Proton Inspira: Value adding and providing good value

The soon to be launched Proton Inspira has generated so much opinion from so many people, and it’s not just a topic of discussion at the mamak shops, but in the Dewan Rakyat as well. You might have read about outspoken Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Moktar Radin blasting the national car company for not developing its own car, going as far as calling for Proton to be closed down for embarrassing the nation. Is that fair?

While I myself have questioned Proton for “going full circle” (first Proton was a Lancer, latest Proton is a Lancer) early in the day, the rationale behind why the Inspira is based on a Lancer makes perfect sense. Proton has always defended the call, maintaining that it’s a “very strategic business decision” that’s win-win for both Proton and Mitsubishi.

At a recent media briefing, Proton’s management reiterated that it made little financial sense to build a car in this segment from scratch, as the small volume won’t help it recoup the investment. It takes about RM600-700 million to do so, while a OEM collaboration (as Proton MD Datuk Syed Zainal prefers to call it over “rebadging”) takes up just RM250 million. The process also just took 17 months compared to a full two years if Proton would have worked solo. Not worth it for a projected 1,600 units per month, they say.

We concur. Proton is a small company and its resources can be better used for other purposes, like developing core models such as the Persona replacement model, which is in the pipeline. “We are not the only ones in the world to do this (OEM collaboration),” said Datuk Syed Zainal, pointing us to PSA Peugeot Citroen using the Mitsubishi Outlander for their SUVs as example. “Having said that, we will not forget why Proton was set up,” assured the boss, who wants to make it clear that this is not the end of homegrown products. However, Proton will not be swayed by the detractors, and is set to continue this trend of collaborating with other OEMs for its non core models.

Proton’s MD also revealed plans to produce and export the Inspira as a Mitsubishi, pretty much like what Perodua does for Daihatsu in Indonesia with the Myvi. But unlike that deal, the Proton built Lancer will most probably use Lancer styling. In order to seal this contract assembly deal, Proton is gunning to achieve a quality threshold that will pass the Mitsubishi audit, and this effort to prove themselves will be good for Inspira owners. There are four MMC quality officers on the Inspira production line at present, and Proton has hired several retired MMC personnel to assist them as well.

If you’ve read our earlier preview drive report, you’d know that the Inspira feels very different to drive compared to the Lancer, mainly due to the retuned suspension settings by Proton. And according to Syammin Noori Arifin, the lead ride and handling engineer for the Inspira, Proton will push for this setting in the Lancer that it will built, if the deal goes through.

He’s happy with what the 15-man team achieved, but admitted that they had a good base to work on. Proton calls what it has done to the Lancer “value adding”. Read about the changes here.

How different does the Inspira feel on the move? Very. The ride comfort over rough roads is improved (Lancer ride is good for such big wheels), not just because of the higher profile rubber, but the spot on damping. Pushing it to the max was a confidence inspiring affair; while the suspension has more travel and is much softer than the Lancer’s, body movements in fast cornering is controlled and allows one to “lean” on the car’s limits with relative confidence.

The body moves around quite a bit, but this is intentional as Proton wanted a fluid ride that “breathes” like the best from Europe instead of a firm setup. I reckon that the Lancer will probably have the edge in absolute grip, but the Inspira better relays how much it has in reserve. Proton also worked to rein in the Lancer’s tail at the limits, going for oneness between the front and rear ends. Not sure if things will be the same if a customer fits bigger wheels – Proton hasn’t started testing this set of dampers on 17/18-inch wheels yet.

I only tried the 1.8 manual (the fastest variant of the three), and found NVH levels to be noticeably lower than the Lancer. The narrower tyres with a less aggressive pattern, the more isolated ride and the absence of the CVT are among the reasons for this, I reckon. Although eager, this 4B series of engines aren’t the smoothest in town, but a self shifter (very light clutch, slightly sticky into fourth gear on our tester) improves the experience.

The “Lotus Ride & Handling” tag isn’t the only badge to not appear for the Inspira (it’s a Proton effort after all), but Proton will replace the familiar High-Line, Base-Line naming format too. In comes Standard, Executive and Premium variant codes as replacement.

We hear that the Prime Minister himself will unveil the Inspira at Proton’s COE facility on the 10th of November, so stay tuned. Earlier this week, Proton announced that 1,100 names are already in their order books.

Renault Megane RS spotted again in Langkawi!

Loads of yellow Renault Megane RS hot hatches were spotted in the Langkawi port earlier today by our very own Harvinder Singh while on assignment in Langkawi for the Mitsubishi ASX group media test drive.

This yellow hot hatch sports a 2.0 litre engine force inducted with a twin scroll turbocharger, making a peak power of 250 PS at 5,500rpm and a peak torque of 340Nm at 3,000rpm, all at the tip of the driver’s fingers and toes – there’s no twin clutch wizardry here – it’s all manual action via a 6-speed manual transmission!

The previous generation Megane RS was sold in Malaysia for RM235,000, about 10% more than what you’d pay for a Golf GTI. From what I hear the Megane RS is a more driver-focused machine – yet to try one! Look after the jump for a full gallery of the Langkawi cars.

Proton Saga Facelift Artist Renderings – debut at KLIMS?

Here are artist renderings of what the upcoming Proton Saga Facelift could look like, created by Theophilus Chin based on our previous sightings of the car (once in a parking lot and another time on the move).

I highly doubt that a price-sensitive model like the Saga would come with the projector headlamps that Theophilus has given the renderings above though (nothing wrong with a little wishful thinking eh?), but the rest of the details were done based on the spyshots, such as the new shape for the headlamps and the front grille, as well as the reflectors on the rear bumper.

If you want a recap of how the taped up Saga facelift test units look like, you can refer to our two previous posts or check them out after the jump where we’ve embedded them for reference purposes.

We expect the 2011 model year Proton Saga facelift to be officially unveiled at the KL International Motor Show 2010 at the end of the year, as Proton has previously indicated that it will be unveiling a facelift model there.

Nissan recalls 2 million vehicles over ignition relay problem – locally, the K12 March gets a special service campaign

nissan march k12

Right, it’s recall time again, folks. Next up to the base is Nissan, which has issued a global recall of 2.14 million vehicles, its third largest ever such exercise, over an ignition problem that may stall the engine.

The problem lies with a faulty relay in the ignition, and affects vehicles produced from August 2003 through July 2006. Nissan said that in extreme cases, the engine will stall and will not be able to start. On the recall list are a number of models, from compacts such as the March/Micra, Cube and Note right up to the likes of the Tiida sedan and Infiniti QX56 SUV.

The company said that the rectification would require about 30 mins, and that no accidents were reported to have been caused by the defect.

Meanwhile, in relation to this, Edaran Tan Chong Motor has issued a statement saying that Nissan has confirmed that all its Serena, Navara, Sylphy and Latio models sold in Malaysia are not affected by the recall. ETCM however added that some fully imported Nissan March units (of the previous generation K12) sold by it might be affected by the exercise.

As such, the company has started a safety service campaign for all K12s sold by it, and the safety check can be done by appointment at the nearest Tan Chong Express Auto Service centre or during the scheduled maintenance service. All labour costs and replacement parts for the safety check will be free-of-charge.

Renault Mégane III spotted in KLIA – and it’s an RS, no less!

renault megane rs

Are we to expect a French-flavoured car launch season early next year? No sooner than photos were snapped of the Peugeot RCZ and 308 CC at JPJ Putrajaya – possibly going through type approval – do we have a snap of another French offering.

Reader Prem took this photo of a yellow Renault Mégane III running on trade plates near the KLIA, and the photo indicates that it’s an RS variant. Which would imply that the 250hp 2.0 litre turbocharged, six-speed manual hatchback is presumably the next item of Gallic flair slated for these shores. Sounds delectable if it is.

UPDATE: Reader Salleh also sent in this photo above of a Megane III RS parked next to a Subaru Impreza at the Dengkil R&R – considering Tan Chong brings in both Subaru and Nissan, were they Tan Chong employees on a twin test session?

Peugeot 207 Sedan – our first impressions of the T33

pug 207 1

The RM75-85,000 car segment has certainly become that much more exciting in recent months. After years of what has really been a two-horse race, the slew of new contenders that have emerged or are coming about in this bustling segment is nothing short of excellent news to the consumer, who by the next few weeks or so will have a couple more choices to pick from.

That B-segment domain that has been owned by Toyota’s Vios and Honda’s City has since seen the inclusion of the larger C-segment Kia Forte into the mix, and then Mazda came along with its Mazda2 sometime back. This month or so is where it all gets truly interesting – first, there was the arrival of the Thai-made Ford Fiesta, and early next month will see two more joining the fray, one being another C-segment offering, the Inspira (granted, it, like the Forte, shouldn’t exactly be in the segment, but with pricing considerably dictating purchase decisions here, like it or not, the Proton is effectively lumped in, albeit primarily in manual form).

pug 207 4

The other, which arrives a bit earlier sometime next week, is the Peugeot 207 Sedan. Codenamed the T33 Project, the vehicle is essentially an updated 206 Sedan based on the 206 chassis, built in Gurun for the local market as well as the Asean region. Ahead of its market launch, we were invited to have a quick preview session with the car earlier in the week.

BMW On Demand – hourly rentals available at BMW World

bmw welt 2

The next time you’re in Munich, have a fair bit of free time and fancy doing the drive around by yourself bit, you might want to rent a BMW from BMW.

The automaker has begun a pilot project called BMW On Demand, where all its current models can be hired at the BMW Welt (World) in Munich – the mobility service offers rentals on an hourly basis. The project will initially run over a period of twelve months, and will be extended to other locations in Munich in a second phase.

While BMW isn’t the first car company to run such a programme, On Demand is perfect for those who want to sample what the brand’s different model types are all about – you can take a 5 Series sedan for that important meeting on a weekday, and then switch over to a Z4 for a trip into the countryside during the weekend. And, with the M models available too, think of the jollies you can have, say, bombing down the B-roads to Salzburg in an M3 sedan …

bmw welt 1

The desired BMW model can be booked in the colour and with the equipment the driver prefers. Staff are available at a dedicated BMW on Demand counter at BMW Welt to provide individual advice. Bookings can be made directly at the counter or via the BMW Welt website.

Ah yes, the rates. The hourly hire fees vary depending on the model and the time of day, of course. A 1 Series, for example, costs 16 euros an hour, a 5 Series 23 euros an hour. At the daytime rate, between 9am-6pm, a maximum of four hours will be charged, while a maximum of two hours at the night rate goes between 6pm-9am. All the necessary insurance premiums, plus cleaning and servicing, are included. The hire charge as well as the fuel used is payable only by credit card, and vehicles are collected from and returned to BMW Welt centrally.

While the new F25 X3 pictured above was on display at the Welt during a recent trip there, I’d think that one’s not quite on the rental list yet.

Peugeot RCZ and 308CC spotted in JPJ Putrajaya!

It’s an onslaught of Pugs! These two new Peugeots were spotted by reader Akmal in Putrajaya – a sexy silver Peugeot RCZ and a white Peugeot 308CC. If they’re already hanging around JPJ Putrajaya presumably for type approval it’s likely that they’ll be launched sometime in the first half of next year.

Next up – we pretty much already know that the 5008 MPV will be here as well. I can think of two other models that have the potential for sales over here – the 408 which is basically a C-segment 308-based sedan and the 508, Peugeot’s version of the Citroen C5.

Considering the insanely expensive price of the Audi TT here in Malaysia, I am curious how much that RCZ will go for. We’ve already driven the Peugeot RCZ – read our test drive review.

New Toyota Prius lowered price – RM139,900

The Toyota Prius will be priced at RM139,900 in the Peninsular Malaysia and RM141,500 in Sabah and Sarawak effective today. This is a drop of about RM35,000 in Peninsular Malaysia from the previous price of RM175,000.

That’s how much that remaining half-price excise duty means – RM35,000. Our prices are still higher than Langkawi’s prices as we still have 10% sales tax despite import duties and excise duties being 0% now. Just to recap – when the Budget 2011 was announced, the Malaysian government lowered the duties for hybrid vehicles below 2,000cc of displacement to 0% for both excise and import duty. Previously, the government gave 100% exemption of import duty but only 50% exemption for excise duty.

It looks like our estimation of the new Toyota Prius pricing after the complete removal of excise duties by the government was pretty much spot on after all. We estimated a price of around RM140,149.30 with a tax savings of about RM34,850.70. We calculated that based on the Langkawi price of RM127,408.45 and adding 10% sales tax. So we can assume that UMW Toyota is transferring 100% of the benefits of the tax break to the consumers.

New Toyota Prius

Next up would be the Honda Civic Hybrid – an announcement from Honda Malaysia should be coming soon before the end of the year. Our pricing estimation for the Honda Civic Hybrid was RM111,078, a drop of about RM18,902 from the current price of RM129,980.

At the new price of RM139,900, the Toyota Prius really starts becoming very tempting. The new price is also below RM150k so it becomes more favorable in terms of claiming capital allowances – that should start driving up sales for the Prius as a company car as well.

We tried the Prius (watch our real life road test review on Driven or our Japanese closed track test drive on this blog) and found that it could give significantly lower fuel consumption without the driver consciously trying hard to save fuel – that’s what a good hybrid should be doing, not forcing you to mind your throttle to the point that it becomes distracting and unenjoyable.

BMW recalls 150,000 vehicles in the US over fuel pump-related issues

bmw x6

Those hits just keep on coming. Yet again do we have another recall, this one in the US and from BMW. Following the recall issued earlier in the month regarding defective brake vacuum pumps (which translated into a ‘technical service campaign’ locally), BMW has – through its North American office – issued a recall for more than 150,000 vehicles made in 2007-2010 to fix faulty fuel pumps, primarily high-pressure units in cars equipped with twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engines featuring BMW’s direct fuel injection system.

The company says that affected vehicles may experience a failure of the high-pressure fuel pump, with symptoms including long-crank engine starting times along along with the illumination of the “Service Engine Soon” light. In certain cases, the driver may experience reduced engine performance in a safe mode accompanied by a tone and the illumination of the “Engine Malfunction” light.

bmw z4

Approximately 130,000 vehicles are potentially affected, with about 40,000 expected to require a new pump. BMW USA said it will replace the high-pressure fuel pump and do a software update for the necessary vehicles. Affected models are the 2007–2010 335i, 2008–2010 135i, 535i and X6 xDrive35i and the 2010 Z4 Roadster sDrive35i.

Separately, a further 20,800 2008 normally-aspirated X5s in the US were also recalled to have their low-pressure fuel pump replaced. BMW said that should the fuel pump fail and the engine stop running, the steering and the brakes would still remain operational even with the loss of power assist for the steering and brakes.

The company said that there have been no reports of accidents or injuries connected to the recalls.
