Toyota to assemble Prius in Thailand for Asian markets

Toyota Prius

The recent hybrid-related announcement in Budget 2011 may have been cheery news for potential hybrid adopters, but here’s where it gets even better, especially for those looking closely at the Toyota Prius.

Toyota Motor Thailand is to begin production of the third-generation Prius hybrid, with the vehicle set for its soft launch on October 21 and its Thai market debut next month. The batteries and engine will be shipped in from Japan for Thai production.

Following the Camry hybrid, the ZVW30 will be TMT’s second locally-assembled hybrid. Thailand is the third country to build the Prius after Japan and China, and the vehicle will be exported to other Asian markets to meet rising demands – the assumption is of course that when Thai exports begin, Malaysia will be taking the Prius from here instead of from Japan.

Potentially, dependent on the Thai-made vehicle’s pricing, this would mean an even cheaper Prius in Malaysia. UMW Toyota is currently in the midst of carrying out a revision on the price of the Prius following the full exemption of the import/excise duty for hybrids. How much the Thai-made vehicle will figure towards the final revised price remains to be seen – we’ll just have to wait and see what the final numbers are.

BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën to expand cooperation by jointly developing hybrid systems

BMW PSA logo

Having enjoyed a fruitful cooperation on engines thus far, BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën is set to expand on the level of colloboration, with the joint development of hybrid components for front-wheel drive vehicles next on the cards.

The components will be used in front-wheel-drive vehicles with electrified drive trains. BMW and PSA state that joint development and component production, as well as shared purchasing, will allow not just standardisation of key elements for electric vehicles, but mean lower costs for both partners in the long run.

Earlier in the year, both companies agreed to develop the next generation of their jointly designed Prince four-cylinder petrol engine, which will meet EU 6 requirements.

Go the luxury route with Nissan’s GT-R facelift – fancy being an Egoist?

egoist gt-r

It sounds a bit pompous, what with a name like that, but there’s nothing wrong with being self-involved, especially if it’s exclusivity you’re looking for.

Aside from the usual fare editions that have come about with Nissan’s facelifted GT-R, there’s the Egoist version, which the company says is an exclusive luxury edition ‘created by Takumi, or “master with greatest skills.”‘

egoist gt-r 2

The Egoist allows each customer to tailor his ride according to indvidual taste. It starts with a combination of interior colours to choose from – there are 20 selections in all, with four upper area interior colors and 10 lower area interior colors. Once you’ve selected the colour scheme that you want, the parts of the interior are shipped off to leather specialists Seton Company in Germany, where master craftsmen sew and stick carefully selected leather by hand.

The seats in the Egoist feature an exclusive quilted design with single and double stitching combined in a reticular pattern. Enhanced body grip performance, smoothness and fit are all provided for in the design.

Next, there’s a Bose precision sound system that’s tuned to you, quite litreally – the sound quality is adjusted exclusively for each owner, depending on individual driving position. The model also gets specially developed carbon composite-based woofers, which offer high rigidity and damping.

The car also features a Wajima lacquer (Maki-e) steering wheel GT-R emblem, created by Sakae Kubota, an accredited traditional Japanese lacquer craftsman. The emblem’s deep coloring and glaze will deepen and richen as time goes by, which shouldn’t be a bad thing if you view it every day.

Of course, the flashy bits don’t get left out in all this exclusivity, with some common-to-SpecV parts strapped on for the ride. The Egoist adopts the dry carbon rear spoiler from there, as well as the latter’s Rays forged alloy wheels, though here it’s finished in a new five-layer Blue Sword Chrome shade. A titanium exhaust system completes the list.

Suzuki recalls Swift over problem with the door mirrors

suzy swift

Here we go yet again. Suzuki announced late last week that it is recalling a total of 90,617 units of its Swift hatchback in Japan to fix a problem with the cars’ door mirrors. A further 192,000 vehicles sold globally are also possibly subject to repairs (might the cars sold here be on the list, one wonders?)

Suzuki said that over time, vehicle vibration could loosen the screws used to secure the door mirrors, causing them to dislodge or fall off. The rectification work involves using adhesive to further secure the screws. Thus far, 77 complaints regarding the defect have been reported in Japan, but there have been no accidents due to it.

The recall, which began last weekend, applies to Swifts produced between May 2007 and September 2009. It also affects 19,426 vehicles sold in Japan manufactured by Suzuki for sale by Nissan, these being the MR Wagon, Cervo and Moco.

2011 Nissan GT-R facelift – full details unveiled!

nissan gt-r 1

Nissan has announced the details on its model year 2011 DBA-R35 GT-R, which features a large number of enhancements as part of its mid-life facelift. The list includes a refreshed exterior and revised interior as well as improved engine output and torque, greater fuel efficiency, revised handling and new wheels and tyres.

Six versions of the GT-R will be available in Japan – the Pure, Black and Premium editions as well as a SpecV version. Also in the lineup is a new racing circuit use-only Club Track edition and an ultra-exclusive Egoist version that can be custom-ordered according to each individual customer’s tastes.

nissan gt-r 2

Mechanically, the VR38DETT’s output has now been bumped up to 530 PS (523 hp) at 6,400rpm, with maximum torque of 612 Nm available from 3,200 to 6,000rpm, and it wears a new red colour engine cover to denote that. The output increase is accomplished from upping the turbo’s boost pressure, reworking the valve timing and air mixture ratios as well as from improvements to air inflow and gas outflow – the air intake inlet and sections of the exhaust feature larger diameter piping.

All this, with improved fuel economy – the car gets 8.5km per litre in 10-15 cycle mode, the claim goes – and cleaner emissions to boot. Transmission-related changes include a new SAVE mode to help improve fuel economy by modifying the shift schedules. Elsewhere, the car gets a 2WD mode to help facilitate easier exits from tight parking lots – the system only works at speeds below 10 kph and with the steering wheel turned more than halfway.

nissan gt-r 6

Outside, the car features a new front bumper with double rectifier fins and high intensity white LED lights, which are also to be found at the rear as fog lamps. The bumper helps to increase front downforce by about 10%, while also reducing air resistance inside the engine compartment and improving the radiator’s cooling efficiency.

Cooling in other areas has improved as well – that for the underfloor and exhaust is enhanced by extending the rear diffuser and the inclusion of a new rear bumper outlet to allow improved excavation of air.

nissan gt-r 4

The facelift gets a new aluminium free-piston shock absorber design, offering more precise damping force, faster load shifts and reduced friction, the last to give improved ride comfort. Other suspension changes include revisions to the spring rates and stabiliser bar at the front, along with a reworked caster to offer better straight line stability and improved cornering ability. A new 390mm rotor also gets included in the mix, offering improved braking force and fade resistance as well as extended rotor life.

The car sits on new, lighter forged aluminum-alloy 10-spoke wheels made by Rays, finished in a new deep gloss Hyper Blue Black Chrome colour, which has five-layers of paint coating. The new wheels work with Dunlop SP Sport MAXX GT 600 DSST CTT tires, which features a new compound to offer improved tyre grip.

nissan gt-r engine

To enhance rigidity further, the car gets a lightweight carbon composite/aluminium honeycomb strut bar in the engine compartment and an additional support member in the passenger side of the instrument panel.

Not much in the way of change for the interior, with dress-up items being the main draw. Besides a newly shaped instrument panel pad and new material stitch lines, the centre console cluster gets the carbon treatment, and there are matte black-finish switches and smoked chrome-plated accent rings for the console and air-conditioner vents.

nissan gt-r 3

Meanwhile, the GT-R badge on the steering wheel gets a new velour-like gloss coating and the magnesium paddle shifters now have a finish that highlights the base material. Improved seats are also to be had – revisions have been made to the shape and cushion stroke, while seat surface length has been increased to provide better support and a new seatback design offers improved fit. The Black edition features leather bucket seats using a Recaro design based on the structure of the Pure and Premium edition seats.

Six exterior colours are available, with two being new – Meteo Flake Black Pearl and Aurora Flare Blue Pearl. The GT-R will begin selling in Japan on November 17, and will make its way to other global markets after February next year.

Honda recalls around 127,000 City and Fit models in Brazil

honda city

The recall season continues, this time over in Brazil. Late last week, Honda issued a recall on close to 127,000 units of its City and Fit models made by Honda Automoveis do Brasil over potential problems with accelerator pedals that could lead to unwanted acceleration.

Specifically, the company said that dust particles might get inside the accelerator pedal’s sensor, causing the pedal to become stuck in some cases. Though there would be a noticeably higher than normal engine RPM, the driver would be able to maintain control of the vehicle and brake safely to a stop, the company added.

honda fit

A single accident has been reported related to the defect, though there were no injuries. The cars being recalled, 126,774 in total, were assembled in Brazil from May 2008 to October 2010 and were sold only in Brazil, so the recall doesn’t apply to cars in markets elsewhere.

Ford looking to sell most of its stake in Mazda?

Ford logo According to a report by Japanese business daily Nikkei late last week, Ford is looking to sell a majority of its remaining 11% stake in Mazda – reducing it to 3% or less – to Sumitomo group businesses and other companies with working ties with Mazda.

The daily added that the shares sale is expected to lead towards both automakers slowly parting ways in terms of cooperation. Ford, however, has said that the report is mere speculation, and that its ownership stake in Mazda remains unchanged.

In acquiring 25% of Mazda’s outstanding shares, Ford became Mazda’s top shareholder in 1979, and in 1996 gained management control when it raised its stake to 33.4%.

Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TSI – our first impressions

The Volkswagen Polo is a car that we have been looking forward to drive ever since Volkswagen Group Malaysia announced back in August that it will be priced below RM110K, which makes it a “possible dream” for many. The reigning 2010 European and World Car of the Year at the price of a Jazz? Tempting!

For that money, we’re offered the latest tech – a 1.2-litre TSI engine and a 7-speed DSG gearbox wrapped in the smart looks of the fifth-generation Polo. Adding to the appeal is that it’s a Volkswagen, which counts good quality, high tech and “premiumness” (in Malaysia) as brand attributes.

Ingress wins contracts for new Proton model in 2012

While the news on Proton’s new Proton Inspira model is still hot off the press, Proton is already busy preparing the final stages of its next generation Proton Persona, referred to so far by the Proton management as the “Persona R”. R in this case stands for Replacement.

We may be looking at the Persona R being launched somewhere in early to mid 2012 based on a filing by Proton parts supplier Ingress Corporation Berhad to Bursa Malaysia. Ingress reported that it received a Letter of Intents from Proton for the supply of two parts for a new project – Roof Drip Mouldings and Door Sash. Supply for both parts are for 5 years and are supposed to commence in Q4 of it’s financial year ending 31st January 2012, which means somewhere from November 2011 to January 2012.

There are a lot of exciting things coming up from Proton and their engineering resources must be quite stretched – the Persona R, the Campro Turbo engine (along with the Exora Turbo to debut next year), a revision to the normally aspirated Campro engines, matching their engines with new family of transmissions (Punch for CVT automatic and Getrag for manual), the Saga facelift, and preparing to put the Proton EMAS into production.

Budget 2011: BMW hopes clean diesel will not be forgotten

While the hot news was on hybrids and the only significant topic on the diesel front in Budget 2011 was on the implementation of the B5 programme (Blending of Biofuels with Petroleum Diesel) on a mandatory basis in some states by June of next year, there remains the hope that the Government will continue to look at improving the quality of petroleum diesel as another step in lowering carbon emissions.

BMW Group Malaysia is of the belief that such an approach is not only a viable alternative but a very sound one at that, with the following commentary on Budget 2011, which you will find after the jump. I think the key is here the comparison between the 320i and the 320d. Makes lots of sense really, when compared to what the United Nations defines the hybrid standard as.
