite dangerous what we’ve done actually but it’s a case of ‘do we cancel the race or not?’ They say it’s all going to be OK, so we hope they are right,” Ecclestone speaking in a worried tone.

Paris-bound Opel GTC Concept pumps out 290hp

Opel has released more information and pictures of the GTC Concept ahead of the Paris Motor Show. The German-based company, who sell their cars in the UK under the Vauxhall brand, has revealed details about the car’s power figures. The GTC Concept’s turbocharged 2.0-litre four-pot engine is able to generate 290hp. This is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission that complements its power with a limited slip differential.

Help keeping the car stable is Opel’s FlexRide suspension and a crank rear axle with a Watt’s link. The GTC show car for Paris sits on 21-inch wheels, optimized with carbon-fiber inserts which enclose the center caps. This is finished off in a liquid metal red exterior colour scheme.

A picture gallery with interior images is available after the jump.

Lamborghini and Blancpain team up to produce a special edition Gallardo LP570-4

Paris has got another beauty to showcase in the upcoming motorshow, which is none other than the special edition Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Blancpain Edition. The Italian brand has teamed up with the world-renowned watchmaker for the second time, as they also are in partnership for the Super Trofeo race series.

The first thing you will notice is the “shoutey” exterior made up of a variety of aerodynamic and visual touch-ups. This includes Skorpius wheels with yellow-painted brake calipers, carbon-ceramic composite discs, matte black paintwork and carbon fibre components all around the car.

Most visually prominent is the huge rear spoiler, which has the task of improving downforce, along with an engine cover that optimizes airflow into the appropriate sections. Under the engine cover is the mighty 5.2-litre Lamborghini V10 engine, which generates 570hp, lifted directly off the Superleggera production car.

Unique on this car is the fact that it is the lightest road going model in Lamborghini’s line-up as it only weighs 1340kg. This allows it to accomplish a dash to 100km/h in just 3.4 seconds, going on to reach a top speed of 320km/h.

Inside, prospective buyers will be greeted with an interior completely finished in black Alcantara with yellow accents and carbon fibre. Looking at the car, I can’t help but think that this could be a possible visual successor to the Diablo GT. What do you think? Have your say. Picture gallery is available after the jump.

Japanese consortium working on self-powered car components?

A consortium of Japanese companies made up 21 Japanese big hitters that include Toyota and Honda are working on technologies that will do away with auxiliary cables, wires to power sensors and switches.

They plan to develop components that do not need an external power source but instead, uses energy such as vibration, heat or light to be converted into electricity. It has been compared to the mechanism found in a mechanical watch that winds itself up trough the movement of a person’s arm, thereby doing away with batteries altogether.

The technology will save on the need for cables that send power to the long list of sensors available in modern cars today. If the technology is employed, it could save weight and help improve fuel efficiency. Not to mention add to the car’s coolness factor.

“The consortium is still studying the issue from various angles and exchanging information among its members. As such, nothing has been decided yet regarding joint development or commercialization,” said Toyota Motor Corp. spokesmen Paul Nolasco.

Not the first to toy with the idea, Pirelli already uses similar technology in its “Cyber Tyre”. It uses a vibration-powered computer chip, which provides information such as air pressure and road conditions to the car.

Other technologies include ones being researched by GM and BMW, which involve turning engine or exhaust heat to electricity to power vehicle electronics. It is called energy harvesting and has been around for some time. The only thing stopping companies from using it, is its high cost and the added size of the tech.

Production Bugatti 16C Galibier to arrive in 2013, Bugatti Veyron production to end soon!

Say what you will about the current economic climate, but if you make it, they will buy it. Bugatti in particular has been quite successful in those terms. Now comes news that Bugatti will be adding a new model to their inventory.

According to certain sources, the Bugatti 16C Galibier concept will be put into production. It seems that the company will be ending the production of its Veyron models real soon, replacing it with the four-door sedan. Autoweek reports that Bugatti has already built 260 Veyrons, out of the 300 planned.

The limited edition 16C Galibier will still use the Veyron’s 8.0 litre W16 engine, this time employing superchargers instead of turbos. Its horsepower figure is expected to hover over the 800 mark, compared to the Veyron’s 1000hp, or its crazy Super Sport cousin producing 1200hp.

Design of the 16C Galibier car has been questionable right from its reveal at the Frankfurt Motorshow in 2009. But that shouldn’t stop the rich from indulging themselves. As it will be a limited edition, only 300 models will be produced and is expected to go on sale sometime in 2013, with an estimated price tag of $1.5 million.

GALLERY: Live images from the Singapore GP!

Greetings from Singapore! It was an exciting race under the lights at the Marina Bay Circuit where Fernando Alonso drove superbly to lead from start to finish. There was plenty of drama as well – the collision between Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton which saw the latter retire, Schumacher clashing with Nick Heidfeld in his comeback race and Robert Kubica overtaking like a hero in the latter stages of the race. Speaking of that, we haven’t seen so much overtaking in the Singapore GP before!

But one of the most dramatic moments of the race for me and fellow fans seated on the pit straight grandstand was the sight of Heikki Kovalainen’s Lotus T127 going up in flames right in front of us. We saw the Finn’s car catching fire on the screen, but instead of going into the pits, he drove the by now engulfed car towards the start/finish line. He then jumped out and played fireman, receiving great applause from the crowd for his efforts!

That happened one lap before Alonso took the chequered flag just ahead of a tenacious Seb Vettel, who was sniffing away at the Ferrari’s tail all day. Mark Webber took third to maintain his championship lead.

I’ve covered F1 races from the press room and Paddock Club before, but this was actually my first time watching as a spectator from the grandstand, and it was much more exciting. Great atmosphere, loud crowd, plenty of ooohs and ahhhs – my ears are still buzzing! Our kind hosts, Shell, provided us with Kangaroo TV sets so I could hear the commentary and watch the race on my personal screen, but even with earphones on, my eardrums vibrated painfully everytime a car zoomed pass. Earplugs would have solved the issue, but I would then have to sacrifice commentary!

Anyway, it was a great race and a great experience. Here are some pictures I took to “share the atmosphere” with you. They are after the jump. Enjoy!

Fernando Alonso wins the Singapore GP!

Fernando Alonso and Ferrari have won the 2010 Singapore GP, after starting from pole position. The Spaniard managed to fend off closest in-race rival Sebastian Vettel from Red Bull and remained in first place through out the entire race. Red Bull’s other driver, championship leader Mark Webber managed to cross the finish line in third place.

Fourth place went to McLaren’s Jenson Button followed by Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg, Williams’ Rubens Barrichello and Renault’s Robert Kubica. Force India’s Adrian Sutil, Williams’ Nico Hulkenberg and Ferrari’s Felipe Massa made up the rest of the top ten finishers. Massa finished in tenth after starting from the back end of the grid. Only 16 drivers finished today’s race with Heikki Kovalainen being the last. The only surviving Virgin, of Lucas di Grassi’s finished in 15th. Both Hispania drivers retired.

This year’s grand prix around the street circuit of the Marina Bay was anything but unentertaining. The start was pretty much incident free and Alonso managed to keep his car in front Vettel’s Red Bull who had a slightly better start. However an early retirement by Force India driver Vitantonio Liuzzi (due to an contact) forced the stewards to deploy the Safety Car in the early stages of the race.

Several drivers took the opportunity to change tires and as the dust settled Alonso was still up in front with Vettel in second. Hamilton was running third ahead of teammate Button and Rosberg. Felipe Massa who started from last place on the grid managed to get himself as high as 16th, following an early pit stop and the deployment of the Safety Car.

The race continued on with not-so-significant events. Alonso kept on leading and was slowly easing his way ahead of Vettel but the lead didn’t breach the 10-second mark. Mid-way through the race, Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi had a contact with Michael Schumacher but both cars escaped undamaged. The Safety Car was deployed for the second time when Kobayashi ran wide just minutes later and slammed the barriers at Turn 18. Hispania’s Bruno Senna then crashed into the back of his Sauber.

Green flag was drawn soon after but the it wasn’t a good restart for Lewis Hamilton. The World Champion was battling with Mark Webber for third place. They came into contact and Hamilton was unable to continue hence he had no choice but to retire. Schumacher was involved in another incident, this time with Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld who took over driving duties from Pedro de la Rosa. Heidfeld was forced to retire while Schumacher managed to continue, but had to change his front wing and that dropped him down the field. He eventually finished the race in 13th place.

At the closing stages of the race Heikki Kovalainen suffered from a spin and moments later his Lotus was on fire. He managed to stop his car on the main straight and he along with some marshals managed to put the fire out. As mentioned he was classified as a finisher. Further up the field, Vettel was able to put more pressure on Alonso but failed to overtake. The gap between the two was about 0.2 seconds when they crossed the finish line.

Hispania’s Christian Klien, Virgin’s Timo Glock and Lotus’ Jarno Trulli made up the 8-driver retirement list. Trulli suffered from a hydraulics problem. In the Driver’s Championship, Webber is still ahead, now with 202 points. Alonso is now closer than ever with 191 points. Hamilton, Vettel and Button all have 182, 181 and 177 points respectively.

Red Bull is still going strong in the Constructor’s Championship with 383 points. McLaren and Ferrari both have 359 and 316 points. With just four races remaining, the fraternity how heads to Suzuka for the Japanese GP.

The full results can be viewed here.
