Proton in talks to produce Proton EMAS concept car

Proton has entered talks with a few companies in Japan and Europe to produce a production version of the Proton Emas Concept which was unveiled by Proton and Italdesign-Giugiaro earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show 2010. The discussions are expected to be concluded by the end of this year.

“There were discussions in terms of technology, platforms and how we can work with others to source engines to us. The current trend is to come up with cars, including those using hybrid technology, that are fuel-efficient and produce low amounts of carbon emission. As Proton is a competitive company, we will take on this concept and make it a reality,” said Proton managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir.

Proton will be targeting the South-East Asian market as well as the Indian market with the new Proton EMAS. As the EMAS is a small and compact car, it should hit all the right criteria to be positioned favorably in India’s car tax system which takes into account car dimensions.

It was also revealed earlier this year that Lotus would be developing its own version of the EMAS, and a Lotus concept car based on the EMAS called the Lotus City Car Concept was displayed at the Paris Motor Show earlier this month. The Lotus version of the car would have a more premium and sportier positioning, and be equipped with more powerful engines.

Smart to sell a Nissan-derived B-segment car in the US

Smart USA has announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Nissan on the collaboration of a new vehicle for sale in the US market. The car, a five-door, B-segment gasoline engine model derived from Nissan, is expected to go on sale in late 2011.

The sketches provide an inkling as to what the future model, which will be built on a new global platform in one of Nissan’s factories in the US, might look like. “The new vehicle will expand smart USA’s product lineup, offering five-seat capacity while maintaining the core principles of efficiency and conservation,” said smart USA president Jill Lajdziak.

This looks to be the first step in the broad cooperation plan Smart’s parent company Daimler and the Renault-Nissan alliance have planned, as an interim before new products fully jointly developed by Daimler, Nissan and Renault arrive in the market in 2013.

BMW 1-Series M Coupe reveals more in Paris town centre

You’d think that with a motor show as big as Paris, there wouldn’t be anything worth a second look outside the venue it was held at. Well, apparently there was, and it was none other than the new BMW 1-Series M Coupe.

Shots of the car being partly revealed, taken in front of the Arc de Triomphe, were posted on the M-power.com website. Apart from being pictured in front of the most accident-prone roundabout in France, the shots revealed a camouflaged headlamp, side front portion of the bumper, air dam and a quad pipe exhaust.

The car is rumoured to produce 322 hp from a retuned version of the twin-turbo engine found in the 135i. It is also expected to have a limited run of 2,700 units, if some reports are to be believed. Until then, enjoy pictures of what some reporters probably missed in Paris. More images available after the jump.

Kimi confirms an F1 return will not be with Renault

We can officially rule Kimi out for a return to Formula 1 in 2011, at least not with Renault F1. He is also quite miffed that the team has been using his name for their own ends.

It was previously reported that Renault team principal Eric Boullier confirmed that Kimi “was on the radar” as he contacted them. He went on to speculate openly about Vitaly Petrov’s future with the team, if replaced with Raikkonen.

“I am very disappointed with the way they (Renault) have used my name for their own marketing purposes. At no point have I even seriously considered driving for Renault and I can assure that it is 100% certain that I will not drive for Renault in 2011. My managers have weeks ago been in contact, once, with Renault’s team leader (Eric Boullier). That is all,” said a very angry Raikkonen.

Kimi is currently racing in the World Rally Championship in a Citroen C4 under the Red Bull Junior Team. He recently finished top of the podium at the French Rallye Vosgien.

Lotus Racing to use Red Bull gearboxes and hydraulics

Lotus Racing has announced recently that they will be using gearboxes and hydraulic systems from Red Bull technology from 2011 onwards. The agreement has been said to be a multi-year contract, without giving a specific time line.

“The gearbox / hydraulics package obviously plays a critical role in the performance of the car, not just on track but in design and packaging terms, and this deal gives our design and aero teams a very exciting platform to work with. The removal of the double diffusers in 2011 will allow the whole grid to tighten up the rear bodywork and mechanical structures around the gearbox, and this supply deal will allow us to capitalise on that with our 2011 car. Exciting times lie ahead!” said Mike Gascoyne, Lotus Racing Chief Technical Officer.

Christian Horner, Red Bull Racing Team principal was also pleased about the decision stating, “The fact that Red Bull Technology has been chosen to be a supplier to another team despite its short history demonstrates how much we have achieved since our first season. We very much look forward to working with Lotus Racing from 2011 onwards.”

Gone are the days where the promise of potentially good race results are wiped out by bad hydraulics?

Paris 2010: Renault DeZir concept is a stunning lady in red

Motor shows are not motor shows without the concept cars, and one of my personal favourites for Paris 2010 is this – the Renault DeZir concept. With curves in all the right places and wearing a beautiful red dress, I actually enjoyed photographing Mademoiselle DeZir and stayed on for awhile just to admire it after the snapping.

More than just a flight of fancy, DeZir is the first project to have been led by new design boss Laurens van den Acker and marks the beginning of a sequence of concept cars that will provide an insight into Renault’s new styling vision, like the now dead Nagare movement at Mazda, which van den Acker created when he was with the Zoom-Zoom company.

This seductress was designed to evoke ‘simple’, ‘sensuous’ and ‘warm’ feelings, according to Renault. Along with the cute Zoe, DeZir “lays the foundations for the brand’s forthcoming vehicles’ design cues”.

The vertically-mounted 24 kWh lithium-ion battery is located behind the seats and provides the car with a range of 160 km. The electric motor is the same unit used in Renault’s Z.E. range, although it’s located in the middle of the car here and has more go: 150 hp and 226 Nm. The tubular steel frame and suspension of the showcar comes from the Megane Trophy race car while the body is made from Kevlar.

It looks slippery and it is; drag coefficient (Cd) is rated at 0.25. Renault says that this KERS equipped concept accelerates from 0 to 50 km/h in two seconds flat.
