Volkswagen’s Amarok wins International Pick-up Award

volkswagen amarok 1

It might still only be available in selected markets, but Volkswagen’s Amarok is certainly going places, winning new friends and influencing people. It has, as its type suggests, picked up the inaugural International Pick-up Award 2011. The award was judged by a panel from 23 countries, the same that elects the International Van of the Year awards winners.

During the judging process, the Amarok was praised by the jury for its ‘effortless off-road abilities’, while its capacity on-road was judged to be the best against all other competitors.

The jury also thought the vehicle’s interior to be pretty impressive, noting with kudos the layout and generous space for both front and rear passengers in the double-cab cabin.

Summing up, the jury had plenty of positives for the vehicle. ‘The new Volkswagen Amarok distinguishes itself by fantastic driving qualities, both on- and off-road. It sets new standards in the pick-up category in respect to load capacity, payload, interior room, comfort, ergonomics and fuel consumption.’ High praise, indeed.

VW recently stated that the Amarok – which is currently only being assembled in Argentina, with production in Hannover for European markets being mulled – could help the group make its way into Thailand and allow the company to gain a foothold in South-East Asian markets, though that may yet be a little ways away. One can’t also discount the possibility that the pick-up may figure favourably in certain plans locally, though that’s just speculation.

Camry challenging Chrysler 200 mid-sized sedan unveiled

Chrysler has unveiled its new mid-sized challenger to rival the Camry, Accord and Chevy Malibu. Named 200, this younger brother to the 300 kills off the Sebring nameplate and will go on sale as a 2011 model. Fiat now owns Chrysler, but the Sterling Heights, Michigan built 200 isn’t a reskinned Italian car.

Described as a car that appeals to “customers that want style and substance, all at a surprising value”, the 200 is based on the third-gen Sebring, which made its debut in 2007, but with heavily revised styling that makes it appear much more handsome than before.

New bits include front and rear fascias and fenders, grille featuring the new Chrysler winged badge, hood, rear decklid and exterior mirrors, new projector headlamps and fog lamps, new LED taillamps and a LED centre high-mounted stop light. The rear end clearly apes the Jaguar XF.

The 200 will be powered by the 2.4-litre four-pot “World Engine” mated to either a four-speed or six-speed automatic gearbox. The V6 option is filled by the company’s 3.6-litre Pentastar engine mated to a six-speed auto.

Chrysler says that ride and handling has been improved thanks to stiffened body mounts and a softer ride rate, improved suspension geometry with a raised roll centre and a new rear sway bar. NVH has been “extensively upgraded” from the old car as well.

The cabin has been upgraded too, but there are no images to see where and how. Gallery after the jump.

Euro 5 Perodua Myvi Sport and SE launched in UK

Perodua has introduced two new variants to its UK Myvi line up: the Myvi SE and the Myvi Sport. The Malaysian car maker also announced that the Myvi range, which also includes the manual SXi and automatic EZi, is now Euro 5 compliant.

The Myvi Sport gets a body kit consisting of front, side and rear skirts including “imitation quad exhausts” (yes, that’s the exact phrase used in the press release). Colour coded side mouldings with chrome ‘Myvi’ motifs, chrome door handles and different alloys are the other changes. No rear spoiler, though. Inside, mock carbon fibre inserts are fitted to the instrument panel and door panel switch. Only available with a manual gearbox, the Sport is priced at £7,799 (price includes £1,000 swappage allowance offer).

The Myvi SE is the “luxury model” fitted with dark grey leather. The centre panels of the seats are made from perforated leather, with matching door inserts. Available in manual or auto form, the Myvi SE is priced from £8,399 including the £1,000 trade in deal, which lasts till 31st October. The Myvi is a fair bit cheaper than mainstream superminis in the UK – B-segment car for A-segment money, although the brand counts against it.

The UK spec Myvi is also powered by the K3-VE 1.3-litre engine with 86 hp and 116 Nm of torque. There’s no mention of different figures for the Euro 5 versions. I didn’t know that Perodua is still exporting pre-facelift Myvis until now.

Peugeot introduces THP 200 engine in 308 CC

308 cc

Peugeot has introduced a range topping variant to its 308 CC range, with the 1.6 litre THP 200 engine joining the fold. The 200 hp engine, already seen in the RCZ and 308 GTi, isn’t the only thing that’s new to the 308 CC THP 200, of course.

New to the car is a front suspension incorporating joints with larger diameter bearings derived from the company’s larger C/D-segment platform 3, as seen on the 308 GTi, as well as 18-inch Lincancabur alloy wheels clad with 225/40 R18 tyres as standard.

Bagging the THP 200 also gets you the attendant Sound System technology, where different engine harmonics are delivered according to vehicle acceleration, through the use of a vibrating membrane with an inbuilt time delay.

On sale from this month in France, the car will feature a unique Féline trim level, as befits its range-topping status, though an optional special Black/Vintage two-tone leather trim is also available.

Actually, this sort of jogs the memory a bit – the 308 CC is supposed to be one of the five models launched this year by Nasim locally. Now, when’s it arriving then?

Korean International Circuit finally given the green light

yeongam track 1

It looked to have been touch and go for the Korean International Circuit and the Korean Grand Prix, with final track inspection to grant permission for the race to be held having been delayed multiple times, but now everything is set to go for Korea’s first F1 race.

The 5.62 km track in Yeongam, South Jeolla, about 400 km south of Seoul, has passed the necessary inspection and obtained the license from the International Automobile Federation (FIA), event operator Korea Auto Valley Operation said today.

The Formula One Korean Grand Prix takes place on Oct 22-24, and the track in Yeongam, designed by Herman Tilke, was completed just last week.

Cutting it fine would be an understatement, but all’s well that ends well, in this case. Now all that remains to be seen is if the racing’s any good.

Suzuki Alto to be rebadged as a Volkswagen in India?

Yes, that’s true, according to Autocar India, who revealed that Wolfsburg has identified two models from the Maruti Suzuki range that it wants to rebadge as their own. The magazine’s sources said that Maruti, Volkswagen and Skoda India officials looked at the possibility of putting a VW badge on the A-star (Suzuki Alto to us) and a Skoda emblem on the high roofed WagonR in a meeting.

If you don’t already see the connection, let us connect the dots. Last December, Volkswagen bought 19.9% of Suzuki for US$2.5 billion to start “a comprehensive partnership” with the small car expert. It is without doubt that Suzuki’s huge presence in India – where there’s plenty of scope for growth and Maruti Suzuki holds close to 50% market share – made it an attractive proposition to VW, which has dreams of surpassing Toyota as the world’s top carmaker.

When they announced the deal, VW and Suzuki said they were “focused on achieving synergies in the areas of rapidly growing emerging markets as well as in the development and manufacturing of innovative and environmentally friendly compact cars.”

Autocar India further said that high level cooperation between VW and Suzuki has already begun and an organisation structure has been put in place for regular interactions between teams from Wolfsburg and Hamamatsu to work together. The Germans want the rebadging exercise to start ASAP, targeting for the “new” A-star and WagonR to be in showrooms as early as 2012.

There won’t be a unique dashboard or sheetmetal, just new lights, bumpers and grilles, which means that the Euro badged cars will still look very much like the Suzuki originals. Would the differentiation come under the hood then? Maruti doesn’t have its own diesel engines and currently purchases them from Fiat, but it’s argued that it will be cheaper to continue doing so, even after factoring in license fees, as the Multi-jet is highly localised.

MotoGP made a quick stop at the Sepang International Circuit over the weekend and at the end of the grueling race, the Fiat Yamaha Team emerged victorious as Valentino Rossi took victory of the race and teammate Jorge Lorenzo secured the championship, with 313 points.

His closest championship rival Dani Pedrosa did not compete in the race after breaking his collarbone during the Japanese GP practice. While we wait for more action from the next round this coming weekend, you can enjoy some high-res images of the Malaysian GP after the jump.

Malaysians bag knockout prize in F1 in Schools World Finals

raluca f1

Fast their car was, indeed, well, fast enough for a team of Malaysian students from Sekolah Dato’ Abdul Razak to take the gong in the knockout racing challenge in last month’s F1 in Schools World Finals in Singapore, which was held ahead of the Singapore GP.

The group of 17 year old students, Haziq Asyraf Marzuki, Mohamed Hussein Haro, Danel Iman Che Khalib and Wan Faiq Amsyar Wan, participating as a team called Raluca F1, emerged as winners in the knockout racing element in the finals.

In the final, racing against Zer0.9, a collaboration team of Australian and UAE students, Raluca F1 blitzed the Australian/UAE team with a winning time of 1.251 secs to take the honours. Victory for the Malaysians got them a special prize, with F1 in Schools presenting the team with a simulator race seat as a reward for their efforts.

A total of 25 teams from around the world took part in the finals, with 17 awards in different areas up for grabs. An American team, Unitus Racing, was crowned champions when it won the overall F1 in Schools World Finals.

The education programme is aimed at raising awareness of Formula One among students and school children globally through the means of multi-disciplinary challenges associated with the sport. Open to students aged from 9 to 19, its main objective is to help change perceptions of engineering, science and technology by creating a fun and exciting learning environment for young people to develop an informed view about careers in engineering, mathematics, science, Formula One, science, marketing and technology.

The competition inspires students to use IT to learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacturing, branding, graphics, sponsorship, marketing, leadership, teamwork, media skills and financial strategy, and apply them in a practical, imaginative and exciting way. Obviously, it worked very well for the Raluca F1 boys.

Nissan teases new Tiida/Versa – new Latio for us?

tiida sketch

Nissan has released a sketch of its new global sedan, likely to be the new Tiida/Versa. No other details as yet, but the car is set to be unveiled at the 8th China (Guangzhou) International Automobile Exhibition in December.

Currently, the Tiida is available in both four-door hatch and sedan form in Japan, the latter being called the Tiida Latio, and locally as the Latio in both guises.

The interesting question is of course when the new B-platform vehicle will make its way here to replace the current one.
